Congratulations to April on the arrival of little Taylor Angel Hayes. It is
always so wonderful to hear about the arrival of a new Mayberry resident.

This is one of my favorite episodes, because Barney is so clueless and
hilarious, and I love the increasingly pained, pleading, and
disbelieving looks Andy gives him. Who wouldn't want to hang out with
someone who can play "la Cucuracha" on the bongos? "sorry, Thelma Lou,
Andy and I want to be alone."

Incidentally, last weekend I went to the big city of Raleigh last
weekend, and saw a guy wearing a shirt emblazoned with the likeness --
several likenesses, actually -- of Don Knotts as our favorite deputy.
I says to myself, "this here's a very special person with fine taste
in deputy-themed apparel." :)

And what do you know if it didn't turn out to be fellow WBMUTBB-er Jeff
Koontz!?

hail, fellow, well met!

ok, take care,

J

My two cents on recently discussed Mayberry topics. These are only my
opinions so if you disagree, please don't hurt me.

     A. Miss Peggy was the numbero uno girlfriend Andy ever had. They had
many things in common. She loved music and had a good singing voice, she
could cook very well, she got along great with Opie and even loved to fish.
Also, (and I know a gentleman like Andy would not have considered this), her
daddy owned the R & M Grain Elevators in Raleigh and she was loaded!!!!!

     B. I'm sorry, the color episodes were good but TAGS lost a great deal
with the departure of Bernard Fife, M.D. I liked Howard and Emmett, but no
one could replace Don Knotts.

     3. Okay, this isn't and opinion, but Emma Brand was in the barbershop
replacing Ellen Brown as the manacurist. Also, Aunt Bee was in the barber
shop a couple of times, one of which she was selling raffle tickets for the
portable TV eventually won by Henry Bennett. Don't know if this counts but
there was also the lady who ended up being Barney in drag trying to place a
bet with the bookies in Floyd's shop. (They had the hair cutting
compellsion).

I went on a website for witch hazel and discovered it is sold at WalMart so I
got a bottle. It is wonderful with a distinctive aroma; guess that explains
the comment by one of the Morrison sisters that time. It is a mild astringent
that is mildly priced too.

See, I've been studyin' on this and a long while back it was discussed
here among all of us learned scholars that it was unusual for Clara to
go "wild with allspice" on a dill pickle. The consensus was stated as
that particular spice might go well with a nice sweet gherkin or a bread
and butter batch, but not a spice related to the dill variety.

The fact that you successfully used that in your apple pie backs that
up. Unless you went "wild with dill weed" in your apple pie.

Other than the ones already mentioned (Ellen Brown and the reporter who
overheard the story Andy told Floyd about the carp), the only other one I
remember being in there was Aunt Bee when she was selling raffle tickets in the
episode where Barney calls Henry Bennett a jinx. I do remember that Clarabelle
Morrison told her sister Jennifer that a lady never goes into a barber shop. I
guess the intent of that rule is to keep a lady from overhearing the men's
conversations in case they might be discussing things that it would not be
proper for a lady to hear.

I have a favorite line from TAGS too, but it was a line delivered off-camera
during the seventh season by Howard McNear. It was directed at his wife of
all people. By this time, in his physical state, he was having difficulty
memorizing his lines. The director had to yell "CUT!" a lot. His wife went
over
to him to explain that these people were trying hard to get through this scene
and it was important for him to deliver his lines effectively. He proceeded
to give her a mild expletive. All of the cast and crew broke out in laughter.
