I saw an old commercial yesterday on Minute by Minute, a show on the
History Channel. Mr. Knotts was the spokesperson for the Chrysler
Corporation in the early 1970's. This was about the time of the 440
cubic inch, and Super Bee 426 cubic inch Chrysler products, and the
announcer said "Who would have thought Barney Fife doing commercials for
muscle car Chryslers." The announcer did say "After all with people
like Clint Eastwood in the wings, why pick Don Knotts? I am interested
in knowing if anyone has seen any of the commercials, or if someone on
our list might have them on VHS. I was quite funny to see Mr. Knotts
hawking 440 hemis. He was a typical Barney in the commercial.
Thanks, Jim

Subject: Goober puppy and Mayberry Days
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2004 08:54:42 -0400
Hey everybody. Been a while sense I posted, but just wanted to spread
the word that we took in an 8 week old puppy over the weekend and we
named him Goober. I wonder if he is a talking dog? Anyway, I don't
guess it's never too early to start talking about Mayberry Days so here
goes. For the last 4 years we have been to Mayberry Days and every year
we always take our 5th wheel camper and camp for the weekend around the
area. This year we thought we would camp right in Mt. Airy and was
wondering if anyone else also camped when they came for the weekend? If
so then maybe we could camp at the same place and have a mini Mayberry
get together at the campground during the fun time at Mayberry Days.
Nothing formal, maybe just setting around the campfire talking about our
favorite show and have a cookout or something. If anyone is interested,
just let me know and maybe we can work something out. Well got to go,
Horatio (Kevin)

I agree wholeheartedly about Warren. I enjoyed him very much and was very
disappointed when he left the show. I think my favorite episode with him was
when he arrested all the ladies in town for gambling, via the Bingo route.
Just like Emmett replacing Floyd, I think with time Warren would have been
fully accepted and would have been a great addition to the cast.

I have to agree with Richard Veitz, I don't think Warren ever got his proper
due. Sure, he was no Barney, but suppose Art Carney quit "The Honeymooners"
or Michael Richards quit "Seinfeld," how would you like to be the actor who
would've taken *their* places? It's hard to fill the shoes of a television
legend, and Barney was already one in 1965. We never really had a chance for
Warren to warm up in his role before his departure. I have to wonder if it was
more about the chemistry with Andy (a very important thing, I would agree) than
whether he'd work out on the show.

The 4th Annual Mayberry Squad Car Nationals were a big hit again this year. The
crowds continue to grow and everyone enjoyed the day despite the heat. There
were 5 cars attending and as one of the finish line officials, I got to witness
just how close the final race was - literally less than a fender.
Congratulations to the "Hearty Eatin' Men and Beautiful Delicate Women"
Chapter's Unit #2 for successfully defending their drag race title, this time
with a different driver (a local DJ who is probably still smiling from all the
fun he had that day).
Everyone enjoyed having Maggie Peterson, George Lindsey, and James Best attend
and they enjoyed their weekend as well. The town of Brent continues to improve
the park and it is a great place for this Mayberry event. Many thanks to
Kenneth Junkin for his efforts in making this all happen, plus friends who
brought their squad cars in for the fun and David Browning for just being there
to entertain us all.
See you in Nashville,
Jeff

If Harriet's chickens aren't enough to guard the statue, I've got quite a few
too. They got their feathers ruffled when they heard about the goings-on in
Raleigh.
Have a Mayberry kind of day.

That was a great list! One thing came to my mind that you missed, though.
Don't forget about Bee's experience flying an airplane! I would think that
would be one of the great thrills of her life. That episode was even titled
"Aunt Bee's Big Moment"!

Are Harriett's chickens loose again??? Tell her that her rooster and 2 of
her hens are sittin' in the chinaberry tree in my back yard. I called Andy
at home about coming to get them out, but he said he didn't have the ladder.

I agree. You may be in the minority on this, but count me in on your minority.
At first, I did not care much for Warren, but after watching the episodes he is
in, I have come to appreciate him. He is no Barney, but he is funny in his own
way. I don't watch all of the color episodes anymore, but I do watch the ones
with Warren, along with a few others. My favorite Warren episode is "Girl

I'm in South Carolina after a reunion but heading to Nashville tomorrow.
Couldn't resist getting in on the dishes discussion though. I got mine
from one of the shopping channels after my beloved saw it and ordered it
for me for our anniversary that year. I know you can get some pieces
thru the Betty Crocker catalog if you save the labels from her products.
There are different versions and qualities and therefore great variations
in prices. In any case, happy collecting and serving a la Aunt Bee!

<<Is Mrs. Wiley's Social Club the same as the Singles Forum founded by Allan?>
>
Hey Doug,
No...they're not the same. Mrs. Wiley's Social Club is a YahooGroup where
single folks from all over the internet can come and visit with one another in
a
Mayberry way. Here's the URL for the site
http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/MrsWileys/
This shouldn't be confused with the "Mrs. Wiley's" section of The WBMUTBB
Chapter's "Golden Door to Good Fellowship" which was set up for just WBMTUBB
members who are single to visit in a more private way. ONLY WBMTUBB Members can
access Mrs. Wiley's OR the Fellowship Hall at the Golden Door.
http://www.mayberry.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl
The Golden Door is also a place that will allow more freedom in topics that
we have here on the Digest since to read those comments you would have to go
and visit the site instead of just having the comments show up in your Inbox.
It's a good way to allow folks that have something to say to just say it.
Y'all drop by and get registered. Both places certainly have their place in
Mayberry. There can NEVER be too much Mayberry on the web.

I have to agree with you, Richard. As I view the Warren Ferguson episodes
today, I've come to believe that Jack Burns did a much better job than we give
him credit for... nobody could follow Don Knotts as Barney Fife, including
Jerry
Van Dyke, who was originally supposed to replace him. Even today, with TV
Land, Don Knotts is winning awards as best supporting character. Barney's a
legend, but Warren really was okay! I, too, would love to see Jack Burns come
to
Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy!

Just so folks know, the "Mayberry" chapter of Knoxville, Tennessee will
be meeting for dinner before the Grand Ole Opry show this Saturday, June
19 at 4:30 at the Alabama Grill at Opry Mills, which is walking distance
from the Opry. Just ask for the "Mayberry" party. We'd love to meet all
the fellow Goobers before the show.
