A couple of months ago, Bob Denver signed a trading card for me featuring
him as Dud from The Andy Griffith Show Collector Set Series One through the
mail. He also signed a page from 'The Andy Griffith Show Book' by Ken Beck and
Jim Clark. This came on the heels of his signing of an 8 x 10 of Gilligan and
Vito Scotti for my son Jesse. Jesse was ecstatic! He watches "Gilligan" 24-7,
well, a lot. Jesse wrote Bob a letter telling him that too.
To appreciate the full Andy/Gilligan connection, here's the scoop. Alan
Hale, Jr. appeared in the TAGS episode 'The Farmer Takes a Wife.' He calls
Barney "little buddy" before Gilligan. Bob Denver appeared in the TAGS episode
'Divorce, Mountain Style' in the time frame real close to signing on to do
"Gilligan." Natalie Schafer appeared in the 'Mayberry R.F.D.' episode "Goober
the
House Sitter." It's basically Lovey Howell in Mayberry.
George Lindsey is probably really bummin' over Bob Denver's passing. He
got into a fight with Bob at Denver's house after both appeared together in a
'Love, American Style' episode. They made up immediately afterward. Goober
also kissed Tina Louise (Ginger) in an episode of 'Love, American Style.'
Some character actors who appeared on both "Andy" and "Gilligan" are Vito
Scotti and Don Rickles.

Actually, Lydia, you're being modest. While it is true Helen, Thelma
Lou, Peggy, Aunt Bee, etc. didn't provide many laughs, you dear lady
did. No offense but when you started telling Goober, Andy, and Barney
what you did and didn't like it was hilarious!

Ellie Walker had a moment or two with Opie but most esp. when she made
the face at him thru the drugstore window.

One question dear Lydia, why did you and Goober break up? I though y'all
hit it off those times y'all went out. What happened? Did he get fresh?
You can tell me, I won't repeat it.

>>>While the men characters enjoyed some of the best humor that has ever been

>>>either childish or boring (an exception being with the extra players like
>>>the Fun Girls or the Lady Convicts--their humor was on par with the men's).
>>>Very little of the main women's parts had depth and almost none of it had
>>>real humor.<<<

If I recall correctly, in the reunion show "Thirty Years of Andy," Everett
Greenbaum said something to the effect that the reason they didn't keep Ellie
Walker as a character on the show after the first year was that the writers
didn't know how to write for women. They weren't comfortable writing for
women's roles and didn't quite know how to approach it. (I always thought this
seemed a little odd, actually.) Since there were a number of different writers
for the show over the years, either (1) all the writers through the course of
the show had this same difficulty, or (2) this was by design, in order to
reserve the funniest lines and situations for the main stars, which were the
men. Or perhaps it was a combination of both. I don't think I've heard this
issue addressed before, other than by Mr. Greenbaum's comment.

It could have been partly a product of the times. However, "The Dick Van Dyke
Show" is definitely an exception to that, as Laura was spotlighted in several
shows with some very funny lines and situations. And certainly Sally always
had her share of funny lines. There were times when TAGS women were placed in
funny situations (such as when Aunt Bee got tipsy drinking the elixir), but the
women more often than not played "straight man" to the leading men.

I'd be interested to hear what others speculate (or know) about this tendency
in the writing.

I always thought that Bob Denver played Dud more like an Ernest T. type
character than the laid back Dud that Hoke Howell played.

When he was in the courthouse challenging Andy and dancing around,
suggesting weapons. Willow Swithches or ???? whatever that was.

Whenever I look up information about an actor/actress or movie or television
show, I use www.imdb.com

It is almost accurate (found an omission recently) and has lots of good
details, such as filming locations, crazy credits,
trivia, goofs...along with info on actors/actresses either directly or through
the movies/shows. There are LOTS of hyperlinks on this site!!

The omission I found was not related to TAGS but was for an actress I
recognized from a movie; she was doing a small role on a tv show. IMDB didn't
have her info showing this role, but I did find it using google, just typed in
her name and the role and got my answer -- it was the same lady.

I use IMDB alot for trivia.

Rest in Peace beloved Dud/Maynard/Gilligan, and may God comfort your
family...and fans.

> I heard tonight we got 20 firemen going down from Wheatland, WY

Phoenix Fire Dept. has a FEMA search and rescue team, of which I'm a member...
I just returned from a 2 week deployment in New Orleans... 12 hours a day on a
boat going up and down city streets looking for survivors... Surreal to say
the least...
I wonder how Mayberry Fire Dept would have handled this? I'm also glad I
didn't have Andy's boat! (trying to get back on topic)

Actually, it should be "over there"... Up means away from the earth and down
means toward the center of the earth... At least that's how it was back when I
was in school (grin)

I guess paying attention during Ms. Crumps vocabulary lesson paid off!
