Thanks so much for the instructions for adding Mayberry to my computer. I
now sign on with TAGS theme song. Buddy sign ons are announced by Ernest T
saying "It's me, it's me, Ernest T" and leave with Floyd announcing that
"Everything is ok in Mayberry". I'm still working on more additions. Any
suggestions?
Thanks again.

Here's another good one from Calvin Coolidge:

Any of you who enjoy football have probably heard of Red Grange, who was a
star at the University of Illinois (although he lost to Nebraska in one of
his college games!), and then played for Coach George Halas and the Chicago
Bears.

The Bears were traveling through Washington, DC on a road trip and Coach
Halas was invited by a friend to meet President Coolidge at the White House.
The friend, who worked at the White House, introduced them. "Mr. President,
I'd like you to meet George Halas and Red Grange with the Chicago Bears."
President Coolidge replied, "It's nice to meet you--I have always enjoyed
circus acts."

Floyd: That's interesting...I didn't know that...
Andy: What's that, Floyd?
Floyd: Did you know the dingo dog is indigenous to Australia?

Hi,

Watched TV Land last night, and it was great! I had never seen the
Danny Thomas Show that introduced 'Andy Taylor and Mayberry"
to TV watchers. Thrilled to see it....

Sure different though, after becoming so use to the Mayberry we
have grown to love. The courthouse exterior very different, as was
the jail and it's contents ( which were pared down for the series),
seeing Aunt Bea as married "Harriet", and hearing Andy send Opie
home to Aunt Lucy....

Even with the changes, it was a real treat to watch!

Calvin Coolidge is the reported source of one of my all-time favorite quotes:

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not;
nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not;
unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is
full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent. The slogan "Press on" has solved and always will solve the
problems of the human race.

For someone who didn't say much, he sure said a lot.

Recently my wife and I had to make a trip north to Virginia to help her
parents settle into their retirement community.

When we got to North Carolina I saw the sign for Mt. Airy but my wife said
we had to turn before we got there. What I didn't know is that she planned
for us to go to "Mt. Pilot" (Pilot Mountain) first before going to
"Mayberry" (Mt. Airy).

We spent some time in Pilot Mt Park and then headed over to Mt. Airy to stay
at the Mayberry Inn. (I was a little disappointed that the morning clerk was
no John Masters.)

After breakfast we headed over to "Floyd's" for my haircut, followed that up
with visiting local stores, the Visitor's Center, Wally's, the Police
Station, and topped it off with a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch.

A wonderful surprise and it was a fun day!

If you are of a mind, you can see photos from the trip at

I can't find another person who remembers a commercial from around 25 years ago
that played funny scenes from the show while someone sang a jingle about Andy
and Barney.
The jingle went something like this:
    Andy & Barney were lawmen
    bravest you ever did see.
Warned ever crook in the record book
    to stay out of Mayberry.
    They were the law.......
I know the rest of it but I'll start with this in hope of finding someone else
remembers it and helps me to know that I ain't crazy.

I believe Floyd quoted Calvin Coolidge as saying, "I choose not to run." Is
that correct?

These wonderful quotes got me to thinking about whether other presidents were
mentioned on TAGS. Possibly George Washington on the episode where Andy tells
the boys about the American Revolution. Then I began to wonder how many other
famous people were mentioned on TAGS. I can think of Paul Revere, Rock Hudson
and of course Mark Twain. Anyone else?

>Andy had asked Jerry (character name) to walk to the school crossing to
>help the children cross when school let out.

The best part of this episode is this scene - When Andy tells him ("You're
not Roby Miller's boy?") to go man the school crossing he says to go to the
corner of Haymore and Rockford. Don't you just love it? - that's the cross
streets where Andy grew up in Mt. Airy. It swonderful, it smarvelous how he
incorporated the real world with Mayberry!!!!!!

Harriet, I'm naming my chickens after streets in Mayberry...

...."I already 10-4'd ya!"......."Feels good to get it in first.".......

Calvin Coolidge said all that? I thought he just said "I do not choose to
run". (I heard that from Floyd). ;)

Hey I just watched "The Case of the Punch in the Nose" and I just realized
that Barney's persistence in bringing out this case that was never closed
probably spawned the popular new show "Cold Cases"

Its just amazing how many things got their roots in Mayberry. We know that
"the Bachelor" was inspired by Barney's actions as well.

What's Next for Barney-Inspired or Mayberry-Inspired TV shows?

Law and Order--Moonshiners & Litterbugs
CSI--Mayberry (Fingerprints and Moulages)
Mayberry Idol--(everyone has to sing Acapella)
The West Cell
Everybody Loves Barney
Deputy Fear Factor (featuring bright lamps, ink blot tests, and flying

I'm still working on "The Understudy" (a reality show starring Mr. Schwamp)

Thanks for all the contributions on lady drivers. That was a fun topic!
