Does anyone have any articles or photos of the Medal of Freedom ceremony? My
local newspaper's article barely mentioned Andy and I'm so disappointed.

As y'all know, Andy was one of 14 honored at the White House on
Wednesday by receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President
Bush. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the
U.S.-shazam! Among other recipients was radio commentator Paul Harvey,
who has expressed his fondness for TAGS many times, and Carol Burnett,
who appeared a couple of times as a Marine Corps officer on Gomer Pyle,
USMC.
Here's the text of President Bush's remarks at the ceremony regarding
Ange:
Here at the White House, we get an interesting mix of visitors. Already
today I've met with the Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, and
the Dalai Lama -- and the Sheriff of Mayberry. (Laughter.) Andy Griffith
first came to the people's attention with his gift for storytelling --
and his own life is a mighty fine story by itself. He started out as a
high school teacher, and in his amazing career he has gained fame as an
actor, and received a Grammy Award for his singing. He will always be
remembered for the "Andy Griffith Show" and "Matlock." Yet, he has also
given powerful dramatic performances in such movies as "A Face in the
Crowd."
Looking back on his Mayberry days, Andy explained the timeless appeal of
the show. He said "it was about love. Barney would set himself up for a
fall, and Andy would be there to catch him." (Laughter.) The enduring
appeal of the show has always depended -- and still does -- on the
simplicity and sweetness and rectitude of the man behind the badge. TV
shows come and go, but there's only one Andy Griffith. And we thank him
for being such a friendly and beloved presence in our American life.
(Applause.)
Here's the text of the citation for Andy:
Andy Samuel Griffith
Andy Griffith is one of America's best-known and most beloved
entertainers. After his introduction to a national audience as a
stand-up comedian on The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s, he went on to
star in such celebrated television shows as The Andy Griffith Show and
Matlock. As a legend of the stage, cinema, and television, Andy Griffith
has built an enduring career and set a standard of excellence in
entertainment. He is a man of humor, integrity, and compassion. The
United States honors Andy Griffith for demonstrating the finest
qualities of our country and for a lifetime of memorable performances
that have brought joy to millions of Americans of all ages.

C-Span will be airing the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony at
8:00 AM and 11:00 PM on Saturday.
Also, below is a transcript of the Presidents comments about Andy
during the ceremony.

Happy Anniversary Allan on 15 great years of the Digest. And to you
too, Mr. Bravetta (sp?), Jim Clark and any other charter members.
I was surprised when I dug in to find out that I have only been a member
since 1999. The Digest is so much a part of my daily routine, and I've
gotten so much enjoyment out of it, it seems like its been much longer.
I appreciated reading Bob's recollections, because as a relative
old-timer, I too see the same things coming up again and again as new
members join..and those topics are like Aunt Bee's Pickles. We learn to
love 'em. I remember I thought I was the first one to discover Allan
Melvin and his many roles....and then I realized I was probably the 37th
person to bring it up on the Digest..but I still enjoy responding to the
43rd and the 44th etc. person to ask about "that bully guy".
I remember a lot of ups and downs with the Digest in my short tenure.
There were mechanical problems, touchy subjects, hurt feelings,
inappropriate comments, even criticism of Allan and his wonderful rules,
and like this week, sad news of real lives ending. Those were the
downers, but they are greatly surpassed by all the good things that
happen here. The laughs, the new friends, the wonderful sharing of
knowledge, the events, the pictures, hearing about the stars lives
today, the Mayberry Moments, the poetry, the TAGS sightings, and all the
surprises that come from a group so large and diverse have been
wonderful.
I think about the kind of Andy Griffith show fan I was before I found
the Website and the Digest...and the kind of fanatic I am now, having
been to a couple events, buying a few books, Reading the Digest every
day, taping the shows and buying DVDs, watching the shows over and over
again looking for the kinds of things we talk about...and I have to
modify a quote from the Movie "As Good as it Gets" and say..
"Being here with all of you makes me want to be a better Fan" (of the
Andy Griffith Show)
We all look to the Digest for some of the same things, and some
different things. I don't care much for Blue Willow dishes or Recipes
or Hawthorne Village figures or autographs...but I enjoy reading about
them because I know that many of you do enjoy them. I enjoy the
interesting observations, the trivia challenges, the LOL humor that some
of you provide, the stories that we build on together, and much much
more...but I think my real favorite, My Eagle Eye Annie, is the audience
and interaction that all of you provide for my unending babbling.
Lets face it, some of us are readers and some of us are more writers.
I'm a confessed writer. I use this forum as an outlet for my
creativity. I know that whether anyone answers my post or not, a lot of
folks read it, and hopefully a couple enjoyed it. I'm a real
writer-wannabe. If they had an American Idol for writers..I would be
one of those crazies that the judges would howl at in the early
auditions, and send packing..but I would have my moment. Barring that
happening or an unanticipated career change..you are my "moment" each
day that I choose to contribute something to the Digest.
To 15 more years! Thanks for the memories, Thanks for the interactive
Forum.
I'm a bird chirp-chirping off-key out in the woods whether anyone is
listening or not. Thanks for being there reading. For all us writer
wanna-be's who don't really have the talent, thanks for being a great
listening bunch of like-minded fans. That's why I'm called
The Untrained Voice
"I am talkin' I am talkin'--the more you answer, the less I'm balkin'
