Joe,

I'm not complaining about the quality, or actually
lack of quality of episodes 160-249 (color). Heaven
knows we've beat that dead horse enough here. It just
seems that TVLand is running the 1-159 batch way too
fast, skipping so many along the way. They used to
show them all in order, so I could calculate when I'd
get more yard work done (during 160-249), then return
to being a part time couch potato watching 1-159.
They've upset a delicate balance. (I hate when they do
that!) KTLA does show 1-159 on the weekends (out of
sequence), and I have most of them on video, but it
was always nice to come home, kick back, turn dish
network to TVLand and relax. But for awhile, guess my
yard will be looking better! Believe me, I've seen
160-249 many, many times in the past. I have nothing
agin' 'em, but choose now to skip 'em. I just want an
explanation of why they (TVLand) ran through this last
run so quickly, that's all. Maybe I'll call my
lawyer, Neil Bentley, over in Mt. Pilot. He'll get a
hold of TVLand brass, and get to the bottom of this.
(what a nice man!....nice suit, too)

"His words were truly from the heart and he made
laugh as well as tear up. I've read so much positive press about the event,
but I cannot come up with words to capture how it felt to be there to
experience it. Being with my friends and Mayberry family made it that much
more special.

This whole event took place and was such a success primarily because of
certain members of WBMUTBB, all who prefer to have their actions speak for
them rather than be in the spotlight. I respect that and will not give
names, but want to personally thank them for everything that they did to
make Andy Griffith's return to his hometown so memorable for him and all of
us who attended. The list of special people from Mount Airy doesn't end with
Andy Griffith - there are many of them who still live there today and keep
the Mayberry spirit alive.

 Jeff"

Beautifully said, Jeff! Despite the wet beginning, it was a truly special
event thanks to all involved. It will be quite awhile before the excitement
dies down in these two thrilled visitors. Mount Airy & Mayberry folks are
the best!!

Thanks for the link and the photo gallery fantastic
I did grab a 2 local Mount Airy papers on the dedication
day. One to read and one as a keepsake.
Since then I scoured the Web for as many articles as I
could find. Most just used a standard AP photo. I could see
the podium fine. The photo gallery let me in at another
point of view. Thanks

I recently saw the episode in which Aunt Bee wins all the prizes on the "Win or
Loose" game show while in Hollywood. When she realizes that the taxes will
prevent her from keeping most of the prizes I assume that she "called the man"
in Mt. Pilot and sold him the refrigerator.

Attention all mid-Atlantic and northeast fans of TAGS. On October 25-27,
Jamie Farr, Joe Turkel, and a host of other celebrities will be appearing at
'Chiller Theatre' in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Visit
www.chillertheatre.com for all the details.
As far as TAGS fans are concerned, Jamie Farr portrayed Sylvio in 'The
Gypsies.' He also was a cast regular in some other show with an acronym in
the 1970s. Joe Turkel starred as 'Fred' ,one of the bank robbers, in 'Otis
the Deputy.' Joe Turkel's 'Fred' character tells Howard Sprague to "Shut up!"
when receiving some of Dr. Sharlock's advice. Fred's head was also on the
receiving end of Otis' bottle of booze when the thugs were apprehended.
I attended this event earlier this year. Joe Turkel was very nice and
gracious. He stood up behind his table, ( much like Fred did looking out the
window in the old Carson shack), when the other celebrities were sitting
down.
On a minor note, Ruth Buzzi autographed an 8x10 of 'The Lost Saucer' with Jim
Nabors signature already on it for me.

"Get him a drink of water!"

Hey to all of you lucky folks who were able to see our honored Andy Griffith
in person this week!

Was there enough media coverage of the event that someone might have a video
or audio tape of Andy's remarks and stories? I sure would be willing to pay
a reasonable price for such a thing .. especially if it was sold through
Weaver's!

Can any of you media-type folks check into this? Thanks!

We'll keep the porch light on until you let us know!

