There have been lots of requests for the Andy Griffith Interview on CBS this
morning.

I have the tape, but not the facilities to make copies, but I would be
willing to send it to someone at my expense who has the ability to make
copies for those who want it.

I just bought The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Apple
Dumpling Gang Rides Again, How to Train a Fig, The Reluctant Astronaut, The
Ghost and Mr. Chicken, and The Shakiest Gun in the West, in DVD. I am trying
to
get all the Don Knotts movies. If there are others anyone would recommend, I
would appreciate knowing so I can order them. I also have No Time for
Sergeants.

There are several things with TAGS that don't seem to reflect North Carolina or
the South, in general. Besides the ones already mentioned, I'll bet a botanist
could prove that the trees and other foliage around Myer's Lake might not exist
in NC. Also, the obvious lack of rain, snow, and cold weather are a dead
giveaway. My dad said the outdoor sets they used for M*A*S*H didn't look
anything like what he saw in Korea. But S. California does have a lot of
diverse landscape and foliage, so it is a good place to make movies. So many
of the characters that live in and visit Mayberry were obvious "Northern
folks", though they seem to have invaded our beloved South over the past 30
years....carpetbaggers! Then again, it's a free country. As long as they
follow the creed "When in Rome, do as the Romans", and don't make waves, and
enjoy our delicacies like possum pie and crawfish, I guess they're okay and
welcome.

As far as Ron Howard directing this upcoming controversial movie (DaVinci
Code), I noticed recently that he and his film partner (the guy with the funny
hair) were both at a shindig for....ugh, Hillary (not the sweet Hillary Duff,
but the "other" Hillary). I saw a clip of Ron & his film partner saying how
they both would welcome a Hillary presidency.....Say it ain't so, Opie! I
guess the socialist Hollywood influence has gotten to him, overriding his
Oklahoma early upbringing. He's still a great director, no matter what, and
seems to be a decent man and father. He backed out of the controversial
upcoming film about the Alamo. There will be a lot of us upset natives here if
that picture (Alamo) decides to use a revisionist history of our beloved Alamo.
Just don't watch the film if it doesn't appeal to you. That's what works for
me. That new Mel Gibson movie about Christ's final hours is fixin' to rustle
some feathers of the other side, so turnabout is fair play, I gue!

My personal favorite is the Ghost and Mr. Chicken also, but I also loved "The
Incredible Mr. Limpet"...check it out.

Keep smiling, fellow Mayberrians, you're making me feel downright good.

Subject: Howard's Barbershop Investment
Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2004 08:58:09 -0600

As for the mystery surrounding Howard's return on his purchase of Floyd's
Barbershop building, I know there was a discussion on this from several
years ago, and while I'm not a CPA, I do think I have a very plausible
theory on the investment.

I haven't seen the episode for a couple of years, and I don't recall if
Howard's purchase price was ever mentioned. If it was, I'm all wet, but if
not, I'm assuming that the price wouldn't have been more than about $12,000.
Assuming that Howard had a nice little nest egg saved up (after all, I'm
sure Mother Sprague never charged him rent or board), he probably paid cash.
I remember the realtor mentioning that real estate taxes had gone up and
that was why Howard would need to charge more rent, so Howard was apparently
going to pay the taxes (although that is always negotiable in a commercial
lease) and let's say that Floyd was responsible for all other operating
expenses (insurance, maintenance and utilities--again it's not unreasonable
that a commercial tenant would pay these costs).

Next, we need to plug in a tax rate. If the real estate taxes for the
building at that time were $180 per year and Howard had no other operating
expenses, a $65 monthly rent would result in a 5% return, as Howard's net
after paying taxes would have been $50 per month. If he paid $12,000 for
the building and had a net income of $600 per year, that would equal a 5%
return. Of course, if the building appreciated in value, Howard's return
would be less--maybe he had an inflation clause in Floyd's lease that we
never heard about.

In any event, but agreeing to $57.50 per month rent, that reduced Howard's
return to 4.25%. Not as good as 5%, but still a nice stable return for
someone who was probably a conservative investor.

Now if there were other facts mentioned in the episode that I forgot, then I
guess this is off (Luther: What'd you say Andy? Andy: It was OFF
Luther!...)

