I'm guessing the writers had a copy of this same book...anyone know?

Re Message 5 - Mayberry Music
Hi Doug - Glad you came upon "The Golden Book of Songs." YES, it has a
number of songs used on "The Andy Griffith Show," and for good reason!
"The Golden Book of Songs" was originally published in 1915 and "revised
and enlarged" in 1923. It was the official songbook used at Rockford
Grammar School in Mount Airy when Andy Griffith and I were going there. I
especially remember how often we sang "Nita -Juanita." I still have my very
tattered copy of that great song book. (I was on a bus once in Italy and
the locals started singing "Santa Lucia," and I felt I was back home at
Rockford Grammar School. I don't think I realized until then that it was a
Real Italian song!)
Another interesting connection to Rockford Grammar School and our music
teacher, Mrs. Coleman, is in the "Barney and the Choir" episode. The song
that Barney and the choir are singing is "Welcome, Sweet Springtime." Mrs.
Coleman made all the students at Rockford sing that same song each year for
the "Spring Festival." It is indelibly etched in my brain, and, I am sure
likewise in Andy's.
If any of the TAGS fans are interested in "background" information like
this on how Andy's real hometown contributed to the atmosphere on "The Andy
Griffith Show," they'll find I sprinkled a good deal of such "inside"
information into my book. It's available at Weavers.

Last night I was watching my TAGS tapes and in the episode where Opie gets
A's on his report card. Opie is at the kitchen table doing his math, and then
Barney comes in and is talking to Opie. I noticed something I had not seen
before. When Barney gets his coffee mug with the B on it then pours himself
some coffee you can actually see steam rising from the cup. I guess they
really were having their morning coffee!

Subject: Color episodes
I once thought that I could NEVER enjoy the color episodes as much as I do the
B&Ws. However, after watching them out of sheer desperation, I have found that
I enjoy the development of the characters of Howard Sprague, Emmett and Goober.
There will never be another Barney and the magic he and Andy created together,
but there is some good interaction of the characters in the color episodes.
(One of my favorite color scenes is when Howard and Andy are tied up in the
cabin and Howard asks for a cup of water, tries to throw it out the window to
wake up Otis and gets Andy in the face instead. The look on Andy's face is
priceless.)
Happy National Potato Week to you all.
Carol

hello everyone , there has been several very good articles in the Charlotte
Observer ( Charlotte N.C.) this week about the highway dedication in Mt. Airy
. In the Sunday edition they had a special full page pullout on TAGS ,but made
a bad blunder in refering to Ellie as a pharmacy sales clerk rather than a
Pharmacist or lady druggist . Wednesdays edition covered the dedication and
some of Andys memories of growing up in his home town , the writer said Andy
was very entertaining and told seveeral funny stories of his youth and acting
career
.

I wish I could've been there in person to see Andy get his highway dedication,
but to my delight they had a story about it on our local news this morning.
I'm happy for our members who did get to go to the dedication and hope that
everyone had a good time.
I also saw a bumper sticker today with FIFE on it and a little picture of
Barney on the side of it. It also said something else, but the rest of the
writing was small and I didn't particularly want to attempt to read it while
traveling at 65 mph. Barney wouldn't think that was smart at all. Matter of
fact, he would probably think going 65 was way yonder too fast!! I should just
simmer down and do a nice, cool 35 or
40! :) Lisa

Mickey McLean figured it out!! WBMUTBB was indeed the inspiration for my column
on the Mayberry reality show. :) Guess I should thank you all very kindly for
the assistance!!
Today's story on the event itself is at:
http://www.news-record.com/news/local/andy17.htm
There is a photo gallery with some nice shots by photographer Jerry Wolford (no
relation).
On a personal note, it was a huge thrill to watch Andy tell all those stories
Wednesday. He was in a great mood, looked wonderful and had us rolling at
times, and wanting to thank his mentors and friends in other moments. I hope he
does come back soon!
Thanks and happy motoring! ... Amy Wolfford/Greensboro NC

Hello all Mayberryians!!
Hope all are fairing well, this wonderful day!!
And Hello to you too Mike Mcnair, just thought I would let you know we
already have that piece. But thanks for your offer, it's muchly appreciated!
Meanwhile, is there anyone out that know what the last 3 remaining pieces
are in the Hawthorne Mayberry Collection?
We already have Wally's Service Station, The Post Office, The Hotel, The
Barber Shop, Andy's House, and the Courthouse. Can anyone else tell the
Remaining pieces?
Thanks to all of you out there who have been so nice as to offer what
extra pieces you have to sell. THANKS!

Subject: Andy Griffith Parkway Dedication
Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2002 22:53:47 -0400
I drove up to Mount Airy on Tuesday for what turn into one of the most
memorable events for everyone who attended the Andy Griffith Parkway
Dedication. The committee did a great job of planning and preparing and
everything went perfectly. The only problem was the rain, but as Calvin
Coolidge says, "Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does
anything about it."
Tuesday evening the Visitors Center had an Open House that was, as always,
first class. Drawing names for the doorprizes was temporarily suspended when
Emmett Forrest arrived with the newest addition to his collection - Andy
had given him the SHERIFF and JUSTICE OF THE PEACE signs that hung on the
Courthouse doors, along with metal signs for The Andy Griffith Show and
Mayberry RFD that were used during production. Considering how rare TAGS
props from the show are, it was a thrill to see the real thing. In the
museum, there is a 1999 photo of the signs hanging in Andy's home and I am
very happy for Emmett that he will now be able to display them in the
Museum.
Wednesday morning there was a good group of WBMUTBB friends (all filled up
with breakfast at Snappy Lunch) to visit with while we patiently waited in
the rain for the ceremony to start. We had a fun time coming up with
water/rain/weather related quotes and were in the perfect spot to watch Andy
and Cindi arrive and go into the Municipal Building with the Governor before
things got going. The rains slowed enough to start the ceremony and during
the time Andy spoke, the sun had broke and it turned into a beautiful day.
The politicians had their say and then Andy shared some wonderful stories
that covered something for everyone - his family, Mount Airy, TAGS,
influential people in his life, the Surry Arts Council, and wonderful
stories from his childhood. His words were truly from the heart and he made
laugh as well as tear up. I've read so much positive press about the event,
but I cannot come up with words to capture how it felt to be there to
experience it. Being with my friends and Mayberry family made it that much
more special.
This whole event took place and was such a success primarily because of
certain members of WBMUTBB, all who prefer to have their actions speak for
them rather than be in the spotlight. I respect that and will not give
names, but want to personally thank them for everything that they did to
make Andy Griffith's return to his hometown so memorable for him and all of
us who attended. The list of special people from Mount Airy doesn't end with
Andy Griffith - there are many of them who still live there today and keep
the Mayberry spirit alive.
Jeff
