A short time ago, Allan asked for submissions of WBMUTBB memories as we
come up upon our anniversary.
I think it was April 1990. I had started a TAGS post on the Prodigy
internet bulletin board. It went for about a week or so and died out.
About a week or two later, a post was instituted by Allan Newsome and
several people and myself joined in. It was a fun discussion and this
time, the subject line wasn't gonna die because Allan's passion for the
subject wouldn't let it. Not only was the discussion stimulating, but
whenever a Ben Weaver came through, Allan (as unofficial moderator)
would put a stop to any negativity and get us on track to chatting about
one of our favorite subjects. Later that year (Allan says it was 1991,
so I'll go with him), we voted on names for a TAGSRWC chapter, and
WBMUTBB was born. By then, we had quite a few regular contributors and
over time, we had the longest running continuous subject on the Prodigy
network. But you must know that Allan's careful nurturing of the board
made it a fun place to come to, just as it is now. The great
contributors over the years have also made it one of the nicest places
to visit on the Internet, flame-free. As things progressed, we left
Prodigy and Allan developed the board as it is today.
Many of us sit back and grin as we here (for about the 23rd time) a
discussion about how many times it rained in Mayberry. Unless I miss my
guess, there will be a discussion soon about how many African-Americans
were spotted in Mayberry. And we recognize that there is absolutely
nothing wrong with these discussions as newer members have not been in
the loop with prior subjects.
One of the very best parts of being here the whole 14 years is that I
can call Allan newsome my friend. He is one of the highest quality
persons I've ever met. His dedication and many hours put in to the
bulletin board over the years deserves it's own award. I thank you for
that, Allan. Happy Anniversary!
Since Allan requested bulletin board memories, if you don't have a
special one to submit, could I ask everyone throughout our anniversary
month of November to please state how long you've been a member at the
end of your post. Thanks.

I don't think Thelma Lou ever sang in the church choir. She was in John
Master's choir which was not part of the church. As far as how many
churches could a small town like Mayberry support, I grew up in a town of
400 people and there were four very active churches in our town, so Mayberry
being a town of over 1000 surely must have had more than one church. But if
they didn't then there sure weren't many church goers in Mayberry from the
size of their church.
By the way I am teaching another Mayberry Bible Study at our church starting
the second Tuesday of November. I taught a four session group this summer
and had twelve participants and this time there are thirteen signed up so
far.

>>>the way Russel Hyatt told me, he cut Andy's hair once and was the last
in town to do so right before Andy left. He made no claim to be his regular
long term barber.<<<
Thank you for that information! That would explain why Andy didn't remember
having his hair cut by Mr. Hiatt. Perhaps the story has gotten a bit twisted
in the retelling and that's why I thought (and why Andy apparently thought)
that Mr. Hiatt had claimed to be Andy's barber when Andy was a boy. Your post
clarifies the situation nicely.

I may now qualify as a trained noticer. I have been watching the first
season of TAGS on DVD. In one of the first shows, there is a sign over the
drugstore counter that said "enlargments" . I told my husband that it was
spelled
wrong. The "e" was missing after the "g". I am now watching the fourth DVD and
saw the Frankie the farmgirl show last night. "Enlargments" was changed to
"Enlargements", the correct way to spell it. Never noticed that before. Now,
if I can just get my local grocery store to leave the "e" off the end of
potato, I will be happy.
"I" before "e" except after "c" and "e" before "n" as in "chicken".

Re: Besides, how many churches could a small town like Mayberry support?
I think quite a few, actually. Andy once told us that Mayberry was a
town of about two thousand. Now I grew up (in the seventies) in a
small town in NW Florida called Baker. Baker held about five hundred
souls and we had more churches than you could shake a stick at. I
would guess at least a dozen - but then we were in the buckle of the
bible belt. I think there must have been other houses of worship in
Mayberry.

"What do you think about Thelma Lou either taking care of the kids in the
nursery/children's church or maybe she was working in the church office?"
I think her taking care of the kids is wonderful. It's logical and fits her
character. Working in the office isn't quite as logical because the office
would probably be closed during a service.

Martha says that the current Screen Actors' Guild rules give an actor up to
6 lines before they have to be paid extra. I certainly don't know what the
rules were when TAGS was in production, but it certainly looks like they
were operating under the no lines rule. Think of all the cast away lines
and reaction shots that would have been a little better if a word had been
spoken. And dear ol' Mr. Schwamp. Couldn't you see him being developed as
a quirky minor character with a line here and a line there?
Ah, but that would have done away with the mystery, wouldn't it? Mr.
Schwamp was probably an operatic profundo bass in real life and hearing him
speak would have destroyed the Mr. Schwamp personnnal he worked so hard to
develop. But that's just the actor of the man.

Maybe she went up past the Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge and attended church
with the Darlings when the circuit preacher came around.

In the Christmas episode, wasn't the street wet when Ben Weaver was trying to
carry off the bench? Must have been raining (or snowing) earlier.