>>>As far as I know there were only two other small references to Christmas
on TAGS.

As previously mentioned, there was just the one TAGS Christmas episode (in
season one -- 1960) but there are several Christmas references in other
episodes, including:

Alcohol and Old Lace: the Morrisons list a whole string of holidays

The Return of Malcolm Merriweather: when Barney continuously rings the
dinner bell, Andy tells him he's not Santy Claus on the street corner

Family Visit: Aunt Bee asks Nora to come back for "The Holidays" and stay
for a whole week

Fun Girls: Barney tells Andy he had planned to knit him an afghan as a
Christmas gift

The Big House: Barney and Gomer pick up the Christmas decorations on the
courthouse roof

Opie's Fortune: Opie compares finding $50 to having an "extra Christmas"

Taylors in Hollywood: Aunt Bee thinks the movie about Andy should have
mentioned that he delivers Christmas baskets

...and as Ken mentioned, Emma telling Ellie she won't be buying cotton balls
from Walker's next Christmas, and Opie leaving his essay on the table as a
hint that he wanted a toolbox for Christmas. There might be a couple more
as well.

Correction: yesterday I said that Andy was in three early episodes of
Mayberry RFD, but I just remembered there were four:

Andy and Helen Get Married
Help on the Farm
Youth Takes Over
Mike's Losing Streak

... and the first episode of season 2, "Andy's Baby." After that, we never
saw Andy and Helen Taylor again until "Return to Mayberry" (we never saw
Andy Jr. again, period.)

Subject: Re: MAyberry being in NC

There are several not hints, but out right statements indicating Mayberry is in
NC in the show....On the deserted island, the little boy asks Howard where he
comes from and Howard says "Mayberry, North Carolina." Also, in the Hollywood
episode, I think they say they are from North Carolina when talking to the man
on the bus. Many times Raleigh is referred to as the State Capital. (Esquire
Club for example) As we say in the law, therefore, it would be a "reasonable
assumption" that Mayberry is in North Carolina since NC is the only state with
a capital called Raleigh..Also, in the episode where Opie is talking about
college, Opie says he wants to go to a state university, the University of NC,
to save on the cost........

On another note, there are actually some palm trees in NC, but they are likely
transplanted trees, not "local trees" or native trees. We do this in SC also.
Of course, the majority are found near the coast.....

Finally, on my list of "Mayberry habits" at work, I left out that the auto
repair shop is walking distance from Town Hall, so when I need service I
usually just drop the car off there and walk on to work. Then I walk back over
and pick it up in the afternoon. There is a "pop" machine outside the garage
too....

Subject: Ron /Reluctant Astronaut/ prayer
From: Glenn D Eldridge <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

> Is Ron Howard a Christian?

I have no idea if Ron is a Christian or not. I know of one of the movies
he has made, uses the Lord's name in vain many times. (I have only seen
one of them.) I don't see how anyone could be a Christian and think that
is ok. I hope that Andy has had some influence on him. Does anyone know
if Don is a Christian?

I have also seen The Reluctant Astronaut. It is very good! Don is
hilarious in it. I remember a long time ago my mom always talking about
this movie that she wanted to see again called The Ghost and Mr. Chickin
(oops! I mean Chicken! =) I always forget that rule! ) I had never
heard of it. We could never find it anywhere at the rental places.
Finally it came on tv and I loved it!

I have a request. I know this has nothing to do with Mayberry, but, here
goes...The youth pastor at our church recently found out that he has
cancer. It's very, very serious. They told him that he could take the
treatment with no guarantee or go home and live for maybe 30 days. He
took the treatment, but recieved bad news yesterday. Something about a
blood test. They are saying that it is going to take a big miracle for
him to survive. That is what our church is desprately begging God for.
I am asking you to please say a prayer for him and also for his family.
He is only 28 and has a wife and two children under the age of three. It
has been a huge blow to them and to our church. I said this has nothing
to do with Mayberry, but maybe in a way it does. We all love this
fictional town and it's people because they help each other out in time
of need. Even strangers who are just passing through and who aren't very
friendly. I'm asking those who will, to be "Mayberryish" and help out
this "stranger" by praying for him. Thank so much!

Amy
