Hello Everyone - I looked on the Weaver's Web Site and they make no
mention of having the DVD's available. At least I could not find the
info if it is there. This should be in big bold print on their site
somewhere if they are going to sell the DVD's. They seem awfully slow
in posting that they will carry the DVD's. Amazon is now taking
pre-orders. Surely Weaver's will have them? I plan on giving them my
business, but shouldn't they tell us something? If anyone has
information that Weaver's will have the DVD's for sale and when, please
let me know, and I won't say another word. If I missed seeing this on
the Weaver's site, please excuse this email. Thanks, Jim

*****FROM TAGSRWC HQ*****

Since the upcoming release of the entire first season of TAGS on DVD is
of keen interest to many Mayberry fans, I want to let everyone know that
TAGSRWC's Weaver's Dept. Store will of course be carrying them and that
we will ship them to customers on the first day that anyone is permitted
to do so. (The current official release date is Oct. 12, but there has
been some mention of Paramount's bumping that date to Nov. 16.)

We'll probably start accepting orders (online, by phone, and by mail)
about 10 days before the release date. (We don't see any advantage to
our customers in our taking orders earlier because it won't allow us to
ship to them any sooner. And we'll have plenty of DVDs on hand, so there
won't be a danger of our running out if we don't log your order 2 or 3
months in advance.

We don't yet know what the Weaver's price for these DVDs will be. We're
still shopping for the best possible price that a group our size can
get. The suggested retail price is $40.00. Our price should be able to
be a good bit less than that price. I doubt we'll be able to get as low
as huge-volume places like Amazon because, frankly, we can't afford to
lose money on what likely be a best-selling item. (A place like Amazon
can afford to make pennies or even take a loss on certain items they
sell because they make back the loss in other ways.) But you can be sure
that Weaver's will have the new DVDs at the lowest possible price that
we can manage.

One other quick note: The Weaver's shipping dept will be on vacation
from Aug. 12 to 23. As always, we can still receive your orders during
that time, but they won't ship out until the 24th.

Dapper Dan, interesting you should mention Parley Baer and old time radio. I
subscribe to an email list devoted to OTR and someone dropped in a topic on
all the OTR stars who appeared on "The Andy Griffith Show," and boy did he ever
create a moulage! It seems to be almost dominating that list these days. A
*whole* lot of OTR actors were on TAGS in one role or another, including Don
Knotts ("Bobby Benson"), Howard McNear ("Gunsmoke") and Olan Soule ("The First
Nighter"). And I had forgotten the episode where Opie and the other boy are
competing for the job, the shopkeeper was played by Norris Goff, Abner of "Lum
and Abner"!

When Baer died, the people on the email list told a lot of stories that he
shared at the OTR conventions, about rushing throughout New York to appear on
as
many as four live radio shows (including soap operas) in a single day. And
don't forget that on radio, Parley Baer created not one but *two* beloved
future TV characters: Chester on "Gunsmoke" (co-starring our beloved Floyd as
Doc)
and Eb on "Green Acres."

What episode was Floyd's Comet Convertible in? I remember the old sedan
he had (Model A?) in Convicts at Large but don't remember a Comet.

If sweating was an Olympic event, I'd win the gold medal. I sweat in below
zero weather. I think Barney would be a contestant in that event too as many
times as he got himself in a pickle.

I had two Mayberry sightings this weekend. I was watching "The Long, Long
Trailer and saw Norman Leavitt (one of the many Wallys) and also our beloved
Howard McNear (Floyd). I also was watching the Flintstones and the voice of
the dr was none other than Howard McNear. Did he do any other cartoon
voices?

I must also tell you about a wonderful Mayberry moment I had at my church.
Our pastor was speaking from behind the pulpit. You know the ones with the
long mike that comes up from the middle. He was speaking and all of a sudden
the mike was giving him trouble so he just grabs it and pulls it down on the
pulpit. I busted out laughing. I could just see Barney in his first car
wrestling with the steering column. Don't you just love it when you can
relate almost anything to a TAGS episode!

>>>On the episode"Andy's rich girlfriend"Andy mentions that Thelma Lou has
brothers,I have never heard anymore of the episodes to mention this, does
anyone know anything about this and was it ever mentioned again.

In that episode, Andy is referring collectively to both Thelma Lou and Peggy
when he says "both the girls have brothers." Therefore, it's possible that
Thelma Lou and Peggy each have exactly one brother, but it's also possible
that one or both of them have multiple brothers. Outside of that one brief
reference, we never learn anything else about Thelma Lou's siblings. Or
maybe Andy was just making a joke; perhaps he doesn't even know whether or
not Thelma Lou and Peggy have siblings.

As for other folks in town, we know that Aunt Bee has at least one brother
(see "Aunt Bee's Medicine Man" and "Floyd's Barbershop"), Clara has a
brother named Claude ("Opie's Group"), and of course we meet Otis' brother
Ralph in "Otis the Deputy." Floyd mentions a sister in "Otis Sues the
County"; this may be Warren Ferguson's mother. On Mayberry RFD, Goober has
a brother named Braden Pyle -- a brilliant man working for NASA.

>>>Now as far as that "most different roles" questions..it looks like Paul
and I agreed on the top three, but had different people at the top. (Mary
Lansing and Bob McQuain) ... I just counted the different character names
they have in the database. (that's the history book I was referring to) Bob
has 11 and Mary has 12...but Paul probably has something more accurate.

Well, I said Bob M. had "about 15 different roles" because in various
episodes it's often difficult to tell whether he's playing a new character,
or the same one as before. Most of the time, nobody addresses these minor
characters by name. BTW, it was I who created that database.
