I wonder if Opie was ever told to "go cut me a switch." Anybody else ever
had to do that?

Hey, thanks for all the great feedback to my question about "whipping". One
of the reasons I asked, and I forgot to mention it in my first posting, was
when the spoiled kid with the bicycle was going to be taken behind the
courthouse to the "old fashioned woodshed", Opie asked Andy if he was going
to get a "spanking". Just thought it was interesting that Opie did not use
the word whipping, thus my confusion over the two terms.

"That is his reference several times to giving Opie a "whipping" for doing
something wrong. Is this a phrase that was used for a spanking in the
southern regions of the US? We all know that Andy was such a loving father,
it just seems so out of character. Just find it interesting that the
writers chose to use that particular term."
*******************************************
I grew up in the south and whippin', whoopin', switchin' and lickin' were
all terms for a mild slap on the tucas . One time and only once, my mother
picked a willow branch, took off all the leaves and "switched" me across the
back of my thighs.. twice. The she sat and cried. I comforted her, we both
cried, my brother laughed and it never happened again. I don't remember for
what I received the lickin'. All I remember is that my mother was a very
tender and loving woman.
SOOO...the answer is as others have so succulently stated here, yes it is a
southern term and not to be any way to be confused with those poor
children who might have been"strapped" or "beat."
Sincerly,
Miss Dolly

>>>I concur with Allan. Growing up in the Deep South, I received a
'whippin' or two (and one or two from the principal at school, too). It
just basically means spankin'. It was also referred to as switchin'. Now
them switchin's was rough on the naked leg!<<<
My Mama and Daddy just shook hands on their deal...and I headed to my
bedroom for a little meeting (which caused soreness). Surprised nobody
mentioned the woodshed with the hickory stick that ole Arnold Winkler
got for throwing' his fits. I don't think Andy mentioned a hickory
stick...but if there was one there, I 'bet ole Arnold was cryin' a new
tune.
OK, everybody, back on the truck... We probably don't want to get too
far of topic here.
--You ever notice that In "Floyd the Gay Deceiver", Andy refers to Floyd
as "Floyd" instead of Dad before the lady spills her guts and tells the
truth?
Wishin you all a 4 bowls of white beans type tribute this weekend.

While " whippin' " sure doesn't sound good - I was watching " Little House
on the Prairie" the other night and little Laura asked Michael Landon if he was
going to give her a "skinnin' ".
I think that sounds a WHOLE lost worse than whippin'.
Also - even though Andy talked about spanking Opie, I can't think of a
single time that he actually did it.
In fact, the only spanking that I recall is the one that Arnold, the brat
that wanted Andy to put his dad in jail rather than impound his bike, was
about
to get from his father as they headed to the old-fashioned wood shed in back
of the courthouse.

The comments about whippin' and spankin' sure brought back memories.
Being raised in the South by a long line of southeners, I knew the
difference between a simple spankin' and a whippin'. Mama let us get by
with a lot. My sister and I got an occasional spankin' from her; usually
it consisted of a swat on the behind. She usually just said, "Wait till
your daddy gets home." That was enough, because THAT meant a whippin'.
The fear of the "pain" from a whippin' stopped me from doing a LOT of
"bad"stuff in life. Daddy used his leather belt and gave us 2 licks
across the back of the legs. It was enough and it WORKED. If I did
something really bad, I got 3.
Mama only gave me ONE whippin' that I ever remember. I was supposed to
walk straight home from elementary school. It was
eight blocks. I was taught to always call home if I stopped off to play at
a friend's house, etc.
One day I walked home with my friend, Georgia Hestand. Her family was
moving the next day, so their phone was already disconnected. Now,
being raised right, I KNEW to ask Mrs. Hestand to help me use a
neighbor's phone to call home. I made a mistake and did not bother.
After a while, close to 5 p.m., as I was walking home (sensing I might
be in REAL trouble already) I looked down the street; it looked like my
Mama in the front yard. As I got closer I could see that she was pacing
back and forth in the yard, crying and sobbing, and in her hand was
MY Annie Oakley leather belt. Fear struck my heart. As soon as I got
into the edge of our yard, Mama came towards me, sobbing, and swatting me
with that belt. With every swat, maybe 3 or 4, she was sobbing and
telling me about my not calling her and about how afraid she was that I
might have been dead, or something like that! Then, she stopped crying and
got angry. Then she said, "Sheila, wait till your Daddy gets home." I
knew I was gonna die, but I did not. Daddy listened to the story and then
gave me a "trial dismissed" and I promised to always call; always!
A spankin' was with the hand and for minor problems; a whippin' was, at
least in our case, with Daddy's belt, usually 2 or 3 light hits on the
back of the legs and it was over. I deserved almost every one. :-)

Dave I loved your poem "Reflections", it made me feel like I was sittin' on the
porch with Aunt Bee just enjoying the evening. Thank you for sharing this with
us you did a great job.
Allan I hope we are not making a big moulage out of the "whippin" thoughts, but
I figured I would share my experiences. Though I was born here in Cincinnati,
both of my parents were born and raised in Mississippi, so they had that
southern way of child raising. We knew if we misbehaved at church when we got
home, we were in for a whipping, not a beating. I guess folks that never
received a whipping always picture a kid actually being beaten, but like most
of you I usually got what I deserved. The worst part for me was the waiting
for the whipping to come. Boy was I glad when it was over!! Like Opie, it
always tore me up that I had disappointed my parents, especially my sweet Mama.
Lots of luck to you and yours!
Anita

Hello All,
Had the opportunity to speak with Carol Summers at the Hollywood Collectors
Show on October 1st. She is apparently Mariette Hartley's manager in addition
to being Don's manager as well. Carol said Don is doing well and is expecting
to attend the next Hollywood show late January in Burbank. It will be nice to
see him in action again.
