Norm Alden played "Tom Strongbow" in "The Battle of Mayberry" Episode
188 as well as "Hank" in "Howard, the Bowler" Episode 224.
Norm Alden's body of work is very lengthy and impressive. He started
acting on TV in 1955 and was still getting parts in 2003. His roles in
movies start in 1960, with his latest role being in K-PAX (2001).

Richard! You grew up in Greensboro? Cool! I did too....lived over near the
old Guilford Dairy, went to Braxton Craven school, and Saturdays was a trip to
the Carolina Theatre for Circle K. In my older years, I moved to
Winston-Salem, then to Belews Creek. Still made the trip to Yum Yum weekly for
three dogs all the way, no slaw and a Cheerwine. I tried Pulliams, but to me
nothing beats Yum Yum. Just like here in Nashville now, nothing can beat Fat
Mo's burgers. I can see it now...we get a friendly moulage going here about
where the best dogs and/or burgers are. **Barn

Hey Brent: Thanks for the link to the Doris Dowling obit in the LA Times. I
took time to go there..register and read it. I didn't realize she had done all
that stuff. No wonder Floyd was so captivated by her in the Gay Deceiver.
Although, I never cared for her that much in that episode. After I read the
obit I do remember her in some of those older films. I copied the obit, saved
it and emailed it to some folks I know who like Mayberry, too. Skippy, "Oh
what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive."

While it's possible and arguable that Floyd Colby and Floyd Lawson are two
different people, the writers clearly intended otherwise, so I would count them
as the same character.

Subject: Same/different names in Mayberry
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 2004 09:36:44 -0400
>George Lindsey was originally Goober Beasley, then Goober Pyle.
>Cheerio Meredith was originally Emma Brand, then Emma Watson.
>Hope Summers was originally Bertha Johnson, then Clara Edwards.
Funnier still is that sometimes they live one place and in other episodes
they live "somewhere's else". The first episode that Goober appears in (Fun
Girls) he's introduced as Gomer's cousin (hence Pyle) but in a later color
episode he mentions something about when he and Andy were in grade school
together right cheer in Mayberry. Which leads us to a speculative query - If
Andy grew up in Mayberry and Aunt Bee helped raise him then she would have
already been well known when she came to live with him and Opie even though
she's considered a newcomer (interloper?) to town. In Manhunt Emma
Brand/Watson lives out near the road "that's not on the map" but in the
episode Ellie Comes To Town she lives in town. When you list the residents
of Mayberry it's amazing how many have the same last names and first names.
Must be the "writer in the man".
How many Digest members have a "name's the same" as a show character? I'll
take the banker lady......
Harriet, uncommon name and chicken thief
......"Johnny Paul Jason says chewing tar is good for your teeth"..."That's
an old wives tale"...."Johnny Paul ain't married"........

A big thanks to Ed for the work-in-progress list of African-American
citizens seen on Mayberry. I thought I'd seen African-Americans in the
background. I just knew it wasn't in my mind.

Floyd was played by two different people. Ben Weaver was played by a number of
various actors over the years. Wally was also played by various actors. Also
regarding name changes, I believe Millie Swanson was Millie Hutchins or
something to that effect when she first appeared on TAGS.

Just wanted everyone to know how much we enjoyed the Nashville Show. It was
great to see Don Knotts. Especially enjoyed the choir scene he did. It's good
to know that he still fits in the old salt and pepper suit. He looked extra
sporty!! These parts are really special as they take you back to the actual
shows we remember and love to watch. I would really like to see more of these.
I
know that our Floyd and Otis did the great convict one awhile back, it was
great, would like to see it again. I would love to see Otis and Barney do the
rope
jumping scene on stage, I just got the end of it in the parade last year.
Maybe it was just spontaneous. We also enjoyed all the other cast members.
Everyone was super nice as always. Geore Lindsay was especially friendly and
we
enjoyed his comedy act. The Grand Ole Opry show was just great, we had never
been
to it so it was a treat. So glad of the response that the Mayberry Cast
received, I think they were appreciated by all. Of course the Opry Land Resort
was
just beautiful. For those of you who have never been there would certainly
reccomend it. Folks were very helpful and courteous. It was just an all around
FUN trip. Was glad to see that Weaver's was busy as usual, think Jim had sold
out of alot, so the support was good. Thanks to Allan, David, and all the
people who worked so hard at the show. APPRECIATE IT.

Three different actors played Ben Weaver, and FOUR different actors played
Wally.

No, the blonde haired nurse Mary played by Sue Ane Langdon is simply called
Mary, no last name is ever given. Dark-haired Mary Simpson was played by
Julie Adams.

That's actor Norm Alden in both roles. His most memorable movie role is in
"Back to the Future," where he played Lou, the owner of the diner.

The entire plot line of this episode could have been avoided had Ellie
Walker done just one thing. All she had to do was phone the town Doctor
& get his okay over the phone.
>>>
But that wouldn't have worked, because Emma had never been to see a doctor
in the first place. Fred had apparently correctly diagnosed her "condition"
himself and just sold her the pills over-the-counter (seems to me when Emma
first came in, Ellie should simply have taken 5 seconds to see what "them
little blue pills" really were, but then like you said that wouldn't have
made such a good story).

Subject: Reunion Show - Nashville
Just wanted to say what a great time we had last weekend. My parents
said it was one of the best trips they have ever taken (me too!).
It was so nice to meet so many wonderful people, like Brenda Joe (glad
to hear you and your husband made it home safely). Also, in talking to
the cast members, they were all very nice, just as expected. It was just
like being in Mayberry for a couple of days.
It was kind of sad when it came time to yell, "everyone on the truck".
Thanks to all who put this together (I hope they do it again soon).

Despite the glitches at Opryland, we had a good time at the reunion
weekend. Seeing the stars again was nice and the show was fun with David
Browning doing a superb job as emcee. Being at the Opry was awesome! We
owe Jim a huge thank you for starting all these wonderful opportunities
when he founded TAGSRWC 25 years ago!!!

Re: Why was it that some recurring characters on TAGS had their names
changed during the course of the series run? For instance...
George Lindsey was originally Goober Beasley, then Goober Pyle.
Cheerio Meredith was originally Emma Brand, then Emma Watson.
Hope Summers was originally Bertha Johnson, then Clara Edwards.
Was this inconsistency due to a change in writers or because the new
name just sounded better?
Also don't forget that Floyd was Colby, then Lawson. I don't know
about all of them, but I do know that when Gomer departed, Goober was
to take his place as his cousin, hence the name change. Incidentally,
Mr Lindsey was originally supposed to play Gomer before Andy saw Jim
Nabors perform at a nightclub.

Jim (an others) - don't forget about Mayberry in the Midwest III coming up
July 9-10 in New Castle, IN. That weekend is plum full of wonderful people,
even more cast members (with four who were not in Nashville), and is much
more affordable than Opryland. I attended last year's event and was very
impressed with everything they had going on that weekend. I'm sure everyone
will have even more fun this year.
