re: Aunt Bee washes a plate and sets it in the sink rack. Andy wipes the
plates off - WITHOUT
RINSING THEM!!! YIKES!

The same thing happened to me when I moved to Arkansas 24 years ago. (I'm a
danged Yankee) My mother in law washed dishes like that and I was so
shocked!! She had always done it that way. I couldn't tho', I rinsed them
off and eventually she followed suit. I found out that you understand a lot
of things better on TAGS if you live in the rural south for a while. Most of
that stuff just went right over my head or puzzled me until I lived here
several years.

Someone who was associated with TAGS is bound to know Mr. Schwump's real
identity. There has to be a record of him, either at the Screen Actor's Guild,
or with the production team at TAGS. I say the board should issue a prize for
anyone who finds out who he was. Like a free trip to one of the Mayberry
events, or at least some free merchandise at Weaver's. Mr. Schwump could very
well be alive right now, maybe in a Hollywood retirement home, though the
chances are that he has passed on. He was probably in his early 50's during
the b&w days......But maybe this is one puzzle that's not meant to be solved.

I think Mr. Schwump is not from around here. I would say he is from
someplace else, a foreigner, maybe from Canada. That is why he never speaks.
He
doesn't want to give away his accent. I think he is spying on Mayberry to find
out how they make their johnnycake. Or he could be an undercover agent for the
FBI or a T man in disguise, or he could really be Andy's number three man
doing undercover work.
These are just theories mind you.

>>>How many TAGS episodes was Warren in? Did they fire him or did everyone
just figure out that nobody could replace Barney?

Jack Burns appeared as Deputy Warren Ferguson in 11 episodes, all from
season number six (the first color season). Despite Jack's fine acting
skills, the character of Warren never caught on. In my opinion this was
because the writers kept writing stories that would have been perfect with
Barney, but there's only one actor who could fill those shoes. So, about
halfway through the sixth season, Warren just sort of disappeared from
Mayberry, and from that point on Andy didn't have a permanent deputy (Goober
still filled in during emergencies).

I sent an email to the late Earl Bellamy last year asking if he had any ideas
about tracking down the identity of the actor who played Mr. Schwump. He
directed at least one episode with Mr. Schwump. He said that he talked to (I
believe) Jim Clark who referred to the question as the "Holy Grail" of Mayberry
trivia. I thought that was a proper description of the issue.

Mr. Schwump lives in the mind of TAGS friends. No outsider or first time
visitor to our town would ever see him. Kind of like Jimmy Stewart's
'Harvey'. Just a pleasant thought and memory to be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Did he get the rug from Weaver's or was it imported (from Raleigh!)?

One of our fellow Mayberrians is going through a very hard time. I want to
respect their privacy and won't disclose names, but please be in prayer for
one of our own. God knows who it is. Thank you in advance for doing this
for them.

Thankful to be in your group,

Has anybody ever asked Andy Griffith or Don Knotts if they know who Mr.
Schwamp is? Does someone want to keep this a mystery or is it a fact that
nobody
knows? It would seem to me that Andy would know for sure since he had so much
to do with the writing and charactors. Of course, I wouldn't know how to
contact Andy or Don about this.
Just wondering.....again.

Dear Untrained,
Thanks for the info! You know your education was
worth every penny. I'm sure the Learn a Month magazine
had an article on Hymn book cover repair but I must
have missed that issue.
