Howdy all!
How's about Jim Carey as Barney? I'm not his biggest fan,
but my guess is that he would get Barney down to a 'T', es-
pecially the facial expressions....

Mr. jerry Lewis said on letterman a few weeks ago that these current guys call
them self's comedians now days , the quality is not there like in TAGS, holly
wood has nothing original , when they have to pull up 60's shoes & remake them,
they put forth filth & immoral behavior, & called entertainment, call me Mr.
weaver on this, I can rewatch shows on TV land all day & I've not been to the
theater in years,
thanks for the indulgence

Re: That just gave me an idea...what about Johnny Depp as Barney Fife?
Look at him in "Ed Wood" and tell me what you think.
What a coincidence, I was thinking the exact same thing! Actually, I
wasn't thinking the same thing, but it is a coincidence because as we
got home today, I said I believe I'd like to watch my DVD of my
favorite Tim Burton movie today, "Ed Wood". After all, I haven't seen
it in awhile. Then I read my Bulletin Board and there it is!
On Depp, though, allow me to just say that even though he is my
favorite young actor working today, I really don't think anyone could
play the Mayberrians other than the originals. Mind you, I'm no
conservative - far from! I just think these actors are so cemented in
our minds as the characters (and rightly so - their were perfect!),
that we just wouldn't accept anybody else. And maybe that's a good
thing.

I'm a long-time lister who doesn't contribute very often these days, but who
enjoys reading the daily digests.
I've appreciated the dialogue about casting a new Mayberry movie -- it's a
"game" I played on the list several years back (and yep, there's no better
choice for Gomer Pyle than Adam Sandler).
I'd like to throw out an idea that I've had for years and had hoped to one day
help develop for television, but as I get deeper in writing for print (I'm a
writer of nonfiction books and a pop-culture magazine editor, with a background
in comics), it's unlikely I'll ever be involved in Hollywood, so here goes...
"Mayberry," the TV series. Not a recasting, but an all-new weekly series with
a cast of (mostly) new characters, focusing on small-town life in a rapidly
changing 21st century.
A surviving TAGS cast member (George Lindsey as Goober, maybe) could be a
nostalgic carryover, but the cast would feature all-new characters, a few of
which would be "next generation" (Opie's daughter could be the representative
Taylor, and just imagine Floyd's grandson!). Occasionally, Andy, Barney and
Thelma Lou , Opie, Gomer, etc. could make guest appearances.
This concept builds upon the legacy of "The Andy Griffith Show" without
"reimagining" it. It offers something new that respects something classic.
Ideally, this would be executive-produced by Ron Howard's Imagine company and
co-created by Andy Griffith (although if anyone on the list works in Hollywood
and wants to pitch this idea, please include me in the development!).
Put your buckets on your heads and "thank" about that for a spell. I look
forward to reading your comments.
Best regards,
Michael Eury

After reading all the info I could find last week about the 40 Acres
lot where the outside shots for TAGS were taken I've been looking at
the show in a different way. While watching "The Inspector" the other
day, I perked up when Andy, Barney and the Inspector went for a drive
to Luke's place where he was shooting up the place. At precisely 20
minutes and 49 seconds into this episode, immediately after the
Inspector says, "Mayberry to State Police" for the second time, I hear
what sounds to me like a car horn. There is no reason for a car horn
or a train sound, as my wife labels it, at this point in the show.
Is there any chance this is a sound "leak" from surrounding streets in
the area. I could not tell from the descriptions on the web sites I
read last week if there was much traffic outside the lot.
Any opinions? Am I just nuts? I tied listening for this on my TV Land
capture of this episode but did not hear it. I'll have to go back and
check again to be sure however.

Michael,
I think you have an absolutely exceptional idea there.
I would like to hope someone in the vast world of this subscription knows
somebody who knows somebody whose wife knows somebody who is a janitor at
MGM! :)
I would be happy to do anything I could to help pitch the idea.

One day some time back, my wife and I rode to a new barbecue restaurant for
some good old southern barbecue, and while eating she saw someone come in
wearing a Mayberry Days t shirt, along with a couple of little girls in tow.
She
called it to my attention, and then I asked her if she recognized him, and
after
a moment came to realize it was Phil "Ernest T" Lee! He came over and talked
to us a moment, had his girls speak to us as well, before getting his food.
He also came into Office Depot, where I worked for 3 1/2 years, and
occasionally would go into Ernest T for the employees!
So, when casting people for a new program, Phil Lee would be the only choice
for Ernest T!!
For Otis, why not cast Tim Conway? What a hoot that would be! Or maybe make
him the mayor of Mayberry and keep the cast with the Mayberry Days performers!
Would love to see that!
On second thought, make a program for Col. Tim's Talent Time based on one of
the shows, using all the members of the impersonators available! I would like
to see Barney and the Choir once again!
Great work, guys and gals, thank you for bringing so much joy to so many
people!

Chelcia, I'm with you ! And thanks for saying it.
The whole project reekes with disappointment. It has never worked before and it
never will. The reunion show has been done and now there are to few players
left to do anything else. In the 40 years since TAGS went off the air there
have been thousands of shows done and NOTHING compares to what this very
talented group of actors, writers and crew brought to us.
I would bet that if you took a poll of TAGS viewers by age you would find that
the ones who have been watching a while despise this idea.
Because of its shear popularity a project like this would grab a lot of press
and the attention of first time viewers who would end up being disappointed and
possibly never tune in to watch the real TAGS.
I say, let it be.
("This is it Miss Rosemary,") Don't mess it up !
