My husband said that Mr. Hagen talked to the students about the show and
whistled the theme for them. I asked my husband if he was really aware at
the time about TAGS and who Mr. Hagen was. He said that he knew enough
about the show to be somewhat aware of who Mr. Hagen was. Wow, what a great
opportunity, and he wasn't even old enough to really appreciate it! But I
thought it was a cool story, though! :) Lisa <<<
I was lucky enough to visit Earle Hagen at his home a couple of years ago
and asked him about going around to different schools because a DJ on a
local radio station remembered a similar meeting when hew was in Elementary
School. Well, I hate to burst your bubble but, Mr Hagen said that he never
did that and that someone was traveling around using his name. I don't
remember the complete story, but maybe he'll attend Mayberry Days next year
and someone can ask him that.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that was most likely Fred Lowery, not Earle
Hagen. Earle never went on tour. After recording the theme in 1960, he
never whistled professionally again, until Return to Mayberry when he
recorded the theme again.
Fred Lowery (1909-1984) was a famous blind whistler who had no connection
with TAGS. He toured extensively, performing at hundreds of churches and
school assemblies during the 1960s and 1970s. At each of his shows, he
always performed The Andy Griffith Theme, and people got the idea he was the
one who whistled the tune for The Show (it seems Mr. Lowery encouraged the
rumors himself). His autobiography, "Whistling in the Dark" was published
in 1983.

In "Mr. McBeeVee," Thurston Holmes was given screen credit. I've no idea
why; he was only a stunt performer (climbing poles).
The credits for "If I Had a Quarter-Million" list Alfred Hopson as The
Farmer, but no such person appears in the episode. Perhaps it was a small
part that got cut out, and they forgot to change the credits.

I think a nice idea for a new TAGS script would be a story centered on the
kids of Mayberry as they are now. You would utilize all of Opie's friends from
the whole run of the show. George "Tex" Foley would be an urban cowboy. Joy
Ellison would be speaking some colorful dialect. Sheldon "the bully" would be
experiencing anxiety disorders because Opie tore into him like a windmill
all those years ago. Steve Quincy , who called Opie "Dopey", would have an
extensive criminal record. Arnold Winkler, the "spoiled kid", would return as
a
pastor. Johnny Paul and Arnold would be two of Opie's closet confidants. We'd
see Pamelyn Ferdin crying over missed dinners and other things. Morgan
Brittany's character would be a thrice divorced yet still sexy woman who'd
come to
Mayberry looking for anything but love. Don't forget Clint Howard as a
renegade Leon either. This would be quite an ensemble.

Regarding the closing credits with Andy & Opie walking back from the
fishin' hole, I do have some old VHS tapes with episodes taped off
television from the mid to late 1980's that do show this scene. I
haven't looked at them lately, but it's from one of the color seasons,
I'm guessing season 7. It does NOT have any sponsor logo, however. I
would guess that is the original closing credits and by that season,
there probably was not a single show sponsor.
Opie is barefoot and is carrying one or more fish. Part way through the
credits, he drops a fish and turns around to retrieve it. Pretty cool.

Yep - may thanks to Allen for his dedication to such a wonderful escape back
to the "good ole days". I've only been a member for a couple of years (maybe a
little less), but we've had a chapter of TAGSRWC (Sweet Juanite)for almost 20
years I think. Been a fan for much longer - since the show began really. I
used to sell electronics so have always had VCRs and had almost all of the
episodes recorded on tape - and still have them. I'll be glad when they're all
on DVD so I can toss those old tapes. Sure has been a special part of our
lives out here in the West.

There are a *lot* of issues with a goat eating dynamite. Assuming he
*doesn't* get poisoned, there's a question of whether a goat would even eat
dynamite,
and if so, would it not explode while he chewed it up? There are also
questions over whether his digestive juices would neutralize the powders, but
once
again, all of that assumes Jimmy doesn't die from poisoning, which would be
most likely.
Still, the fact that the writers pulled it off is a testament to them and to
the actors.

>>>Things like this, sharing wonderful news and friendship, are the

That's a great story Allan
Yer such a price of a fellow, I'll bet you bought that first box of
chocolates for each of them. The last episode of TAGS shown was about a
computer-match relationship, and you just carried on that tradition.
This little internet presence is just like Andy's living room, or Mrs.
Wi-ley's party, and for those lucky couples, you just invited all the
prospects in for a look-see. If any of the happy couples are still out
there, it would be great to hear from them. We already have our
Mayberry Days Bride, how about those Mayberry.com marriages?? Mayberry
was a place where many relationships were born, but also happy singles,
and long-time marrieds coexisted in harmony as friends, just like we do
here.

Dear WBMUTBB: Anyone catch last night's episode of "Desperate Housewives"?
The woman playing the wife of Teri Hatcher's long-lost father was Joyce Van
Patten, who appeared in Episode 224, Opie Steps Up in Class, as Laura
Hollander. Joyce Van Patten is also is a sister to Dick Van Patten from
Eight is Enough.

I can recall a Gomer Pyle USMC episode where Gomer saved the Sergeant's
life, and vice-versa, one pulling the other from a defective gas heater,
or something like that. It had the same markings as an episode of TAGS
with Goober saving Andy's life also. Each character would annoyingly
follow the other around as a bodyguard type of figure. I suppose the
same writers wrote for both shows.
