My family got to meet Bob Denver back in the 70's. We were at a
bluegrass festival in the Los Angeles area, and Hoyt Axton was
performing there. Hoyt had just recently bought the split level
Greyhound Supercruiser bus that had belonged to the group Commander
Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.

Anyhow, we had permission to be on the bus to talk to Doug Dillard,
and Bob Denver was on the bus. As I recall, his hair was salt and
pepper colored at that time. As a teenager, I didn't realize that
Bob had a part on TAGS.....we were just fans of The Dillards.

Bob will definitely be missed by a lot of folks.

Jim

I liked Warren. I also liked the Jerry Van Dyke character. Warren was a
great addition and one he left Andy rarely did any Sheriffin' at all.
The Court House became a place to sit a spell and gossip or play
checkers or what have you.

Does anyone know why the 2 different mayors were written out? I liked
both Mayor Pike and esp. Mayor Stoner and it wasn't right that there
wasn't a mayor after season 3.

My daughter was watching the Bethovan III movie today, and in it,
somebody was holding up what looks like a DVD box, says the name of a
movie (which I didn't catch) and said it was Don Knotts' best movie.

Does anybody happen to know which movie was mentioned?

Jim

I was watching the U.S. Armed Forces Network in Korea yesterday, and
they were running a PSA featuring quotes on parenting. It was a
pleasant surprise to see that the last quote was "The first sign of
youngsters going wrong, you've got to nip it in the bud." The quote
was attributed to our favorite deputy from 1960! Barney's made it
all the way over to South Korea!

TAGS fans,

Was watching "Opie and the Spoiled Kid" and saw
something I never noticed before. From the beginning
of the "impound scene" (where Barney first confronts
the spolied kid) to the conclusion (when Andy prevents
Barney from riding the bike on the sidewalk) the
background shadows change so tremendously that the
scene--which takes up maybe 5 minutes of screen
time--must have taken a whole day to film. And it's
not just the annatural shadows caused by the lighting
of the scene(s). Watch the shadows of the buildings
and the light poles in the distance.

On the other hand, the fact that I noticed this scares
me. :-)

While I can't attend Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy this year I experienced a slice
of Mayberry at our United Methodist church picnic "The Gathering," today in
Celina, Ohio. Church members were invited to bring collectibles and share their
talents in a talent show. I presented a message about our God given talents but
based it around The Andy Griffith Show, episode 216 when Howard Sprague
appeared on Col. Tim's Talent Time and 1 Corinthians 12.

Also, I took some of my TAGS collectibles. Sue and Ann Miller, also of Celina,
brought their stuff. Sue , a D.A.R.E. officer has a cool replica Mayberry Squad
Car with Don Knott's signature on the dashboard. We even gave away door prizes
... Aunt Bee's Delightful Desserts Cookbook, a jar of Aunt Bee's Kerosene
Cucumbers, No Thanks Leon Peanut Butter and Jelly and a box of Ernest T Tea.
For the last three prizes I scanned in a trading card with the photo and then
turned it into a label and taped them to the jar. People really seemed to get a
kick out of it.

All of us are single and we even gave out kisses (peanut butter kisses -- could
use Hershey's). I had a collage of Mayberry characters pictured and the sign on
the basket read, " Thanks for visiting our exhibit. Lots of Luck to You and
Yours! Sue, Ann & Cathy, Mayberry's Fun Girls. Have a Mayberry Kiss on us. No,
not that kind. After this is a church picnic and as Sheriff Andy Taylor said to
Ed Sawyer in episode 10, "A Stranger in Town," "Heck, some folks don't even
hold hands around here in public until after their fifth or sixth youngin's
been born."

Anyway, to top to off I came home tonight and watched the Emmy's. Tears welled
up in my eyes when they showed two Mayberry cast members who passed away last
year. Howard Morris and Denver Pyle. Well I know this is a little long but
thought sharing my idea might give you all some of your own ideas for TAGS
gifts. It might also spark some conversation, as to what other Mayberry
products we could create from products currently on the market. Cathy a.ka.

The Mayberry Confidential is now available to download from the Surry Arts
Council's website. It includes the official schedule of events, plus photos
and stories from the festival, as well as the upcoming events sponsored by
SAC. This newpaper will be located throughout Mount Airy at hotels,
restaurants and shops.

I saw the episode that came right after the Barney/Thelma Lou reunion episode.
Andy introduced Barney to Warren, and in the end Barney sort of passed the
deputy reigns on to Warren. I think the writers wanted the audience to see
that and accept Warren. It would have probably been easier for us to have
accepted Warren if he'd been eased into the role. I could imagine a lot of
good episodes with Andy trying out several people as temporary deputy and it
not working well. All along Floyd would be saying, "you aught to talk to my
nephew in Boston, oh he's a good boy, finished 4th in class from the Sheriff's
academy".

Well that's my opinion anyway. As they say, "Everyone has an opinion." Did
Calvin Coolidge say that?