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Reference above:
The posting from today's bulletin-board is exactly the
REASON you'll NEVER see "complete season" DVDS (or VHS-
tapes for that matter) of The Andy Griffith Show. There
ARE those of us that WOULD buy the best quality, un-ed-
ited digitally restored TAGS episodes available. There,
once-apon-a-time, was a plan to release ten cassettes a
year until 60 tapes captured the entire 249 episodes in
their pristine best. Instead, there are less than 20. I
said from the beginning-- as did Jim Clark and others--
"There won't be further tapes if only an 'interest' is
all that is expressed over the TAGS tapes. SALES is all
ANY business cares about. Columbia House did an excel-
lent job making the transfers. At $5 an episode, times-
four [$20-a-tape], they are WORTH it. The only fault is
whoever did the cassette remarks, i.e.:
=> "Ellie Mae(?) Walker" is one tape's title. Huh?
=> One tape refers to "brothers" Goober and Gomer(?). It
has two episodes described and presents two other episodes
altogether of the four on ONE tape. The tape's title?
"GOOBER'S GOOFS". Goober's goofs?
 The tapes are E-X-C-E-L-L-E-N-T. I've GOT a DVD-player;
BetaMax;LASER-disc;and multi-system VHS. I don't CARE if
it's VHS or DVD... I live abroad, and rely on friends and
COLUMBIA HOUSE for my English-Language TV-shows. Eighty
of my 249-episodes are EXCELLENT-- the rest are LOVINGLY-
made by friends, but you'll not find any episodes better
than the Columbia House Collectors' Series.
Come on now! If I-- a fan club of one-- can afford the,
so far, 20 tapes, cannot an entire club of, say TEN,
"spring" for a set, themselves?
Buy the darn tapes! Don't just order one or two. Cannot
afford it? Quit smoking! Drink less Jack Danials... buy
a set before it's too late. You CAN buy every single epi-
sode of plenty of shows-- THE ONES people are INTERESTED
in B-U-Y-I-N-G!
Chewing cabbage (on this subject) for the last time-- I'm
frustrated keeping my TAGS shelves clean... and awaiting
new editions. Let's help each other in this matter!

to edit and convert that video to a web format and
make it available for viewing at the Mayberry Pickle

Hello to all = I would like to correct my earlier post of above..- I am asking
Original Columbia House tapes , NOT bootleg or home-made
copies. I understand now that some may think this is what I was asking for.
I am a member of Columbia House and the last several times I have tried to
order TAGS tapes they have either been out or told me they were no longer
available. I will continue to try to purchase them through the club as I
always have. Perhaps I will get lucky soon. I thought perhaps if someone had
extra copies they might want
to part with them. I think the mis-understanding may have been my choice of
the word "cheap". Perhaps a bad choice.

Please do not assume that my intentions were less than
honorable. I HAVE made efforts to
purchase copies through the club. I did not mean to
give the wrong impression.

In addition, I neither drink nor smoke, nor do I criticize what I do not
clearly
understand. Nor am I cheap!"She just so much as said I was cheap!"

Thank you all for allowing me to clear this up, and thanks to those who have
sent helpful emails responding to the request.
Next time you're by Foley's, have a piece of fruit and tell him to "put it on
my tab!"
regards
Michael Burch

Subject: TVLand Book--good observations about comedy
Date: Fri, 18 Oct 2002 17:17:04 -0400

I think I have mentioned this book before, (TVLAND to GO by Tom Hill) but I
thought I would share a few more excepts. One very interesting list is "the
29 most important comic formulae in SITCOMS.

As I scanned this list I thought it was fun to think of an example in TAGS
of each one. One of the first mentioned we heave discussed before
discussed before, the triple.
"The Triple" Basically the concept is the magic number is three because it
takes two examples to establish a pattern or expectation, and one more to
disturb the pattern with the comic event.
The best case of this I could recall was at the end of the Gold Truck
Episode. Gomer says twice.."A decoy, Shazam, A decoy, Shazam"...then
Barney says "A decoy?" and Andy deadpan's "Shazam". There are many more,
perhaps you will remember a favorite.

Another comedic technique that Hill mentions is "the Catchphrase" These are
generally very minor jokes that acquire resonance only through repetition.
An example of this would be Jimmy JJ Walker in Good Times saying
"Dy-no-mite" or Steve Urkel saying "Did I do that?" Can you think of a
catchphrase or two from TAGS?

OK, One more for now. "The Reverse" It its most basic execution, this is
when a character is in midstream when suddenly he must deal with new
information and change direction. One of these that comes to mind for me is
when Andy and Barney are trying to figure a way to get out of the planned
marriage of Andy and Charlene Darling. Barneys reads the part about the
Black Rider on a White Horse going from East to West. He says something
like "All we need now is some patsy"
The scene immediately cuts to them in the barn with the white horse and
Barney dressed in black. He is definitely "reversed" by becoming the patsy
he imagined.

OK, can you think or other examples of the Triple, The Catchphrase, or the
Reverse?

Shazam! I'd like to find a copy of that book. It was the primary singing book
used in the one-room country schoolhouse where I was a student (back in the
dark ages). Our teacher knew little or nothing about music, but two of us in
my class played piano and we taught the music. All students at Union School,
District 72, learned and sang the "Mayberry songs" from that Golden Book!
Andy, Miss Crump, and Gomer with the golden voice would have been proud of us!

inlaw visit)
