Who could forget Mr. Schwump, with that keen toupee?
Ken Berry was a bachelor, I believe. I imagine Regis,
as well (the guy holding the repeal the gold standard
sign, when the armored truck came through). The 2
young doctors that came to town (George Nader &
William Christopher). I wonder about Gilley Walker
(Larry Hovis, now a visiting professor of theater arts
at Southwest Texas State University). Also, my
namesake, Charlie Varney, as well as Mr. Johnson, who
threw booze parties at his house, where Otis bought a
horse/cow. Luke, the drifter, etc....

Last nights episode of Lucy, she returned to her alma
mater Mayfield College. Lucy pulled a prank and hid
the statue of Mr. Mayfield. The statue of founder
Mayfield was same the Col.Taylor statue that Aunt Bea
unveiled.

Yesterday I was at my locksmith. He had a picture of
his 'crack security system'. Guess who...? You got it,
our own Barney Fife (Phife, Phyfe). He was fumbling to
get his gun out of his holster. The locksmith didn't
know why I was laughing.

P.S.

I look forward to reading about Mr. Griffith's
renaming of U.S.-52. I unfortunately couldn't go
because my wife of 22 years and I are seperating. Plus
my son was caught for possesion. And just when I
could've used a shot of MAYBERRY!

Where's the crack security team when you need it?

I had hoped to be in Mt. Airy right now at the Highway 52 dedication, but an
illness has kept me home. What a disappointment! I'll just have to settle for
the next best thing -- watching TAGS videos while I recuperate and hearing
about the event from those who went.

All the talk about Mayberry music reminded me of the songbook I picked up
several years ago. It's called "The Golden Book of Favorite Songs" and was
published in 1946. Some of the songs it has in it are --
* Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms
* The Vacant Chair (or We Shall Meet, but We Shall Miss Him) -- the song Andy
and Barney sing to Otis to make him think he's died, after buying his car)
* Juanita -- one of Barney's faves, of course
* Santa Lucia -- the solo that ended up being a trio that Andy, Barney and
Gomer sing at the choir concert
* In the Gloaming -- sung by the Mayberry Barbershop Quartet
* The Little Brown Church in the Vale -- the song that turns Malcolm Tucker,
our man in a hurry, around.

It's neat to be able to play through these tunes and relive Mayberry moments.
You never know where Mayberry music will turn up!

Meredith Baxter's real life mom, Whitney Blake, played attorney Lee Drake in
the episode "Andy's Trip to Raleigh". Classic TV fans will also remember her
as Dorothy Blake, one of TV's first working moms, on "Hazel". She also was
the co-creator of "One Day at a Time". Sadly, Miss Blake passed away on
September 28th.

Odd facts known by few: She was 42 years old (and Meredith already 20!) when
she played the woman that made Helen so jealous.

I always have to laugh when I watch that episode that Helen and the other
characters are so taken aback by the existence of a FEMALE attorney. "Why
there must be 3 or 4 in the whole state of North Carolina!"

Here's a nice article entitled 'Almost Mayberry' that appeared in 'The
Baltimore Sun' on October 8, 2002. Go to www.sunspot.net/today.Scroll down to

Don't confuse 'The Baltimore Sun' with Opie's newspaper, 'The Mayberry Sun.'

I will going to Myrtle Beach next week for a few days and to see Don Knotts
and Tim Conway at the Alabama Theatre. If anyone has seen this show, can
you email me and let me know how the show was. I am sure that it is going
to be exciting. Also, did they have an autograph session?

Thanks,

I bought a CD called "Will the Circle Be Unbroken, volume III". Great CD.
There is a song on the second CD called "There is a Time", sung by Rodney
Dillard.
Yes folks there is a 'Darling' on this CD.
Also, in the notes John McEuen thanks The Dillards for inspiring him to
become a performing musician.
It's great to have a TAGS moment during the day.

It was just great to be there. I wasn't up too close but had good view.
Once the umbrellas were put away. It was rain then cleared off so the
moved to the open platform. Then rain again so back under tent. Took some
time. I wanted more Andy less politicians but Andy did say a good bit.
Nothing
most of us dedicated fans hadn't heard, but his expressions and mannerisms.
show he is a great storyteller. One of highway board(not sure of exact
title now)
called Gov. Easley Gov. Hunt by mistake and got the first big laugh.
Andy got a
lot more of course. Even with the rain it was great day for me. I'm sure
more
detailed reports will follow, so hold on for more to come.

