We've discussed before, the large number of cast commercials made by the cast
of TAGS especially for its network sponsor, General Foods. This is a favorite
topic of mine. At first they made a specific one for every episode, as late
as the "Mr. McBeeVee" episode, but I don't know if they did that for the whole
run. A recent documentary on cable showed a montage of Sanka commercials
done by Andy; one of them showed Opie blowing a bugle or trumpet while he, Aunt
Bee and Andy discuss Sanka.

Here are some others:

"The New Housekeeper"--Andy and Opie for Sanka
the first season show about the feuding couple--Andy and the couple for Sanka
Andy, Aunt Bee and Opie for Post Toasties (I think it's from the one with
Buddy Ebsen)
Andy and Barney for Grape Nuts
Andy and the Morrison Sisters (from their episode) about Post Sugar Crisp
"Mr. McBeeVee"--Andy, Opie and Barney (and Opie's horse!) for Jell-O pudding
the last episode ("Mayberry RFD")--Opie and Aunt Bee for Shake and Bake

Someone once told me they saw a spot that showed Andy feeding a Gaines Burger
to someone's dog. That would be highly likely since Gaines Burgers were made
by General Foods, the show's sponsor. Other products I remember advertised
on the show that *could* have been cast commercials would be regular Jell-O,
Birdseye Frozen Foods & Orange Juice, Maxwell House coffee (regular or
instant),
Log Cabin syrup and Cool-Whip. SOS pads were made by General Foods in the
'60s and did advertise on TAGS but are now owned by the Clorox people.

Wasn't the total $200?... Goober added up the total of all the prizes and it
came to $200 but he forgot to put a line before the $200. $200 back then was
like a pot of gold to someone in a small town.....$500 would have been like
hitting the biggest lottery jackpot in history!

Harriet, my chickens and I could use $200, $500, or any amount........

Thanks for posting all the good information on the upcoming TAGS DVDs
and Weaver's having them for us. Like all TAGS fans, I would much
rather do business with Weaver's than Amazon anyway.

Thanks again -Jim

Does anyone know whether commercials will be included as bonuses on the new
DVDs? If not in the 1st-season release, perhaps Paramount Home Entertainment
will consider including them somewhere down the line. That would be a nice
touch. Otherwise, the sets cannot really be called complete, as the commercials
were done "in character."

I think it is obvious. Opie is "The Keeper of the Flame".

>>>How many commercials were made with characters from TAGS? I have seen
three, Andy - Post Toasties, Andy & the Morrison Sister - Post Sugar
Crisps, and Andy & Barney with Post Grape-Nuts.

The exact number is not known, but one feller who was old enough to watch
TAGS in its original run told me he remembered that they would use the same
commercial for about three weeks, then change it. So, if this is correct,
there may have been as many as 83 different commercials made with the TAGS
cast.

When the show was new, there was one commercial at the beginning, and one at
the end. The one at the beginning came right after Opie threw his second
rock during the opening credits. There was a closeup of the rock splashing
into the water, then the announcer said "... brought to you by ..." followed
by the ad. One such ad showed Andy and Opie pulling Gertrude (the boat) out
of the water, then switched to shots of cereal boxes while the two sang a
jingle that went something like this:

You know a cereal will please you most,
When it comes to you in a package from Post,
'Cause all Post cereals happen to be, just a little better,
A little bit better, a little bit better,
Than any other cereal happens to be.

The other commercial came at the end, after the epilogue and before the
closing credits. It usually had two or three cast members from the just
completed episode, and it often went along with the episode's storyline.
For example, in the commercial from the first episode, Andy tells Opie that
Dickie flew back home because he wanted a cup of Sanka! When Opie objects,
saying that parakeets don't drink coffee, Andy hushes him and says "the
sponsor don't know that."

The commercials that came in the middle of the episode were just regular old
commercials that didn't involve the TAGS cast.

I went to Weavers and purchased the Dillard's CD, "I Wish Life Was Like
Mayberry" by Rodney Dillard, primarily because I've always liked "Doug's Tune"
(track #4). I ordered on a Sunday and received on a Wednesday, now THAT'S
service. "Doug's Tune" (by Douglas Dillard) is similar but not quite what Doug
played on THE show.

The Dillards produced a CD entitled "Back Porch Bluegrass/Live! (Almost)" in
which Doug is the picker on the CD. "Doug's Tune" is more accurately
recreated on that CD, but Weaver's didn't have it so I had to purchase it from
another
source and wait eight days. I got what I wanted, but it just goes to show
you, if you want a good suit, ya gotta go to Raleigh.

