I figured that Andy knows everybody (and every car) in town. Maybe nobody
in Mayberry
had a hitch unless they had a trailer. But you're right, it is kind of
strange. Actually, Andy
seems to guess right on lots of strange issues. Who would've guessed that
a cow theif
was putting shoes on a cow?

It's really not unusual since he already thought that the car belonged to the
crooks. He figured that if it had a trailer hitch, where's the trailer?
They were from out of town and they had to park the trailer somewhere, why
not the trailer park. And since they were crooks, it probably wasn't used
for any type of business either. Just good detective work!

Thanks for explaining. My take on this is both Barney and Gomer were
motivated by being embarrassed and saving face. Barney made a big deal to
Gomer and embarrassed him in front of the townspeople; had he just written
the ticket it probably wouldn't have escalated. When Gomer called Barney on
his duplicity, Barney couldn't admit he was wrong having just put on that
show for everyone, which is also why he behaved the way he did toward Andy. I
have been in similar situations in real life, with police (only an occasional
few) threatening to arrest me for pointing my TV camera in a specific
direction. Of course they couldn't really do that, and they hate being called
on it.

I remember seeing him in that one, he worked for the print shop. But I don't
remember specifically, are he and Opie in the same scene at one point? If
they were, you had a future meeting between two of Hollywood's most
successful directors.

Franklin that's a very interesting observation. Thanks for sharing it.
I agree with you to some extent on Gomer. The only other times I can think
of him being a bit confrontational is 1) when Barney misunderstands Andy's
intent, thinks he and Helen are getting married and they remodel the
bedroom. "What a dumb thing to do. Don't ever call me dumb, That was a
dumb thing to do" and 2) The rigged mint contest accusation.
But as to Barney, for argument sake, I would say it IS like Barney
because what ever position he takes...he really goes whole hog and gets
carried away. In this case Andy wants to keep the controversy low-key and
work it out back at the office..but Barney, being offended goes all the
way...as he had done in the past with any of his many costumes, or leaving
the Sheriff's office because he thinks he's being replaced by Bob Rogers, or
turning on Thelma Lou over seemingly little issues. Just another view on
the subject.
Since I'm talking about getting carried away, here's another question for
trained noticers. This one is a "killer".
In at least one episode a character feels genuinely threatened. In "Barney
gets his Man" the crooks words "I'll get you Deputy!" resonate with Barney
throughout the show. Many other times vague threats are made, or other
references to killing someone are made. How many references can you name
where "kill" or similar references are made in an exaggerated mode.

Subject: Pilot Episode
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 18:15:18 -0800
Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone out there could help me locate
a copy of the pilot episode of TAGS that was shown on
"The Danny Thomas Show" in 1960. I had a copy but loaned it to my brother who
accidently erased it. I have all the other episodes and would dearly love to
get another copy of this one.
The comedy writing on TAGS was truly remarkable to me.
One of the funniest lines that I've ever heard was during an exchange between
Andy and Gomer after Gomer was fired
from his job at the filling station. The exhange takes place
when Gomer stops by the courthouse after a day of job-hunting. Gomer's last
remark is an absolute classic.
Andy: No luck yet?
Gomer: No, but I'm going over to the market now. They're
advertising for an experienced butcher.
Andy: You know anything about cuttin meat, Gomer?
Gomer: You think they'll ask me that?

Just watched two early episodes of "Leave It to Beaver" from its first year of
1958 on TVLand, and saw two actors who would later be on TAGS. In Episode 2 of
LITB, Edgar Buchanan, who would later be Aunt Bee's beau Henry Wheeler on TAGS,
played Captain Jack the alligator man. And on Episode 3 of LITB, Will Wright,
who was the original Ben Weaver on TAGS, played Pete the fireman. Fun Stuff !

It's so strange that this has come up regarding TAGS checks. I always ordered
my Betty Boop checks from Checks in the Mail, and when I called Monday to
re-order my checks, I asked about TAGS checks, she told me that she would give
my request to the person that handles the styles that they have, so if anyone
wants to call and make a request here is the number:
1-800-733-4443. Maybe if they get enough request, we all can be writing
checks with our favorite gang on them. Good luck.

Subject: Andy & Opie Statue
Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 06:51:35 -0500
The article below is from the Raleigh News & Observer about TV Land planning
to put a statue of Andy & Opie in Raleigh. Two of my coworkers happened to be
at the Council meeting and said the presentation was very good.
http://www.news-observer.com/front/story/1925582p-1903653c.html
Jeff
RALEIGH -- New York has Ralph Kramden from "The Honeymooners." Minneapolis has
Mary Richards from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." And it looks as if Raleigh
will get Sheriff Andy Taylor and Opie from "The Andy Griffith Show."
The City Council unanimously endorsed an offer Tuesday by the TV Land cable
network to put a statue of the pair somewhere in central Raleigh as soon as
next fall. They will be depicted on their way to the fishin' hole, as they
appear in the opening credits of the 1960s sitcom. TV Land, which immortalized
Kramden in New York in 2000 and Richards in Minneapolis in May, will pay for
the statue and maintain it.
The council asked TV Land to work with the city's Arts Commission on the
details and return to the council with recommendations, including possible
sites. Pullen Park and Moore Square are potential spots.
TV Land ran the idea by Griffith, who starred in the show, and Ron Howard, the
Oscar-winning director who played Opie, and they support it, said Rob
Pellizzi, senior vice president of marketing and promotions for the New
York-based channel.
Howard "thought it was a wonderful idea," said Louisa Velis, Howard's
executive assistant, who added that Howard checked with Griffith to be sure he
was on board.
Council members didn't wonder out loud why the big city of Raleigh should get
the statue, but others might. Griffith grew up in Mount Airy, which was, some
say, the inspiration for Mayberry, the sheriff's fictional hometown.
Anybody who's a fan of the sitcom, however, knows Raleigh played a big role in
the show, though it wasn't always portrayed fondly. In one episode, the
spoiled son of a rich Raleigh newspaper editor vows Andy will lose his badge
for locking him up.
But Pellizzi said the show represented life in all of the Tar Heel State, and
that's why the statue should go in the Capital City.
"It's really about North Carolina," he said.
