It's also mentioned in the second episode too, in fact I think they even make
a bigger deal out of it. As to why it was dropped, I saw speculation
somewhere that cousins hiring each other was seen as too negative of a
southern or rural stereotype by the writers, so they backed off.

Hi everyone,

I read a question in yesterdays about actors on TAGS that were born before
1900. That question led me to wonder how many actors who portrayed
characters on TAGS died during the series? I know that Floyd did, but how
about the original Ben Weaver?

Makes ya think!

Barney was also identified as a cousin in the episode where the escaped
convict steals the leaking rowboat.

I'm not sure that the writers had to refer to Barney as Cousin Barney
again after mentioning it twice in the early scripts or that it would
change anything.

Probably everyone in town was a "cousin" in one way or the other. We
have 2nd cousins three times removed in my family are referred to as
"cousins."

Hey Folks,

Just wanted to wish everyone here in our corner of Mayberry a happy holiday
season as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

Secondly I've got a favor to ask. I'm looking for someone with Time Warner
Cable in the Akron or Northeast Ohio areas to record some local stuff for
me off of TW's cable system in late November & early December. I'll be
happy to pay all postage & tape costs, etc. If you think you might could
help me out with this please e-mail me and I'll explain the whole thing.

Thanks,
Chad Palmer

.... A tenderized, batter- dipped, deep-fried pork tenderloin is

Yeah, Mary, but I bet that one don't compare to the one you can get at the
Snappy Lunch in Mt. Airy. I can tell you from experience, it is GOOOOOOOD.
Emmet

BUT this IS the description of the one from Snappy Lunch - according to the
website

http://table.mpr.org/whereweeat/stern_porkchop.html

So... now I'm curious - to all you lucky people who have actually been to
the Snappy Lunch - is it different than the description?

Mary from Canada - no pork chop sandwiches on any menus around here!

noticed that Wally's wasn't alway's Wally's! upn Indiana channel 23
Indianapolis is showing TAGS in order. It's funny how you pick up on
things now that we are subscibers! ;)

"Why is it that in the first episode of TAGS, Barney refers to Andy as
his cousin? Why did the writers change the
script?"------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I
don't know the "official" answer, if there is one. However, Andy and
Barney are referred to as cousins a few times in the first season, not
just in the first episode, and then it is never mentioned again. They
are said to be cousins in the Manhunt episode and also in the episode
about the runaway boy. Later it is said that they have been friends
since the fourth grade and they are referred to as friends. I guess that
it is possible that they were cousins AND friends. Maybe once the
first season established that they were cousins, there was no need to
mention it again. And it is possible that they were cousins who had
never met until the fourth grade or maybe they knew each other before the
fourth grade, but were not friends until then. And they might have been
distant cousins, not necessarily first cousins. Maybe they were such
distant cousins that they didn't even realize that they were cousins
until Barney applied ! for the job. That might explain why they
mentioned it several times and then never again. They were so excited to
find out they were related, they couldn't help but call each other
"cousin" until the newness wore off. Then they put that thought to the
back of their minds and went on referring to themselves as friends like
they had before. I'm sure the writers never gave the situation much
thought because they expected each episode to be viewed by the public
once or twice and they could not have foreseen all of the "trained
noticers" who would make a note of such discrepancies. Mary Grace
Gossage"You see, Andy, I want the folks in this town to realize that you
picked me to be your deputy because you looked over all the candidates
for the job and you judged their qualifications and their character and
their ability, and you came to the fair, the just, and the honest
conclusion that I was the best suited for the job. And I want to thank
you, cousin Andy."

I remember in one of the TV reunion shows this being discussed. I think it
was Sheldon Leonard (maybe it was someone else) who said that it was written
only as a punchline to the scene. He said that in the beginning Barney was
conceived as a secondary character who would appear every now and then but
would not have a big role on the show, so they didn't forsee that joke having
an impact down the line. Later, as Barney developed into a key character,
they just dropped that reference to him being Andy's cousin and never used it
again.
