yep one of the few chevy's seen on the show. I've seen that '59 parked
on the street in a lot of episodes, but never featured

Of Course one would have assumed that frugal Howard would have the
Biscayne - entry level on the Chevy at that time. Then the Bel Air,
followed by Top of the Line Impala (in 64) The Caprice came out in 1965
as an option on the Impala sport sedan. Then the next year the Caprice
was a series by itself. I think the Biscayne was still around until 1969
or so.

Don't know if anyone listens to "A Prarie Home Companion" on public radio, but
this past Saturday night they performed a version of "Juanita". Not a bad
rendition mind you, but nowhere as good as Barney's phone version.

What kind of car was it that Madelyn Grayson drove to Floyd's (well, you
know) that turned out to be rented? It seemed like a big fancy sedan.

All this talk about cars in Mayberry got me to thinking about something I
noticed in the "Barney's First Car" episode. Barney's car of course was a
1954 Ford Deluxe that needed some work!! At any rate, take a close look at
the hood of the wrecker that picked up Andy and Barney in the middle of the
night; the one that took the Ford back to the "Hubcap Lesh" garage! I believe
the wrecker is a GMC, but the GMC emblem on the hood, right above the grill,
has been taped over so as not to identify a non-Ford vehicle! Just something I
noticed!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks everyone for clearing up the make and year of Howard's Chevy. It
relieves my mind.
Also, I don't have a DVD player. We still have a VCR. Are they very
expensive and would it be worth my time to consider getting one just so I could
watch
some uncut TAGS shows?
We don't rent any movies and I have a pile of VCR tapes that we never watch.
I'm not much of a TV watcher unless it's TAGS or the weather report and a
little news.
Thank you in advance,
Bee in New Concord, OH

I write to make but a small correction on your comment regarding the headline
from the society page. It actually was "Oblong Man Marries Normal Woman." I
was born and raised in Oblong, Illinois and am quite familiar with this
headline, it has been confirmed as truth and not folklore.

Oblong, Illinois is a town of about 1800 people approximately 15-20 miles
from the Indiana state line, roughly triangulated between Vincennes and Terre
Haute, Indiana. It is farm country, flat plains and wooded river bottoms all
around the area. When Oblong was originally founded in the mid 1800s, it was a
country crossroads with a general mercantile store owned by Henry Peck. The
signboard above the store read "Hen. Peck Mercantile." (Photos of the actual
store confirm this as truth, not folklore) For the lack of anything better to
call this crossroads, it became known to the locals as "Henpeck." Overtme,
more people settled around the area with the growing popularity of the motorcar
and the subsequent oil boom (the first commercial oil well in the State of
Illinois is 'The Shire #1' on the outskirts of the fair town.) The residents
decided to formally incorporate as a village to gain the benefits of formal
recognition of the settlement by the State of Illinois. However, it greatly
offended
their practical midwestern sensibilities to think their beloved village would
be organized as "Henpeck, Illinois." In doing the surveying to set the legal
description for the village boundaries, the surveyors noted a naturally
occuring rectangular shaped prairie on the outskirts on the west side town.
The
founding fathers considered "Rectangle, Illinois" for only a very short time
before settling on "Oblong, Illinois."

I am sure the foregoing was way more information than many of you desire, so
I will not take further of your time to go into great details as to how Oblong
is MY Mayberry. The social interactions depicted on the show are what I grew
up with in the 1960-70s - the town sheriff, the town deputy, the town barber,
the town drunk, the town drug store, the town gas station - the slower,
friendlier, safer pace of country life.. all were mine in Oblong as a child.

If the above has piqued your interest, you may wish to visit
www.theonlyoblong.com for more information or perhaps personal confirmation
that the
above-related information is God's honest truth... cross My heart, hope to die,
poke a
needle in my eye.

Folks,

If you're looking for the "Original Hawthorne Mayberry Buildings &
Accessories," Weaver's has 'em but Ben only has one of each (he may have
two of some but mostly just one). If there's something you're
missing...head over to Weaver's and get it before it's gone. The prices
are at less that eBay prices for the items but Ben's not going his
normal *very low* price on these because...well first off it's to raise
money for next years Mayberry Days and second because he really don't
want to part with 'em.

Anyway....you'll find 'em in the "Special Items" section of
WeaversDepartmentStore.com so head on over before they're gone.

P.S. - Ben has been very thankful for those of y'all willing to purchase
the Season 1 DVDs from Weaver's even though it's costing you a little
extra to do so. Thank you very much for your loyalty to Weaver's. To
off set the extra cost...do your Christmas shopping when you order the
DVDs because remember...shipping is $5 per ORDER not per item so the
more you order the more you save.

Hopefully this was a fluke and no one else will have any problems with their
DVD's

All my discs seemed to be fine untill I got to disc 3. This one would only play
the first two episodes and
the last episode but none in between. I tried it on 3 diff players with the
same result.
Just curious if anyone else had any probs. I remember some one writing in
saying they had some
audio and video sync problems and I saw a little of that on this disc as well
in the episodes that would play.

All three other discs in the set played all the way thru with no problems at
all.

I pre-ordered mine thru amazon and sent them an email last night about it. By
the time I got home today they had already
shipped out a replacement set free of charge and said for me to make sure they
all worked before sending anything
back and also provided a free shipping label to return the bad set. Not bad
customer service at all.

Seems like this kind of thing always happens to me tho. Wonder if I'm a jinx?

I have been very impressed with the quality of the
Paramount DVD's so far. The images are very sharp and
the background scenery has been brightened. The
backgrounds were dark and shadowy in the VHS tapes for
the early seasons. In case anyone is interested in
the run times on Disc 1, they are (min:sec):

   Ep-1 25:50 Ep-2 25:48 Ep-3 25:51
   Ep-4 25:59 Ep-5 25:44 Ep-6 25:43
   Ep-7 25:46 Ep-8 25:38

   HI all,

Right on Julie Johnson!!!! We all need to support Weavers, just like
you said, it keeps the money in town and thats what keeps the town
going! Everything that comes from Weavers is excellent quality,
excellent price (they discount everything TAGS that is able to be
bought.) and they support all Mayberry functions, like our favorite,
Mayberry Days. Obviously we all can't say enough or express it
   enough,, BUY FROM WEAVERS!!

   God Bless

   Michael
