While preparing the weekly bulletin for my church, I was looking for a
devotional to include. This week I happened to pick up a publication our
church uses called "Open Windows." This was daily devotional for October 5,
2004:
"The Andy Griffith Show was one of the best television shows ever produced. It
promoted honesty, integrity, and kindness. It affirmed the rewards of doing
right and the consequences of doing wrong. One particular episode dealt with
the trouble caused by a spoiled child whose well-meaning father gave him
everything he wanted-including an expensive new bicycle.
The boy got into trouble defiantly riding his bicycle on the sidewalks of
Mayberry. His father eventually recognized the problem and decided to sell the
bike which his son was so proud.
In the midst of all the humor in this episode, I could not help thinking of how
often God has seen that spoiled, little boy in me and other Christians. How
often do we ignore the distinction between wants and needs? And more
importantly, how often do those wants rob us of the hope that comes from
recognizing God's faithfulness in meeting our needs?" Author Jay Stubblefield
Rocky Mount, NC
I hope I haven't broken any of the rules with this post. I just thought it was
great how TAGS touches so many people after all these years.

Had the pleasure of seeing George "Goober" Lindsey at the SC State Fair
recently. He started the act saying "Judy, Judy, Judy." You know, I could have
worn it was Cary Grant!
Anyway, the show was pretty good and Goober told some great jokes! He might
even be good enough to go on Col. Tim's Talent Time!

Does anyone know if that show mentioned by Brent that starred Charles
Ruggles is available anywhere? I always wanted him to be my grandfather
ever since I saw him in the old Hayley Mills film "ParentTrap."

Not only that, but you got Aunt Bea and John McMasters in there, too.
How about Patricia O'Neal who starred with Andy in "A Face in the
Crowd"...
Hugh Marlowe was one of those standards - kinda like Morris Ankrum - in
the 50's. If you watch enough of that genre, you'll see him and other
Mayberrians a lot.
Lotsa luck to you and yours.

The B/W sci-fi I "Dee-DUCE" Dan is talking about with Hugh Marlowe may be 1951
movie, "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Hugh played Tom Stevens, the
know-it-all boyfriend of Helen Benson (Patricia Neal). Also in the movie are
Frances Bavier as Mrs. Barley and Olan Soule as Mr. Krull. I found the DVD
movie last week at Wal-Mart for $8.88 in the bargain bin. I love the old
classics like that, especially if they haven't been colorized. My favorites
are the ones where a TAGS actor/bit actor has a role, no matter how big or
small. It always adds a Mayberry flavor. **Barn (Ron McLendon)

Below are the directions. You can only go one-way around the lake and
that's staying to the right. When you start
around the lake....stop at the first parking area and walk over toward
the wooden railing. Looking down from the road
you'll see an area of dirt....that's the area where Andy and Opie
walked. If you get past the wooden railing...you're
too far. The other side of the lake is where Howard was fishing for "ole
Sam".
The house that's on the right before you go across the dam is the game
wardens office when Andy and Helen went
fishing without a license and had to pay the fine.

2600 Franklin Canyon Drive, Beverly Hills, California
>From the West Side, head north on Beverly Drive following signs to
Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly
Drive and turn left again on Beverly Drive , at Fire Station No. 2. The
third right is Franklin Canyon Dr. continue
through residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of
Franklin Canyon and Lake Drive turn right to go to
Franklin Canyon Ranch site or turn left to go to the Sooky Goldman
Nature Center and Franklin Canyon Lake.
>From the San Fernando Valley, From the Ventura Freeway (101) or
Ventura Blvd. take Coldwater Canyon Boulevard south
to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90
degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Dr.
There is no street sign "Franklin Canyon." Road signs read "Road Closed
800 Feet" "Sunset to Sunrise"; this is the
park entrance. Do NOT make a "U-Turn" for this will bring you onto
Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay
on paved surface to reach the Sooky Goldman Nature Center and continue
south of the lake for 1.5 miles to reach the
Franklin Canyon Ranch Site area.
----------------------------
As you enter the "loop" that goes around the lake (it's one way so this
should make it easy to describe), you will have a wooden railing on the
left. That railing is where Andy stopped on "The Return to Mayberry" and
looked down at Myers Lake. There is a parking area about 40 yards down
on the left. Park there and walk over to the railing just to the left
of the parking area (not the railing that on the main road but the
wooden "fence" that keeps folks from falling down the slope. When you
look down the slope you'll see the path. This is where Andy and Opie
walked. There's a wooden picnic table down there.

That photo is from 2001 looking down from the parking area.
http://www.tagsrwc.com/ebullet/archive/graphics/california2001/myerslake_andy_opie_path2.jpg
The above photo was taken standing down at about the location that the
camera crew was set up for the opening scene shot. Now there's more
'grass/weeds' lining the path but you should be able to tell where it is.
Good luck!!!

I had read the first two chapters of Sam's Mayberry book on his web site when
he posted about it a while back.
I really liked the part about the coffee beans. I could hear Andy and Barney's
voices in my head as I read it.
Can Sam let us know when the next chapters will be coming out?
