I spotted our Malcom Merriwether on an episode of "Last of The Summer Wine".
A mid-seventies British-ter sitcom. It is set in the Irish countryside about
three retired gentlemen and their life after working days and child-rearing.

I don't remember Malcom's role or screen name, but it was unmistakably our
man "from somewhere's else"!

Is there anyone among us in our e-community that knows anything about the
making of pickles and types? The reason I ask is, that in "The Pickle Story"
(ep. 43), Clara shares with us that this year she went wild with allspice, and
I was wondering if allspice was something commonly used in Dill pickles.

It would seem to me--though I know literally nothing about pickles--that
allspice would be an ingredient used in Bread & Butter pickles, or maybe
Gerkins, but not Dills. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't allspice a
combination of dessert spices...nutmeg and such as this? I haven't ever seen a
full Bread & Butter pickle, only spears and chips, so since Clara's pickles
(and everyone elses) were whole, would they have been Dills or Sours? If so,
then would allspice have been a logical ingredient.

I have been sitting under my bucket way too long! But I am genuinely curious.

Franklin

Bee-double! That cracked me up. :-)

I just have to say once again how much I love the color episodes (not overall,
but I must obey all rules!) when Aunt Bee takes center stage. Whether it's
learning to drive, doing a TV show, botching a commercial, going to Mexico,
winning prizes on TV, donning a blonde wig, or flying an airplane, I think it
was just GREAT to show her breaking out and living life like that. An
inspiration to us all! :-)

My daughter (five years old) was putting on a magic show for me the other day.
When waving the wand over the hat before pulling out a rabbit, she repeated the
phrase "Winkin Blinkin Nodamus Rex..." I about fell out of the chair
laughing....

>I read online that there is going to be a county fair in Mt. Airy during
>Mayberry Days. Does anyone else know about this?

Gloria, that is the Surry County Agricultural Fair at Veteran's Park in Mount
Airy (just down from the bowling alley). It is held September 19-25 and
coincides with Mayberry Days this year (Sept. 23-26). It is a separate event,
but open to anyone.

Another Mount Airy festival that is coming up in just a few weeks is the
Mayberry Farm Fest. Below is the press release (written by WBMUTBB member Ann
Vaughn!):

Take a step back in time and join us for our first Mayberry Farm Fest to be
held in Downtown Mount Airy on Saturday and Sunday, May 22nd and 23rd. Hours
are 9 6 on Saturday and 12 6 Sunday.

The Downtown Business Association will be sponsoring this exclusive event to
showcase heritage crafters and to spotlight the rich farm heritage that this
area is known for. In addition to an antique tractor and equipment show,
heritage crafters will be on hand to demonstrate their talents and to show and
sell their wares. In our own local version of the Antiques Road Show, we
invite you to bring your valuables to be assessed by regional antique and
collectible appraisers. Live music will be featured in the parking area
adjacent to Workforce Carolina. With an area designated for children, this
event has something for everyone young and young at heart! For those who love
petting zoos, there will even be a special spot designated for live farm
animals! Our Main Street from Independence Boulevard to Pine Street in our

Food will be provided by local non-profit organizations. Come join the fun a
nd catch a glimpse of a simpler day and time in the town that is the closest

Hmmm....maybe we should invite Ms. Couric to be a special "VIP" guest at
Mayberry Days this year. She might just come!
