get a copy of it?
Yes, it's a real song, entiled "Now is the Month of Maying" by Sir Thomas
Morley (1557-1602). This type of song is known as a madrigal, a form which
was enormously popular during the Renaissance Period (that's Renaissance,
R-e-n-a-i-s-s-a-n-c-e, Renaissance).
Your local music store should have it. It's one of the most famous
madrigals of all time, and it can be found in many books, such as the famous
"Penguin Book of English Madrigals" which I remember using in college.
--Paul
P.S. Technically, this madrigal falls into the subcategory of the balletto,
because it has a "fa la la...." refrain. The most famous balletto of all is
"Deck the Halls," which Andy and the gang sing in the Christmas episode.

You'll probably get alot of comments regarding this statement! There were so
very few minorities in Mayberry, I don't recall a single black, asian, or
hispanic student. Ernest T. might be the closest thing you'd get but he's
not a drop out, he's got his "Learning" diploma. Even the minorities in the
town had no children in school. Now, maybe when George Foley got his snow
shoes for Christmas, a brand new bike and wagon and heads off for Wyoming,
he'd be considered a drop out.

I think they might have taken that song out of circulation. After all, no one
could sing it like Barney!

Is it this one? I sang it in high school choir, but not with Miss
Poltice!
Thomas Morley: Now Is the Month of Maying
Now is the month of maying,
When merry lads are playing, fa la,
Each with his bonny lass
Upon the greeny grass. Fa la.
The Spring, clad all in gladness,
Doth laugh at Winter's sadness, fa la,
And to the bagpipe's sound
The nymphs tread out their ground. Fa la.
Fie then! why sit we musing,
Youth's sweet delight refusing? Fa la.
Say, dainty nymphs, and speak,
Shall we play at barley-break? Fa la.

I think I have the same song book that Chris does. I have picked up a
few of them in my "junking" over the past couple of years. The copy I
have was last printed in 1923. It was printed by Hall And McCreary
Company of Chicago. As mentioned by Chris, it contains many of the old
songs we hear on TAGS- also including "Believe Me, If All Those
Endearing Young Charms", "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton", "Santa Lucia", and
on the very next page, "In the Gloaming". I'm a collector of old
printings and I bet if you dig around in some old sheet music boxes or
in vintage book stores you'll happen upon one.

That's good thinkin', Tex. You'll need the snowshoes for the mountains, but
I've never seen a cowboy carrying a DVD set, or pulling a wagon full of
sandwiches, either. It just ain't Western.

When I think of toughest sheriff in America, I think of Buford Pusser. (Joe
Don Baker did the best portrayal of him in Walking Tall)
What made Sheriff Hege "the toughest sheriff in America"?

I am not sure if this has been addressed in the past or not. If it has, just
forget I even brought it up and move on to another topic. In one of my
favorite episodes "The Pickle Story" I notice that when Andy, Opie, and Barney
switch the pickles, they put Aunt Bee's "kerosene cucumbers" back into the
store bought jars with labels on them. However, when Barney hands the man from
Oregon his jar of Aunt Bee's pickles, they are in Aunt Bee's jars without the
labels. I wonder how Barney managed to make another switch. Actually, it
would have been very smart for Barney to have done another switch. Can you
imagine the reaction when those eight people who received Aunt Bee's pickles
opened their jars and tasted them? I am sure they would have complained to the
company whose name was on the label and there would have been a major
investigation. Then where would Barney and Andy be? Why they would be in a
"real pickle".