Wow, lots of good answers by everyone...Margaret, Cay and others who jumped
in. Thanks for playing along with my Mayberry Olympic fantasy. I must
apologize to those who said Aunt Bee in Archery. I forgot she shot a bow
with John Canfield. Good answer.

Here are some of the tougher (or weirder) ones
--Steeple Chase--the Darlings, (one of them always wanted to get married you
know..so they're running to the Church steeple).
---Parallel bars--Otis..hitting all the "bars"
Those two were kind of a reach. You all did well on the others.

Now for the torch relay, here are the tough ones
Jack Egbert: He's no prize and the Games are full of winners so he wouldn't
fit in.
Mayor Pike's daughter: If we have her run, she won't try to sing
Halcyon Winslow: Beasto Maresto--don't want her
Mr. Schwamp; Hair might blow away if he runs too fast
Willis Cundiff: He's still in traction from getting kicked by a mule

Lots of good idea son the torch lighter, how about this.

Into the Olympic Stadium comes a convertible sports car. Goober is driving,
Floyd is in the passenger seat waving, and Clara and Aunt Bee are sitting on
the back, holding the torch up together. Clara is dressed at the Statue of
Liberty, and Bee is reading a patriotic poem over the PA system. Gomer is
marching in front of the car in his Marine full dress blues carrying the
American Flag and grinning from ear to ear. As they round the turn, they
light the next torch carried by another torch bearer.
Its on a flatbed truck and the torch is held by Malcolm Meriwether.
On the truck with him are Mr. Ozimotto from the Judo School, Flip Conroy the
Football Coach, Tom Strongbow the Indian, Mario and his family from Italy
who came to help Sam Jones on the farm, the Owner of the Chinese restaurant
and his nephew, the French Waiter, The Mexican Dancer, The Gypsies and
other African American faces we have seen in the crowd scenes. The truck
has a huge banner that says "Mayberry,Home to all Peoples and Cultures who
covet small town life--Our Town is your Town". The cheers just keep getting
louder and they handoff to the next Torch Bearer.

It's a lady, Thelma Lou, on a beautifully decorated float full of flowers
with the gorgeous faces of Helen, Ellie, Peggy, Nurse Mary, and lots of
other Mayberry Women. There is a large Banner that proclaims..."Good Luck
Female Athletes, from your friends and Role Models in Mayberry"

After another turn around the track, Helen steps down with the torch and
lights the flame on the torch or a small boy. He take off his baseball cap
and waves it, so that all can see it is Opie. Across s his chest is big
letters it says "Keeper of the Flame" He is joined by Arnold, Johnny Paul,
Whitey, Billy, Trey, Howie, Sharon, Karen, and other children They run with
Opie jumping and giving high fives to the delight of the crowd.

Opie then passes the Flame to another Flatbed truck. The flame is help
aloft by Howard Sprague and Sam Jones. Emmett, Martha, Millie, Flora and
others and are waving on either side of them, the truck is towing and old
cannon which is being ridden by Warren. On the back of the truck is the
familiar site of the Darling Family as the play their instruments and sing
"There is a Time" Charlene dances a little jig while Briscoe plays the jug.

They then stop at the base of the large Calderon where there appears to be a
small statue holding a torch. They light the torch of the statue..who then
throws aside a garment/covering to reveal our very own Barney Fife in
uniform. The noise rises again he starts running up the steps to light the
large Calderon. He tires about half-way up and Otis jumps out and grabs
Barney's arm, helps him hold up the torch and assists him further up the
steps.

They reach the top, and the light of the torch reveals a glass cover on the
Olympic Calderon. From above the Calderon a familiar giggling is heard just
as a brick crashes into the glass, shattering the torch cover. Ernest T
Bass laughs as he skips down the stairs. A startled Barney starts to light
the torch, when a man dressed in black runs by and steals the torch out of
his hand. A heavily armored and helmeted security guard grabs the man in
black, and wrestlers him to the ground as the crowd gasp, retrieving the
torch.

The guard begins to hand the torch back to Barney as he takes off
his Helmet. ITS Andy!! The crowd shrieks, as the guard takes off his flack
jacket to reveal his Sheriff's Uniform. They one-arm hug briefly as the man
in back is revealed to be Danny Thomas. Now Andy stands arm in arm with
Barney as together they lift the torch and ignite the Giant Calderon, and
the games begin.

The Untrained Voice
I can't take no credit, my mind just works that way.
