The announcer covering the shotput event commented on how incredible it was
the the event was held in the old, original arena in Greece. As the shotputs
hit the stone & dirt, he commented that this was fantastic & he felt like they
were playing sports" like back in Mayberry"!!! Made my day...TAGS is a global
thing...Good wishes to all

I have tape of the Hillbillies selling Kellogg's Corn Flakes, wish I could
see them selling Winstons. I have a show of theirs sponsored by Winston and
there's an extra lyric in the opening theme that transitions into the Winston
jingle.

I also have tape of Fred and Barney lighting up a couple of Winstons. There
was, indeed, some controversy about this at the time and Winston was dropped
as a "Flintstones" sponsor in 1963. Miles Laboratories took over and shortly
thereafter, Flintstones Vitamins were invented.

As has been pointed out on the list before, "Mayberry RFD" was co-sponsored
by several tobacco companies during its run. The first episode was sponsored
by General Foods but also had a Brown and Williamson/Virginia Slims ad in it.
Later eps were sponsored by Phillip Morris and even had the Marlboro pack in
the corner of the screen during the closing credits.

I hope you were a smart aleck and pointed out that if they count guest stars
there were *more than one* TAGS actor in "Benji"!

So, what was the answer to the trivia question...What actor from the Andy
Griffith show was also in the first Benjie movie? By the way, congratulations
on winning the prize for the correct answer!

Mayberrians, now they take care of their own. I was curious about dingo dogs
and Mr. Gary A. Johnson from Chicken Thieves & Whatnot Chapter sent me an
article about them, even had a picture of a dingo!

Thanks,

Regarding Willy Jack on the ship - maybe he didn't take Andy's advice, his
brakes did fail and he ended up in the drink....Then he got rescued by the ship
and had to swab the deck to pay them back.....

>>>When The Flintstones first came on,it was in prime time. Believe it or
not,I can remember Fred Flintstone doing a cigarette ad!

I remember those! There was one where Fred and Barney were just loafing
around in front of the house while their wives were hard at work. One of
the guys says something like, "Gee, I hate to see the girls working so
hard," and the other says "Me too, let's go around back where we won't be
able to see them." They proceed to light up a couple of Winstons. The
Flintstones season one DVD set includes several cast commercials for
vitamins, but no cigarette ads.

For the record, The Flintstones premiered Septemer 30, 1960, exactly 3 days
before TAGS.

TAGS fans,

My son Nolan, who is 9, is a big fan of both TAGS and
Star Wars. He has a lightsaber that, with the push of
a button, "extends" the plastic blade. He had it
strapped to his belt and said, "Look, Daddy, here's
Barney Fife as a Jedi." Then he pushed the button and
the blade extended and hit his foot. We both got a
good laugh out of it.

Hey folks,

The Mayberry Emporium website has been updated for September. We have added
a few new items.

The Mt. Airy Press from Aug. 2 with the "Andy Coming to Mt. Airy" headline,
new signed photos, a neat Eagle-eye Annie Decorative Wall Hanging are just a
few of the items. Also have more "freebies". You just have to find them!

As always, do you shopping for your Mayberry Items at Weaver's Department
Store. By supporting Weaver's you make a lot of great things possible for all
us
TAGS fans. Then, if you are still in the buying mood, come on over to the
Mayberry Emporium.

Official update from the County Clerk,
We had our annual Mayberry Night in OAkboro NC on Friday night. It was hot of
course but the entertainment kept everyone thinking COOL thoughts. We had
another sell out and believe me it was packed to the max!!!!! All the tribute
stars did a wonderful job as usual. We had Floyd, BArney, Otis, Opie, Ernest T
Bass and myself......I did forget that the Soggy Bottom Boys appeared and also
Big MAUDE!!!!!!

The band did a wonderful job playing the standards from the show. For those of
you who make it to MAyberry Days each september, I will have some of the bands
performing in the next few weeks that play in Mt Airy. On Sat Sept 4 The VW