Hi Everyone,
I just got back from Mount Airy for the dedication of the Andy Griffith
Parkway. I CAN'T BELIEVE I FINALLY SAW ANDY!! I know some of you went and
were just as thrilled as I was. Wasn't he wonderful. I loved his stories about
himself growing up & getting into trouble in Mount Airy. Especially when he
said he came in with tar all over him and his Mom cried while she spanked him
and that his Dad paid $800 for that house on Haymore St. It was great. I'm
still on cloud 9!!!! I will always treasure my Program & my T-Shirt.

I was able to listen to the song "Mayberry" by rascal flatts the other day.
The song talked about todays fast paced world and how he misses Mayberry,
sittin' on the front porch where everything is black and white. I think this
group is from the south but I know they are one of the hotter groups in
country music right now.
As for who in Mayberry is a bachelor, it would be easier to name off
who is actually married.

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew if the song the Dillards sang at Mayberry in the
Midwest this summer was available yet. It was about life being like the Andy
Griffith Show ??? I sat there in the audience that night and cried when I
heard it, it was so beautiful. I didn't even need a bucket on my head to make
me just think... and think about how great it would be to live in Mayberry.

......no more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches....when that iron door clangs
shut...

Last night while checking TVLand to see what was on, I happened to see a
short segment of "Hillbillies" and there was this long, chauffer-driven
limousine pulling up to a Girl's school. First out was the mother, who was
none other than "Mizzez Wi-lee." Very short segment, but there she was!!
I enjoyed watching the segment on the highway being renamed for Andy, and the
station was nice enough to replay his speech of acceptance for those of us
who didn't get to see it live.
Andy did state he had spent the night in his boyhood home on Haymore street,
and gave some good anecdotes of things which had happened along his way to
stardom. He also promised the people of Mt. Airy he "would not be a
stranger", so maybe.....just maybe......he will show up for Mayberry Days
sometime!! Wouldn't that be a gas!!!

>>>They've already gone through the b&w episodes this time, and have started
the colorized. Didn't they just get done with the last run of colorized in
the middle of August? What a quick run for 159 episodes. Guess it's time to
do more chores around the house.
Charlie Varney (Just for plain guzzlin')<<<<

Charlie Charlie Charlie, you're just speeding around in that new car from
Otis, not takin time to appreciate the color episodes. (and by the way its
color, not colorized. Something has to be converted from B &W to be
colorized. These were filmed in color).

I'll admit there are not as many classics as there are in the B&W with
Barney there, but to dismiss them as a group, in my opinion is a mistake.
There were some episodes and things I didn't used to like until I started
reading about the show, and sharing notes on this wonderful vehicle. For
instance, I wasn't a big Darling fan, until I began to watch them closely
and appreciate them. Now, I realize what gems those episode are. How can
chores around the house be more fun than any Andy episode? Why, you must be
hittin that cookin cheri with Malcom Meriweather. I'm just kiddin ya,
friend. I am just spoiled I guess. Between my local station and TVland, I
get a good mixture, but I rarely pass up Andy and the gang. But this is
Mayberry, and how you vote brother is your business. You are a valued
citizen! I'm votin for Andy--- B&W or color.

I saw Mrs. Wiley last night in a Beverly Hillbillies episode. She played a
socialite, like she did in TAGS.. "How do you do Mrs. Wiiii--leeeY" but
dressed like the Hillbillies to fit in with them. She was very funny.

Nice article on the Reality Show proposal. Those stars that didn't like the
idea, seemed to think that you would be trying to duplicate the original
TAGS. I think your idea was more to experience it in as much of a
Mayberry-like environment as possible. Harvey's right though, without the
elements that sell TV today, (sex violence, language) it probably would last
long.

Congrats to Andy on the new road! Hope y'all enjoy seeing' him. Don't
forget to bring the Pies and the Mayberry Band!

I'm dead sober but I expect I'll get over it.
