I was baking for the holidays and, since I still had part of a bottle that
Barney didn't confiscate, I used some of Colonel Harvey's Indian Elixir in
my fruitcakes. They're extra tasty this year! Now don't tell Aunt
Bee..........you know, she had that brother.

Didn't they appear together in the episode where he doesn't want the band to
go to the state competition? Floyd was in the band and I think the mayor was
in the room at one point listening to them.

Good question. The SS Minnow on "Gilligan's Island" was said to be a snipe
at Mr. Minnow also (who, if I recall, was FCC commissioner).

Weren't Mayor Stoner and Floyd together in a scene with the episode where the
mayor wants to keep the band from going to Raleigh? Possibly when the mayor
made his speech to the boys when they were leaving? Or another time? After
all, Floyd was founder and you don't just take a founder and cast him
aside!!!!!

My understanding of "Goomer" as used by Granny is it is just as slang term
meaning "Whose this guy?" (Possibly somewhat derogatory - maybe akin to
"Whose this rascal?" or something similar) I use it all the time myself in
this fashion. However, it is possible there is another origin/use.

As for the name "Gomer," isn't it of biblical origin?

Just a thought...Parley Baer/Mayor Stoner, I believe
had the same last name as Max Baer/Jethro Bodine. Any
relation?

Max Baer, Sr. one time World Heavyweight Champion was
from Indianapolis my part of Mayberry Country.

Also, the look Otis gives Andy and Barney at the end
of the episode where Otis' brother comes to town and
is the town drunk back home, gets me every time.

If you've ever been on a farm, there are many places
in the dirt which can become wet and leave patches of
mud in an otherwise dry area. Feed water and the
livestock themselves can create mucho liquid. That
was a great episode, especially Barney staying with
Andy when the mayor and the state detective poo-poo'd
Andy's hypothesis. Happy T-Day. I'll be deep frying
my turkey and sipping a few home brews.

Actually, I have heard her refer to people as Goomers (I.E., Who's this
goomer?), but I don't recall her using Gomer. As for Gomer being a real name,
it is a Biblical name. The following is a concordance entry about Gomer if
you're interested:

The eldest son of Japheth, and father of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah (>
Genesis 10:2,3</A>) whose descendants formed the principal branch of the
population of South-eastern Europe. He is generally regarded as the ancestor
of the Celtae and the Cimmerii, who in early times settled to the north of
the Black Sea, and gave their name to the Crimea, the ancient Chersonesus
Taurica. Traces of their presence are found in the names Cimmerian Bosphorus,
Cimmerian Isthmus, etc. In the seventh century BC they were driven out of
their original seat by the Scythians, and overran western Asia Minor, whence
they were afterwards expelled. They subsequently reappear in the times of the
Romans as the Cimbri of the north and west of Europe, whence they crossed to
the British Isles, where their descendants are still found in the Gaels and
Cymry. Thus the whole Celtic race may be regarded as descended from Gomer.

I don't know about them ever appearing on camera together, I can't recall,
but they were in episodes together. For example, in the episode "The Mayberry
Band" Mayor Stoner decided to deny the band a trip to the band festival and
they got Freddie Fleet's band to stand in for them. Floyd didn't want to give
up his uniform, so Andy let him march, but told him not to play. That is just
one example.

Doggone me!)<<

What a great question Leon. This sent me to my books like Barney to the
Library in search of a solution to a problem. It turns out that the answer
is that there is one episode that Gunsmoke radio alumni (Parley Baer and
Howard McNear) starred in together. "The Mayberry Band!"
You will remember that Floyd is in the marching band (but asked not
to actually play) and Mayor Stoner had to Judge the band worthy of going to
the state capital. Right in the same season, among Mayor Stoner's
appearances, however, was "Floyd the Gay Deceiver" so they were active at
the same time.

Spotted another voice on the other end of the phone that we were discussing
a while back. When Opie is jealous of Peggy, Andy calls the courthouse
where Opie is (or vice versa) and you can here Andy's voice over the phone
Opie is holding.

>>Whatever happened to Hilda Mae, Barney's girl in 2 or 3 of the early
shows? Also, where did Thelma Lou work? I recall one episode where she asks
Barney "You mean you called me away from the office for that?" What office?
Marie<<<
----------------
Well Marie, Barney was often fast with the women...Fast to drop them or be
dropped, that is. After Ellie for Council (12) and Andy Saves Barney's
Morale(16), Hilda Mae just became a forgotten entry in Barney's little black
book. Juanita at the Diner was already turning up the heat, and just six
episodes later a little gal named Thelma Lou showed up (in Barney's Hip
Pocket).
Betty Lynn has said publicly that her job was never really defined. Being a
small town, I always speculated that she worked in an Insurance office, or
perhaps for a utility like the water or electric company.

OK here's my question to ponder over Thanksgiving Turkey (or leftovers
depending on when this Digest hits).

Who were all the attorneys that visited Mayberry? Bernard P Fife,
Attorney-at-Law does not count. (We're not fighting fire with fire) There
were two with the same last name.

In the name of Grovely Barch, Spirit of the Air, and Chief Noogatuck
remember the Indians, and have a nice Thanksgiving

>>>On many eps. of Beverly Hillbillies I have heard Granny refer to ppl..

reference to a "rube" that Granny is using. (She should talk.) is Gomer a
real name?

The proper name "Gomer" comes from the Old Testament. In Genesis 10, Gomer
was the eldest son of Japheth. Some scholars believe the Celtic race was
descended from Gomer (if you accept that the Biblical account of the Great
Flood is true, then it follows that every living person on Earth must be
descended from one of Noah's three sons -- Shem, Ham, or Japheth -- but I
digress). There was also a woman named Gomer in the book of Hosea (she was
Hosea's wife).

"Gomer" can also be a noun. One definition is "A conical chamber at the
breech of the bore in heavy ordnance, especially in mortars; -- named after
the inventor." There was also a Hebrew unit of measure called a Gomer,
equivalent to about 55 gallons (sometimes spelled chomer or homer). Can't
you just imagine Wally saying, "Hey Gomer, bring me that Gomer of oil." OK,
maybe not.

Further digression alert: In the novel "Flight of the Intruder," set during
the Vietnam war, "Gomer" was a nickname applied to the Vietnamese soldiers
(make your own conclusions here.)

Anyway, Granny was using the term to mean a hick or a rube.

You very well may be right. Sherwood Schwartz has admitted that he named
the boat on "Gilligan's Island" after Newton Minow as an inside joke, so
perhaps other TV writers also enjoyed taking the occasional cheap shot at
Mr. Minow.
