According to Mayberry 101 and Everett Greenbaum this means "hush up." This
was said when vendors would go up alleys in his mother's home town of
Philadelphia and people did not want to listen to them.

fish!" ? I guess this was supposed to be an insult but I've never

Some time back, someone else asked that question. My personal theory (though
unconfirmed) is that it refers to the old-time peddlers who pushed their carts
through city streets and peddled their wares from door to door. They used to
holler out whatever it was they were selling so that the neighborhood
housewives could run out and make their purchases. I believe Gomer is
insulting Barney by saying that he's no better than a lowly fish peddler
hawking his smelly merchandise in the alleys.
Now, it seems like someone else earlier offered a completely different
explanation -- don't remember now what it was. Maybe we'll hear from someone
else with some definite knowledge of the origin of that expression, but for
now, "That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!"

Subject: Goober in Gallatin!
"Wally" and I had a great time in Gallatin today. We arrived at Memory
Lane right at noon, just in time to see "Goober" walk out. He was in
rare form and seemed to have a great time. He cracked jokes, mingled,
signed autographs, posed for photos and was interviewed by a local radio
station that broadcast live during the two-hour event. "Wally" and I
had our photos taken with "Goober," got a few autographs, and got to
chat with him quite a bit. Many people turned out to meet George and we
were glad to see it was such a success. "Wally" and I stayed for two
hours and met many Tennessee fans of TAGS and invited several folks to
join TennesseeTAGS at
http://www.tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/TennesseeTAGS. We met Ricky Greer
who recently acquired a Mayberry Squad car and hope to see him and some
of the other nice folks we met at future events. A lot of people we met
were not real plugged in to any club or TAGS list, so we were able to
tell a lot of folks about upcoming events. Quite a few people said they
had heard about the event from the www.ChristianActivities.com/Mayberry
website!

I found a city map of Mayberry, North Carolina, that I keep posted on my
desk at work.
The map was done by James L. Dean of Dothan, Alabama.
I was just wondering what buildings were labeled 1-24.
Andy's house, Mayberry High and a few streets are labeled.
This has me curious, curious, curious.(Andy semi-quote.)
This is the website I found the map at:
http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/dc269/mayberry_city_map_large.pdf
Please e-mail me back direct and not thru the website.
Thank you,
Margaret
