Hey there! I'd pick Thelma Lou but that's because of all the women who
came & went over the years she was my absolute favourite one. No offense
to Helen, Ellie walker, Nurse Peggy, Flora, etc but T L had to put up
with a lot of things. Barney was a cheap date & you know she heard those
rumours about Juanita. And he always tried to get a bit too frisky. Yet
she almost lways stayed her same sweet self & had no trouble getting
along with any of the other people in Mayberry, tho some (Gomer comes to
mind) gave her pause for a minute or two.

Hi Folks: Next to Tags, I Love Lucy is my second favorite show. I was in the
mood to see some classics Lucille Ball movies and went to the library to check
out Ziegfield Follies, Yours, Mine and Ours and The Long, Long Trailer.
Wouldn't you know it our own but a lot younger Floyd Lawson made an appearance
in the last film. It's always fun to see Mayberry stars in other shows. If
your library doesn't have the movie I'm sure they can interlibrary loan them
for you. PS Does anybody have a copy of Angel in My Pocket? I'd love to have a
copy of that film. Thanks and here's hoping you all have a Mayberry Day!

Actually a number of Mayberry-ites appeared in "Green Acres," some like
Parley Baer even had more than one role. Hal Smith also appeared multiple
times as
differing characters, and Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling) even played one
of Eb's love interests!

My 12-year-old son and I were watching a movie on AMC and the next movie
came on without us really planning to watch it. The title was "Cheaper By
the Dozen" starring Myna Loy and Clifton Webb made in 1950.
We became interested in it to compare it to the "remake" and my son suddenly
said "There's Thelma Lou!" Sure enough there she was. Betty Lynn played
the part of Deborah Lancaster, a Southern Belle from Mississippi.
We also saw the hired man (Edgar Buchanan) playing the part of a doctor.
Check it out the next time it comes on.

Did anyone mention Old man Kelsey? We can't forget someone who has a crick,
woods and ocean named after him!
I also liked seeing Bill Idealson in TDVDS revisited. I thought it was cute to
see Herman and Sally married.

Well, Aunt Bee was the Mayberry Chef, but also a contestant on "Win or Lose."
Howard Sprague did a standup comedy routine at the expense of several of his
fellow Mayberry citizens. Not necessarily TV, but Andy and Aunt Bee were
portrayed by actors in a movie.
On "Gomer Pyle, USMC," Gomer and Sgt. Carter once appeared on a "Dating Game"
type show called "Win a Date," and Aunt Bee appeared on a talk show
discussing life at Camp Henderson after she visited Gomer. And I think a TV
crew was
on the scene to cover a cave search after Goober once disappeared on "Mayberry
RFD." Another news crew interviewed Sheriff Barney Fife in the TV Movie
"Return to Mayberry."

Subject: Unseen characters and the non-masked singer
Date: Thu, 27 May 2004 07:52:04 -0400
On the topic of unseen characters..I'm going to break them down in three
groups
there is a very long list of dozens or perhaps even a few hundred that were
mentioned only once.
I'll call those category 1. The name was just put in to add detail or humor
to a story, and then they are never heard from again. Like Nate Bushy, Luke
Taft etc.
Then there are those that are mentioned more than once...but in the same
show. Call these category 2
Like Edgar Coleman. Barney mentions his name on the phone once, and then
repeats in when he says accusingly to Thelma Lou "and what about Edgar
Coleman?". Laura Lee Hobbs is another in this category. Gomer says that
she told him about the Gold truck, and then Andy repeats her name when he
say "You Me Gomer and Laura Lee Hobbs are going to be here to meet it"
See how many others of these folks you can name. Hodie Snitch is another
one.
Finally we have Category 3, which we'll call "running characters"
(mentioned in more than one show) that are never seen. In that group would
be Sarah and Juanita at the Diner. Others? Leonard Blush (the masked
singer) perhaps...though he was only mentioned a few times, it was in
different episodes.
So any more Category 2 or Category 3s?
Speaking of singers...I asked this last year and only a few from outside
Indiana knew, so I'll see who remembers, and if any of the new folks know.
There is a singer who comes to Indiana every year about this time of year to
sing one song. Who is it, what is their Mayberry connection, and why do
they come? (hint it's a little bigger than the county insecticide
convention)
The Untrained Voice (not to be confused with this nonmasked singer)

