I have a solution about that Union Pacific train pulling into Mayberry. It
obviously was the Gold Train. After all, you wouldn't take the direct route
to Ft. Knox.

The other way I know it was the Gold Train was I saw Laura Lee Hobbs down
there to meet it.

As far as I know there were only two other small references to Christmas on
TAGS. One was when Emma Watson was trying to get her ten cent pills and Ellie
would not sell them to her without a prescription. Emma told her she would
not buy her cottonballs from her come next Christmas. The other was when Opie
was trying to get something for Andy for his birthday. Aunt Bee said they new
Opie wanted a toolbox last Christmas because he left out his theme for school
called "What I Would Do if I had a Toolbox."

Here's what might be an original one: There are several scenes where
someone look out or pokes a head or hand through a window in a house ("It's
ya shocks" or "...just HAD to have an apple"). As a native North
Carolinian, I can attest that window screens are necessary to keep insects
out. I've never known of anyone who kept a window open without a screen.

Lots of palms in Reno, Nevada. A great many hotels have them as well as home
owners.

You must be thinking of Las Vegas. As a long time resident, I've been in every
square mile of Reno, and there are no palms here.

I should have mentioned the now famous Coors truck, but there must be other
scenes reflecting locations that wouldn't be in NC.

I've seen The Reluctant Astronaut and it's also good. Don Knott's character
seems a lot like Barney Fife, and his family would fit in well in Mayberry. I
don't recall who exactly, but I feel certain there were actors from TAGS and
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. I also liked The Apple Dumpling Gang. When it came
to the theater, my friend and I went several times.

I don't know if yall have looked at the extending schedule for TAGS on
TV Land but it is ridiculous! They are starting over the black and
whites on Jan 26 but they are starting with EP #64, Opie's Rival.
That's the 3rd season of TAGS!! After that it does not get any better.
EP's # 74, 75 and 76 follow. What gives? What do we have to do to get
to see the first two years of TAGS on TV??

This is really stressing me out. By this rate, we will be in color EP's
by March.

>>Some of my "work habits" I could have picked up from TAGS<<

Neil, that's a good topic. I often think the same thing. Often when I get
a cup of coffee, I think of how much Andy and Barn enjoyed a cup right there
at the office. The times I am in my car for work, I am usually alone, but I
wish I had my buddy there to talk about rumor subjects, like Phoebe.

I got something for Christmas this year that reminded me of a special TAGS
moment as well. I have a den that I spend a lot of time in, sometimes even
work from there. Remember Barney dreaming about his den, when window
shopping with Thelma Lou? It doesn't smell of pipe tobacco or leather..but
I now have a dog in my den. I also have a small TV with a VCR...so here I
am in my den, with the Griffith show on, and just me and the dog...Barney's
dream. (no ladies in my den except occasionally my wife and daughter)

...a few week back, Harriet, you had a good post about mysteries never
solved. Here are a few more.

Howard's math in the episode where he buys the Barbershop--You may recall
that he was going to raise Floyd's rent from $50 to $65 a month, and claimed
that he would only make 5%..which is $3.25 according to the machines down at
the bank. Then in the end he comes down $7.50...which means he would lose
$4.25 per month. I guess he was going to make it up by charging a nickel a
piece for every checker game in the shop???

We never find out why exactly Helen is sitting on the same side of the booth
with Frank (of blamed grading manual fame). Andy and Helen make up after
their fight, but she never explains this awkward situation with the
know-it-all board member from Raleigh.

When does Sarah sleep? She seems to be on duty 24 hours a day.

Throughout TAGS, the 'location' of Mayberry changes from time to time: COORS
trucks (only out west then), a map of Montana behind the sheriff's desk in a
few episodes, etc. However, it is clear Mayberry was based on Mt. Airy, NC.
and slowly but surely Mayberry became an NC town (look at all the times
Raleigh is referred to and even visited on short day trips).

I would have thought the same thing, but Andy once said in an interview
that one of the writers came up with the name "Mayberry". But it seems
mighty suspicious to me that this "writer" came up with the exact name
of the town where Andy's mother was from. Curious, curious. On the
other hand, Andy also said in another interview that actors have to
"lie a little".

showing the 3rd RFD episode "Mike's Losing Streak." Andy appeared in it and
was still the Sheriff. I thought that He, Opie and Helen all moved out of
Mayberry after the pilot episode of RFD. Can anyone help me out here?
Thanks.
>>>

Andy Taylor was seen (briefly) in three early episodes of Mayberry RFD, then
after that he just sort of faded away without comment. He and Helen later
re-appeared in one more episode, when they brought Andy Taylor Jr. home for
his christening ceremony, but other than that Sheriff Taylor was barely
mentioned in any other episodes. There was no sheriff in Mayberry after
Andy left (no actor could have filled those shoes), but Goober retained his
old job of temporary deputy.

>>> I have never seen The Reluctant Astronaut either. How bout a review on
it from someone?

It's my favorite of all of Don's films, but I might be a little partial
because his character is from my home state, Missouri. The film was written
by TAGS writers Fritzell and Greenbaum, and several Mayberry actors appear
in it, including Jesse White, Burt Mustin, and Paul Hartman. Leslie Nielsen
also plays a major role (he was not known as a comic actor in those days).

For those who haven't seen it, Don plays a mild-mannered character named Roy
Fleming who operates a kiddy space ride at a carnival. His father, a pushy
WWI veteran who has always been upset at his son's apparent lack of
ambition, signs him up for astronuat training at NASA. Roy arrives in
Houston only to find that he hasn't been enrolled in the space program at
all -- he's been assigned as a janitor. He's too embarrassed to reveal this
to his dad, so he lets his family think he's training to be an astronaut,
figuring they'll never know the difference. I won't spoil the rest of the
plot, but anyway, IMO it's a great film.

Hey Everyone,

Did anyone hear that Ron Howard may direct the movie
adaptation of "The Da vinci Code?" This book is a
book of fiction which makes preposterous claims about
Christ, is filled with historical anachronisms, and
makes other faulty claims based on a misconception of
Biblical evidences and texts. In plain words, this
book is a sham. Why would Ron Howard choose to direct
a film such as this? I wonder how Andy would feel--he
is a devout Christian and must feel somewhat
uncomfortable at this possible film venture by Howard.
 Is Ron Howard a Christian?

Thanks again, God bless.

Richard.

Funny thing about the Private Eyes movie - when I was a kid this was a
favorite of mine. I would watch it over and over on TBS. I guess the silly
humor probably appealed to children. I wouldn't mind seeing it again for
kicks. Maybe I'll check it out from the local movie rental place!

copies. I really liked that show and never seem to beable to catch it on
TV. Thank you for you help. Sincerely, Steve Schani
