I think we've heard Billy Bob Thornton, Bernie Mac, "Focus on the Family"
head James Dobson and former political advisor to President Clinton, James
Carville. Former "Saturday Night Live" regular David Spade also once
acknowledged
that one of his influences was watching Don Knotts play Barney Fife. Another
one that comes to mind is the late syndicated newspaper columnist, Lewis
Grizzard.

Regarding the question about whether there are books on mountain
folklore: A good series on the subject is the "Foxfire" series, written
by high school students some years back in north Georgia. They
interviewed many of the older folks in the area to preserve the history
and knowledge of mountain culture since it was obvious by the 1970's that
modern life was erasing the skills and folklore of our grandparents.

Isn't there a state highway 45 that comes through somewhere around Mayberry?
We could rename that Barney Fife Boulevard.

Since the truckers need that extra speed (probably 45 MPH) to get over
Turner's Grade, we could rename it Fife Mountain.

I'm in full agreement that a new Colt 45 with 45 bullets is not a good idea.
I've still got a hole in the floorboard of my truck from that Saturday me
and Barney went to that Sheriff's auction in Mt. Pilot. Ever since he got
the Count's box that time, he really does like to go to those things.

I grew up (ouch - I hate to think how long ago it was) in the mountains of
Western North Carolina. (We even played Mt. Airy in football in the playoffs
once) Anyway, the series known as the Foxfire Books has some "remedies" such as
requested in the email from Kelly Adamson. I do not recall any as unusual as
the "divorce proceedings" or putting a "buckeye in your pocket and doing the
incant for a sore foot," but there are some pretty good ones. I remember my
grandfather reading them and I laughed at a lot of the remedies. They are
exceptional books as I recall. (You mean the proceedins is in the ground?)

There is a great series of books that have been published since the 1960s call
the "Foxfire" books that were originally compiled by Eliot Wigginton and his
students in Rabun, Georgia. These books cover literally every aspect of
mountain and folk life and are absolutely fascinating! I'm not sure which
volume is out now, but I've got up to volume 8.

There are other Moonshine Capitals of the World. North Wilkesboro, NC (not
too far from Mt. Airy) is also known as "the" Moonshine Capital of the
World, as is Newport, TN and Dawsonville, GA. I assume there are
more. All are probably within a day drive (or couple day cow ride) from
Mayberry.

I'm somewhat ashamed that, not that I'm in Kentucky, I don't know what our
Moonshine Capital of the World is. Maybe someone here can enlighten me.

Click here: Ask Jeeves Results You can go to this site and there are a host
of books on mountain folk lore. Some sound pretty good. I might check out some
myself. I'm also trying to find out who played Mr.Schwump. Found a very long
list of people on the show, it had about everyone except Mr. Schwump. If I
ever get to one of the events where former cast members are I'll ask them.

Go to Amazon to find books on mountain folklore. Just click in "Mountain

Carolina Mountain Folklore. Happy hunting.

Surely there are somewhere, but what most of you probably never realized is
that the book Barney reads in that eipsode is a real book! Fritzell and
Greenbaum (writers of all the Darlings episodes) were both city boys, so
they kept this book handy and referred to it whenever they worked on Darling
scripts.

There are books on everything. Suggestions: go to bn.com (Barnes and Noble)
or amazon.com and type in mountain folklore, or do a google.com seach for same
and that'll yield books--probably with a link to amazon.

Good ole Barn, 45 years, why it seemed just yesterday he was celebrating 5
years on the force. Those ideas to commerate the occasion were great. I'd
like to add some. How about a medal, nothing flashy with diamonds, how about
emeralds since it's the stone for May. Since Barney's birthstone is ruby,
maybe a couple could be added. Of course there should be a parade, but who
would lead in the squad car? It could end at the big oak tree where Barney
could be serenaded by the Mayor's daughter and the town choir singing, "Welcome
sweet deputy, we greet thee in song". Followed by a party in his honor.
Better stock up on rootbeer. I think the bigger the moulage made, the better.

Fellow Mayberryians: Some stole the plaque to Andy and Opie's TVLand Statute
in Raleigh.

Paul Gilkes

Plaque stolen from Mayberry statue

RALEIGH
May 6, 2004
Such a theft wouldn't have happened in fictional Mayberry because Sheriff
Andy Taylor would have shamed the would-be crook. But it has happened in the
big city of Raleigh.

Someone stole the plaque marking the bronze statue commemorating "The Andy
Griffith Show," just six months after it was installed in Pullen Park. The
plaque bore the words "a simpler time, a sweeter place."

Hundreds of Griffith fans came Oct. 28 to watch the unveiling of the statue
and hear from Griffith, Mayberry's Sheriff Taylor.

The rectangular plaque and its concrete setting disappeared between 2 p.m.
April 28 and noon Monday, when Raleigh parks and recreation workers noticed
it missing from in front of the life-size Andy and Opie. Whoever dug it up
took the time to fill in the hole and cover it with mulch, said Raleigh
police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

The artwork is on permanent loan to the city from cable network TV Land, and
it is not yet clear what the company will do about the stolen plaque, said
Carol S. Jones of Raleigh's parks and recreation department. The city's
insurance will not cover it, she said.

Ali Poleman, 11, went to the park with her mother to see the statue
Wednesday and said she knew how the TV sheriff would feel about it.

"He would have been mad," she said. "I'm glad it wasn't the statue."

There is a series of books that came out around thirty years ago, maybe less,
called "Foxfire." Several different volumes were put out, each one designated
by a number. They were a compilation of various types of folklore (traditional
remedies, recipes, agricultural methods, customs, etc.), and I believe the lore
was gathered principally in the Appalachian region. I don't know if these
books are still in print, but you could probably find some in your local
library or on the Internet.

The theives not only took the plaque, they took the concrete base as well!
Then, they filled in the hole and covered it with mulch so it wouldn't be so
obvious.
Strange thing is, it was missing somewhere between April 28 and May 5!! Can't
believe it took a week for someone to notice it was gone!
