I believe he was the manager or night watchman at the Mayberry Hotel. When he
got upset over the Darlings not paying full price at the hotel, he broke out in
hives.

John Masters was the reservations clerk at the Mayberry Hotel. We learned
that the night he got hives from dealing with the Darlings.

If you remember the first time the Darling Family came to town, Howard Masters
was working at the desk of the Mayberry Hotel.
He got so nervous trying to catch the Darling's sneak into the room that he
got the "hives."

was talking to catching "Old Sam." Didn't mean to call John Masters
"Howard."

<<<<< And speaking of Andy's boat - most of us know the boat's
name but of those who consider themselves novice noticers - can you give the
nicknames of the following angler items? >>>>>
Let's
see.....his boat was Gertrude, his prize fishin' rod was Eagle-Eye Annie, and
the fish was a sliver carp named Old Sam.
**Barn

>>>This may be stretching the issue a bit, but didn't Barney once sing a
line from a famous song that went "It's quarter to one" or something to that
effect?

The song is "One For My Baby," in the episode "Andy and the Woman Speeder"
(Barney is attempting to impersonate Frank Sinatra). The first line is
"It's quarter to three, no one in the place except you and me."

>>>Ever wonder what John Masters does for a living? Surely running the
Mayberry Choir don't pay that much.

Don't forget, he also works the desk at the Mayberry Hotel (see "The
Darlings Are Coming.")

>>>I know from reading various articles that Andy Griffith has two children,
a son and daughter....Can anyone bring us up to date on them? How old?
What they do? Etc, etc, etc.... And does he have grandkids?

Andy and his first wife, Barbara, adopted a boy, Sam, and a girl, Dixie.
Sam died a few years ago in unfortunate circumstances, but I don't know
anything about Dixie. I don't think Andy has any grandchildren; seems to me
he would have mentioned them at some point.

I'm sitting here about in N.C. about an hour and a half south of Mt. Airy
watching my
yard get snow covered. I just read several site comments about Andy's smoking
on the show and they reminded me of an interview I saw with him several years
ago in conjunction with his appearance on The Grand Ol' Opry. The interviewer
asked him what his biggest regret about the show was and he said something to
the effect "I wish I had never smoked on the show" I don't remember him
elaborating as to why, but you've got to assume the in that 20/20 hindsight he
might have worried about the message it sent to old and young viewers!

Greetings from the land of rhythm and pleasure (and snow)!

Regarding nickels:

Opie asks for a nickel for milk....(Opie and the Bully)

Andy pulls the "buffalo pointing the wrong way" trick on Barney
(In the episode where Mr. Maxwell sells the folk song album)

I think Johnny Paul and Howie paid a nickel to see Barney "hanging himself" in
the closet (OR was it another coin? )

Those are the ones that come to mind right off....

I always thought John Masters ran the hotel (specifically, in the episode
where the Darlings stay there). He just ran the choir as a volunteer, and as a
man who loved music like no one else in Mayberry. :-) (Well, maybe except
Andy.)

In one of Andy Griffith's interviews he is said to have regretted every
cigarette that he smoked, especially those he smoked on camera. I love how
Barney always gags when he takes a drag on cigarettes and cigars, and even
indian peace pipes. Sometimes he carries a lighter in his pocket (Loaded
Goat). Sometimes he has to dash for a match (Lady Prisoner).

I am glad to hear that the Dillards are still receiving royalties. They
didn't have much to say on the shows, but oooooh, those songs!!!!!!!!!!!! I
loved listening to Rodney's stories at Mayberry Days.

In regards to Andy Griffith's children, I found conflicting information on the
number of children and the number of marriages. No information could be found
about grandkids, which doesn't necessarily mean there are not any, either.

Wish I could be of more help. (FYI: Cindi, his wife, is in her mid-40s, I
believe.)

The Internet Movie Data Base www.imdb.com lists two children & three
marriages:

Andy & Dixie, adopted during his marriage to Barbara Edwards.

Spouses:

Cindi Knight (1983 - present)

Solica Cassuto (1973 - 1981)

Barbara Edwards (1949 - 1972)

E! online lists three children & two marriages:

Son: Andrew Samuel Griffith Jr. (aka Sam Griffith), real-estate developer;
born 1957; died (of alcoholism....according to imdb) January 17, 1996.

Daughter: Dixie Griffith

Daughter: Nan Griffith

Spouses:

Barbara Edwards

I believe John Masters made his living by managing the Mayberry Hotel. When
the Darling family came to town to pick up Dud Wash, Briscoe rented a room at
the hotel and it was John Masters who signed him in. Apparently Briscoe
checked in the hotel during evening hours when John was working so that would
leave John free to practice with the choir in the daytime.

I think John Masters was the music teacher at school, the choir leader
(which we already know) and he probably gave some piano lessons or other
instrument lessons privately. I know Miss Crump was a super duper teacher,
but she certainly couldn't do everything. So I think Mr. Masters taught
music. I hope he never had Ernest T. in his class! He'd probably have real
trouble with that!! :)

I remember when Andy tricked Barney into thinking that he had a rare and
valuable nickel with the buffalo pointing the wrong way. I think that
Barney offered him $75 dollars for it and then Barney found out he was
teasing him and got mad at him.

In reference to the times Andy smoked, Mr. Sizemore made the reference
to the episode of Virgil.
Virgil was not making a new set of keys, he took the pins out of the
hinges to the cell doors in order to get Otis out. Remember, earlier he
was given the task of cleaning the keys up, but sanded them too far down
where they wouldn't catch the tumblers to the lock.
