There was one episode that featured a black student in Mayberry. But you
would have to go to Mayberry RFD.
It is the episode where Goober, of all people, was hired to be the driver
education instructor at the high school. Now I hate to be critical, but
that doesn't really say much for the educational standards of Mayberry Union
High. Well anyway, Sam's friend and neighboring farmer is a black man and
his daughter was taught how to drive by Goober and was shown in the
classroom part of the class.

I lived in the triad during Gerald Hege's heyday. A lot of us supported the
way he ran things, but it goes to show you anyone can turn bad. I remember a
slogan he had, "I ain't Barney Fife and this ain't Mayberry". (Or something to
that effect) Some of you may have heard about his souped up Impala Spider Car
and pink jail cells. Well, here's a link that will let you view the archives.
I hope it works.

That Month of Maying sure is some song! I don't know that
I've seen any bonny lass or dainty nymph around these parts.
Fa la la la la.

I was watching an old Sherlock Holmes movie with Basil Rathbone & Nigel
Bruce called "A Woman in Green" (which, by the way, was in black and
white so I'm not sure where they got the green). Anyway, Sherlock
Holmes was playing a song on his violin which was TAGS good old 14-A.

The motorists who got the non-labeled awful pickles might have done one of
three things: 1.) Chucked the jar out the window once they got around the
next bend. 2.) Left them at the next roadside stop for someone else to take.
3.) Gave them to a relative like you would give a Christmas fruitcake.
--Being a store-bought pickle guy, I would have been leery of a deputy,
acting all squirrely, trying to fob off some pickles on me. Nothing wrong
with homemade pickles, after all, Clara's were blue-ribbon winners.
BUT...free pickles being given out on a dusty county road by an
over-friendly deputy? I sort of like to know the history of the pickles I
eat!
I would like to think that somewhere out there, there's at least eight jars,
maybe more, of Aunt Bee's pickles waiting ever so patiently to be opened.

(p.s. I had homemade pickles at the county fair a couple of times. They were
great!)

I'm sure that as conscientious as Barney is, he would never misrepresent a
pickle to the general public.

Heck - he won't even buy a stamp out of one of those slot machines!

We have a lot of dinosaurs in Montana and a world renown paleontologist who is
establishing a new research museum for study. It is to be named the Beatrice
Taylor Paleontology Research Site. Check out this article:

CHOTEAU - The Museum of the Rockies has agreed to buy a north-central Montana
site rich in dinosaur history from the Nature Conservancy, the organization
said Wednesday.

The museum plans to pay about $200 an acre, or $110,000 total, for Egg
Mountain, west of Choteau, said Tana Kappel, conservancy spokeswoman. Kappel
said the land was appraised at about $400 an acre. The group will keep a
conservation easement on the 553 acres.

The area has been called the "most significant dinosaur research site in the
world" by Jack Horner, the museum's curator of paleontology.

The property will be renamed the Beatrice R. Taylor Paleontology Research Site
in honor of a Bozeman resident whose family donated money for the transaction.
Taylor is chairwoman of the museum's National Advisory Board and a former
board president.

The Nature Conservancy bought Egg Mountain in 1985 from the James and Marian
Peebles family as part of a larger purchase. The conservancy had leased the
land to the family for grazing while the museum operated a field camp there.
The museum said the lease agreement will continue.

TAGS fans,

Having watched seasons 1 & 2 on my crisp and clear DVD
pictures, I noticed that the view out the front door
of the jail changed. When the city fathers opened up
that window to the right (from the inside) of the
front door, they apparently rebuilt the entire block
across the street as well!

Hey folks,

I just added something new to the Mayberry Emporium web site. In the early
60's a TAGS coloring book was made. Long out of print and kind of hard to find.

I have scanned and enhanced some of the pages and they are there so you can
download and color them at your leisure.

There is also a coloring contest. Instructions are on the site. Just go to
the "Home Page" and hit the link to the coloring book.

Thanks,

Gary

Actually I just checked Hegecountry.com
Andy's car ain't there

this site shows he got no jail time.

I checked out some of the leftie sites like indymedia etc, who hated Hege.
They would have got Andy in his day too on trumped up charges, if Andy was a
real sheriff, and they were around.

That leaves Sheriff Arpaio who is still in office, in his last term.