Here's my opinion about who would win a TAGS Survivor and who would be the
first to go. (I don't even watch Survivor.) Barney would win because Andy
would
make sure of it. Only nobody else would know. Just like that camping trip
they took when Barney thought he caught a pheasant and started a fire with two
sticks. The loser would be Lydia Crossthwaite. Everything disagrees with
her. Pretzels lay on her chest and she gets car sick and nauseous. She would
never last.

Hi everybody it's been awhile since I've written in to the digest. We're just
having a busy spring here in Cincinnati dodging those beautiful cicada's! I
hope all of you are having a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. I was kind of
hoping that the Mayberry Band would perform in our local parade, but I don't
know how everyone would react to Barney's cymbals!! I have some elderly
neighbors. Barney!!!
I wanted to put my two cents worth in about David in Texas and the name for his
new puppy. We have a male Cairn Terrier named Toby ourselves and I want you to
know that Cairn's are full of personality that is for sure. I love the idea of
you all naming her after a TAGS character. I love all the choices you have
made and I thought it might be a good idea to wait and name her after you
figure out what character from TAGS her personality is the most like......
Charlene if she's really friendly and all over you etc..... Remember our Andy
has a yellow lab that he named Charlene for that very reason.
..............lot's of luck to you and yours.................

Mostly all fords, but there was the Volkswagen Beetle seen occasionally
and I think a 1960 Chevy that is parked on the street quite a bit. Jim
Lindsey had one of those foreign jobs (A Mercedes) but the Mid-Mountain
Finance Company kind of took care of that action.
Barney's first car was a beautiful 1954 Ford, license plate MP-3791.
Althoug it seems it needed a whole host of repairs, as well as a good
wash.
I think Floyd had a Model A, if I remember correctly . What did Otis
drive - I think a 32 Ford Roadster

There were a whole bunch since the show was filmed outside a lot. Some
people fear having current-day cars in a sitcom will hurt a show's chances in
reruns (because the video will appear dated) but TAGS apparently proved that
wrong.
Anyway...there have been a few Ford station wagons, including a '61 Country
Squire that appeared a lot during the early years. (It played an especially
funny role in the one about Barney's motorcycle.) I have seen a Ford Mustang
appear several times, and there's the occasional Chevy, like a '59 that pops up
a lot and Howard's '64 Biscayne (a low-rent version of the Impala). Don't
forget Mr. Tucker's '62 Lincoln Continental, a car that apparently impressed
Goober so much he had his picture taken next to it. And I recall seeing a '67
Mercury Cougar at the auto show where Goober saw his old friend.
For the record, Aunt Bee's car was more of a '55 or '56 Ford, and Barney's
lemon was a '53 or (I think) '54 Ford. And Goober's light-blue pickup truck
was
a 1950s era Ford. (Sam Jones also had a 1950s Ford pickup, but it was a
later model.) I don't know the make of Floyd's car, but it appears to be 1940
or
so vintage and I think the Fun Girls were pulled over in the same car in
another episode.

Yes - some of my parents friends dressed like that in the sixties. kind
of a bad used car salesman look. If he was wearing a white belt and all

Dime a Dance - yes Also Called Taxi Dancers. "Sweet Charity" was a
Shirley McLaine movie (1969) about the subject. It was also a Broadway
Show. Until recently in Detroit there were a couple 2nd floor places
left on Woodward Ave in seedy locations that still existed. I'm certain
that more than dancing was going on by the end of the era. Probably at
the beginning too.
