On Mayberry RFD, Ralph, a black farmer, became a regular cast member. His
daughter also appeared when Goober was the driver education teacher at the
school. Now I know this isn't a TAGS episode, but they did reside in Mayberry.

Hey everyone, been away for a while, but wanted to share a Mayberry Moment
with ya'll. My father-in-law lives in Laurens, SC, and last time we were down
there we were out to lunch at Hickory Hills or maybe even Shealy's, but when
they asked my 16 yr. old son what he wanted to drink, he responded "No coffee,
tea or punch, thank you". I was so proud. Everybody have a great day.

Hey Ron - I also grew up in Greensboro eating Yum Yum Hotdogs & Ice Cream
and drinking Cheerwine. In fact, the first 1 1/2 years I was married I
lived a half bolck from that wonderful establishment. Enery Saturday it was
4 dogs all the way, a Cheerwine and a 1/2 gallon of ice cream to go. When I
was first married I resembled Barney; when we moved I looked like Otis. I
now live in Winston-Salem which has a fine HD & CW establishment known a
Pulliams. They also have a regionally famous Bakery called Dewey's that
sells Salt Rising bread. For those of you Mayberry Days visitors who have
never tasted Salt Rising bread (featured in Dogs, Dogs, Dogs), the Closest
Dewey's is only about 45 minutes from downtown Mt Airy.

There was at least one African American in the line that was standing
outside the army office when Ernest T. wanted to be inducted.

Subject: Confession of a Ruse--Barney statue
Date: Mon, 21 Jun 2004 13:51:50 -0400

Dear Gloria..and anyone else who took my little story more serious
than intended.
I confess the Barney Fife statue story below (and one a few days prior) was
just something I made up to stir up a little conversation. Then to make
matters worse, I was gone for a week (and just let the story hang). To set
the record straight, the Andy Opie statue really has been vandalized, with
the plaque being stolen, and then the fishing poles. I just wondered what
us true Mayberry fans would like to see happen (in light of the vandalism),
and I envisioned Barney on a stakeout similar to the one when he posed as a
mannequin in Weaver's store. So I had him posing as another statue, to try
to spot the crooks on a return visit.. Then the guys who picked him up were
supposed to Be Gomer, Goober and Floyd.

Sorry for anyone who did not catch the tongue in cheek humor, and thought it
was somewhat true. On my word as a gentleman, I did not mean to deceive.
Or perhaps Gloria just wanted to continue the ruse...Oh what a dangerous web
we weave when we practice to deceive.

Wretch wretch, that's what I am, a deceitful wretch
The Untrained Voice (at least I didn't involve a talking dog....)

>>>What I'm wondering about the goings-on in Raleigh is why someone didn't
notify the authorities when they saw what was going on. I remember the
episode where Goober pretended he was held up and he described what had
happened. Andy asked him if he didn't suspect something was up with the guy
that supposedly held him up when he came in a disguise. Does anyone know
who put up the Barney statue? Maybe the people that put up the statue and
then replaced it with another one are one and the same. Gloria Bruce<<<

Raleigh news sources report that the Mystery Barney Fife Statue which
mysteriously appeared earlier in the week, near the vandalized statute of
Andy and Opie, disappeared without explanation. A witness in the park
feeding the pigeons reported that two mechanics came with a filling station
truck, covered the statue with a sheet, loaded in on the truck and took it
away.

Fans have been on edge eve since a plaque at the base of the Griffith statue
was taken and then the fishing poles were stolen, and subsequently returned.

A park official saw the sheet-covered statue being removed and asked an
unidentified passenger in the truck what was going on. A small man with
thick glasses reportedly replied simply...." He needs a haircut... and a
peanut butter and jelly sandwich."

Then, this morning when joggers arrived at the Raleigh park, and the popular
TVLand Statue of Andy and Opie (portrayed by Andy Griffith and Ron Howard)
they noticed that the Barney Fife Statue had been replaced...or one similar
to it. This time the statue was in full Deputy uniform instead of the
hunting jacket and cap.. It is also surrounded by two surveillance cameras
labeled "electronal marvels--high speed reconnaissance."

The new statue also bears a plaque at the base, seemingly burned into wood
that says. "No smoking anywhere near the statue. Obey all rules. Do not
write on the statue or shoot paint balls at it, as it takes lot of work to
wash writing and paint balls off the statue...and the paint balls hurt the
statue"

TVLand officials still claim no knowledge of the peculiar new statue of
Barney Fife.
Don Knotts still could not be reached for comment.
When Andy Griffith was told about the new statue, he reportedly broke out in
a wide grin, but made no comments.

Sure had a great time in Nashville, TN at the Mayberry Cast Reunion Show
this weekend!

Thrilled to see the stars of TAGS especially Mr. Knotts!! And the standing
ovation for him at the Opry was wonderful!

Good to meet Allen (our own Floyd) and another chapter member, the very
nice Jim M. (and his parents) from Ohio... <Hi Jim>

It was a lovely weekend. Sure glad my hubby and I went!

The entire plot line of this episode could have been avoided had Ellie
Walker done just one thing. All she had to do was phone the town Doctor
& get his okay over the phone. Or he could have sent over a prescription
for the pills. Glad she never thought of it however, as it wouldn't have
been as good an episode.

Hi All,

Flora I am so sorry to hear of your items lost, I sure hope you get
them back. I didn't get to go to the whole package thing ,sure wish I
could have.I did get to go to the Opry though and was so pleased to see
the cast. I went up front and got on the floor so that I could get
pictures so if they turn out good you are welcome to a copy. I was on my
knees beside the opry employee that makes you stay down. I sure hope they
turn out after what my knees went thru, I'm not small so it was hard
getting up, hahaha...While I was there on the floor , Jim was to my
right. I bet he got some really good pics with that nice camera he
had...It was a special night for me because I got the rock that Earnest T
threw. It hit that opry employee(made of foam) and went right on
the floor in front of me. I put it on my computer and am so happy when I
look at it I think that Earnest T held that.I was thrilled.

It's me, It's me, It's Earnest T.

In response to Ed O'Dwyer's posting of the list of sightings of African
Americans in Mayberry, all I can say is "Wow!" for two reasons. First, I knew
that there were quite a few, but I was not aware there were so many. Second,
that question comes up a lot as we get new members and now we have an answer.
I just can't stand unanswered questions. Thanks, Ed!

super fine post of all the African Americans found in TAGS.
I don't think anyone has ever come up with a list that complete
in the whole time I have been getting the Digest and this topic
has been brought up many, many times. Way to go Ed!

Why was it that some recurring characters on TAGS had their names changed
during the course of the series run? For instance...

George Lindsey was originally Goober Beasley, then Goober Pyle.
Cheerio Meredith was originally Emma Brand, then Emma Watson.
Hope Summers was originally Bertha Johnson, then Clara Edwards.

Was this inconsistency due to a change in writers or because the new name just
sounded better?

Several actors played more than one role on TAGS (Frances Bavier, Rance Howard,
Dub Taylor, Joe Hamilton, Jack Dodson, Howard Morris, Allan Melvin, and Charles
Thompson, just to name a few who come to mind), but I can only think of one
instance where the same character role was played by more than one actor: DUD
WASH. I guess Floyd, the barber, could also be included, but it is unclear
whether both barbers are supposed to be the same character. Am I forgetting
some others?

Oops, my wife just thought of a couple of other instances where more than one

Golly, if I forgot Wally and ol' Ben, then there must be some others too. Hey,
