Subject: Mayberry on Batman
From: Ralph A Baker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I finally noticed on TV Land last night during a Batman episode that the
Mayberry back lot was used as the streets of Gotham City, does anyone
know in how many episodes this occurred? I know that this back lot was
also used for Gomer Pyle, Star Trek, Hogan's Heroes, and the Real McCoys,
as well as a number of movies. Has anyone ever compiled an exhaustive
list of these Mayberry sightings? Are there other shows I should be
watching to see the set? I get a real kick out of it--the ubiquitous
town of Mayberry!

I taped most of the Matlock episodes and there are a lot of those little
references to Mayberry. In one episode where Don Knotts is Ben's new neighbor,
at the very end they are sitting near the fireplace and reminiscing about the
old days, it's very poignant and although I don't remember the conversation
right now, it did bring a tear to my eye at the time. Several of the TAGS
regulars were on Matlock: Barney, Thelma Lou, Helen, Amzie Strickland, Everett
Greenbaum to name a few. A comment on the TAGS color episodes: I am one of
those that likes them so it doesn't bother me when they come on. Used to be
they hardly ever showed them so it's kinda neat to see Mayberry AB (after
Barney).
I also have a prayer request. I'm in the Army Reserve as is my husband. He is
over in Kuwait right now, on his way to Iraq and I also have a son getting
ready to go there. We also have a son in the Navy. Please pray for our troops
regularly. Not only are they facing imminent danger, but also the stress of
being away from their families and dealing with all the issues that go along
with that.
Thank you--we appreciate it!

Hi ya'll! I have a about five tapes of episodes of TAGS but there all are
the same episodes. The only ones I can find on tape or DVD are ones like
"A wife for Andy", "The Great Filling Station Robbery", "The Big House", "A
Car for Barney", etc. Is there anywhere that I can get every TAGS episode
ever made on DVD. I think that I would pay any price to have every episode
ever. Thanks ya'll! God bless---Jessi Vest (aka Charlene Darling because
I am a little back-woods girl who will forever be chasing after Andy!)

NORTH CAROLINA!!
May the best team win...who am I kidding...GO PANTHERS!!!

Greetings Mike from the "land of rhythm and pleasure"...NORTH Carolina!!!

>>>Also, which episode features the leg of lamb where Otis says, "All some
women understand is a leg of lamb." Could someone correct the above quote
and put it in context?
>>>

That hilarious, albeit politically incorrect, scene is in "Ellie for
Council." Here's the scene:

Andy is at his desk writing a letter of apology to Ellie, and Otis is locked
in his cell (I'm doing all this from memory; I may have a couple of words
wrong here and there):

Andy: How's this sound to you, Otis? (reads note aloud) "Dear Ellie, I am
sorry about yesterday. I would never intentionally insult you or any other
woman. Your friend and admirer of women everywhere, Andy Taylor."

Otis: No, Andy! No, no, no! I say, [when] you got a argument with a woman,
stand up and fight it out!

Andy: Fightin' it out's what put you behind them bars, Otis.

Otis: But she threw a dish at me!

Andy: You swung a leg of lamb at HER.

Otis: But I missed her.

Andy: Yeah, but you hit her mother!

Otis: (great big smile) Yeah, right in the mouth!

(Barney enters)

Barney: Oh, hi Otis. Say, I just seen your mother-in-law comin' out of the
dentist's.

A bit later, Andy suggests to the menfolk in town that they cut off all of
their wives' charge accounts all over town. Otis agrees, saying "this'll
hurt her more than a leg of lamb across the mouth." Later still, when Ellie
gets mad at Andy all over again, Andy (not Otis) says "Otis was right: All
they understand is a leg o' lamb."

Your friend and admirer of women everywhere,
Paul

"A whole season of TAGS could fit on 2 cd's, and they
only want to put
12
episodes on 2 CD's?"

My guess? Marketing. I've signed up to buy Carol
Burnette shows, 2 a CD, for, I think, the rest of my
life and at a cost near to but, I hope, less than the
national debt. :)

I thought it would be fun to look at guest stars on the Andy Griffith Show
who played very different characters in their various appearances.

There are some Actors who were always crooks, such as the guy involved in
the Bank Robbery who was also the fake FBI guy that duped Barney into
leading him to the stolen money with tales of the McAllister Case, the fake
FBI handshake and knock-out drops.
But there were some such a Reta Shaw...who played Barneys Voice Teacher
Elinor Poultice,...and Big Maude Henderson the escaped convict.
Another lady Con, Jean Carson, was also one of the Fun Girls,
Allan Melvin was usually a bag guy, but also played the upright Army
recruiter
Bob McQuain was literally a good cop (state police) and one of the Gordon
Boys (Ike).
Jay Novello was a pick-pocket guest of honor, and also a lawyer..though not
that upright (Sued the County)

Who else can you think of that played very different roles???

The Untrained Voice (sometimes nice sometime annoying, always a fan of
TAGS)

"I saw a Matlock once where Andy, excuse me, Ben was interrogating someone on
the witness stand and somehow he worked in something like the following: "Back
where I come from we used to have a saying, 'If I had seen you coming I know
what I'd do. I'd have raised both arms and wove at you.'" I believe that was
once said by Ernest T. "

Ben did say that on Matlock and Ernest T. did originally say it on TAGS. I
believe it was in the episode "Ernest T Bass Joins the Army". If you watch
Matlock closely and have a knowledge of TAGS, you will note that there are many
references to TAGS in Matlock. I call them "inside jokes" for TAGS fans. That
quote is one, as is the mention of "kleptomenerac". I can't remember any
others right now, but I believe there are more. And Ben often plays songs on
his guitar on Matlock that were also from TAGS.

"Also, which episode features the leg of lamb where Otis says, "All some women
understand is a leg of lamb." Could someone correct the above quote and put it
in context? I think it is from the episode where Ellie runs for town council.

It is from the episode "Ellie for Council". After Andy makes Ellie mad by
calling her idea that a woman run for council "silly", he types a note of
apology and reads it to Otis. After Andy reads the apology note to Otis, Otis
tells Andy that he should never apologize to a woman. Andy reminds him that
that is why he (Otis) is in jail. Otis happens to be in jail that day, not for
drinking, but for fighting with his wife. His wife threw a dish at him and he
swung a leg of lamb (Andy's favorite dish) back at her. He missed her, but he
hit her mother right in the mouth with it. Later Barney mentions that he saw
Otis' mother in law coming out of the dentist's office. I don't think Otis says
"all they understand is a leg of lamb." Andy says it in the drugstore when he
goes over to talk to Ellie and Ellie tells him she is running for council. He
is not in favor of the idea, and he and Eliie have an argument. Ellie goes
into the back room, and Andy says "Otis is right. All!
they understand is a leg of lamb."
