Subject: Doris Dowling -- Madelyn Grayson on TAGS
Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2004 08:52:47 -0400
I was sorry to hear about the passing June 18 of Doris Dowling, Madelyn
Grayson in the TAGS episode "The Gay Deceiver." During one of my West Coast
jaunts three years ago to an autograph show in Los Angeles, I had the
distinct pleasure of meeting Ms. Dowling at her small, but quaint West Los
Angeles home after contacting her earlier so she could autograph my copy of
Jim Clark and Ken Beck's book, Mayberry Memories. She was a classy lady, big
in presence, yet small in stature. She was only a little over 5 feet tall
(I'm over 6 feet and towered over her.) I imagine the camera placement
during her appearance on TAGS made her seem about the same height as many of
the other main characters -- that is, larger than life. And like the other
characters, she was. She'll be missed.

Was watching the episode last night in which Andy stages the fake robbery at
Walker's to bolster Barney's confidence and again saw something which always
strikes me as strange. After Barney had captured the suspected robber, Andy
calls the sheriff in Chattanooga to check on the suspect's story. When Andy
gets the other sheriff on the line he introduces himself as "Sheriff Taylor,
from over in Mayberry" or something similar to this. What has always struck
me as odd is that Andy didn't say Mayberry, NC or in some way tell him where
Mayberry is. Chattanooga is a long way from Mayberry, but Andy just speaks
as if his Chattanooga counterpart knows exactly where it is. Maybe they've
met before or something. Anyone else ever noticed this?

Character actor Norm Alden who played Tom Strongbow in the Battle of
Mayberry episode of TAGS did appear later as Hank, the captain of the Mt.
Pilot bowling team when Jack Dodson (Howard Sprague) bowled his perfect 300
game. Last year, I was able to contact him directly to obtain his autograph
for my growing Mayberry collection and he had nothing but positive things to
say about his experiences on The Andy Griffith Show. He was 79 at the time
and still acting, primarily doing commercials. His most famous commercials
are those he did in the 1970s for AAMCO transmissions. He said he became so
familiar on the street to people who recognized him from the commercials
that they often asked him questions about how to fix problems with their
cars. And as a bit of TAGS trivia, Alden said he still has the bowling shoes
he wore as the captain of Mt. Pilot's bowling team. And he also has a sense
of humor. On the photo he autographed for me he wrote, "Hang this in your
kitchen, it will help keep the flies away."

I was watching TAGS on WGN this morning and noticed that Helen was singing in
church with the other members. I don't know if this counts as times that Helen
was seen singing or not.
Have a Mayberry kind of day.

After Mayberry Days, I'm going to spend a week in Greensboro. I've got
literature on the city and am studying up on it. I also plan to go to Raleigh
to see the "Andy and Opie" statue, Frances Bavier's grave, and I have to try
Yum Yum hot dogs and Cheerwine.
Have a Mayberry kind of day.

Harriet asked about Digest members who have a same name as a show character? I
am so happy to report that my maiden name is Crawford, which is the same as
Opie's understanding boss at the drug store. I don't think they ever mentioned
Mr. Crawford's first name, but it would be nice if it were William which was my
dad's name.
This is kind of a stretch, but my mom recently retired from Dillard's
department store. I'll try anything to link myself to Mayberry.
I am intrigued by the talk of those Cheerwine sodas and Yum Yum dogs. If you
are ever passing through Richardson, TX around lunch time, there is a little
place called Del's Charburger that serves good burgers and rootbeers in a
frosty mug. Say the word and I'll meet you there.

>>>Also don't forget that Floyd was Colby, then Lawson.
We never hear anyone address Floyd as Floyd Colby, but that name is painted
on his shop window in
Howard McNear's first episode (Mayberry Goes Hollywood). My theory is that
Floyd Lawson bought the shop from someone named Colby and temporarily
retained the old name for business purposes, changing it to "Floyd's Barber
Shop" at some later date.
If you listen very carefully to the tail end of the "cat barber" scene in
the aforementioned episode, you'll hear Mr. Harmon call Floyd by a different
last name, but it's hard to make out. It sounds to me like "Mr. Feldman."
Those of you who have this episode on tape, check it out and let us know
what you think.

Well Jenny I would, but I've already missed the show, so I guess I'll have
to hide out in Chicargo or Deeee-troit on somewhere's else like that. I
don't think anyone took the story too serious, but the Sheriff did tell me
that there was a big fine possible for calling (emailing?)in a false crime

Just a question for you Cheerwine drinkers.. Do you sing Cheery Beery Bin
when you're drinkin it?
While traveling in Wisconsin last week, I ran across a place called Wiley's

Harriet you asked about character names that match our names. Strangely
there were not many Joe's in Mayberry. I think maybe just a printer.

This morning (Wednesday) when I got up to get ready for work, I turned the
bathroom TV on. Tuesday night my wife had left the satellite on TNT or
something, and there was Howard playing a bell hop on Munsters Come Home or
Munsters Go Home. Since Howard was on the movie, I had to watch about an hour
of it before turning it to our local station for news and weather. Mayberry
connections seem to be everywhere, THANK GOODNESS!!!

Believe it or not, Norm Alden also played characters in children's shows.
There was a show in the 70s that Sid & Marty Krofft did. I believe it was
called "Super Girl." Deidre Hall played the main character, and Norm played a
police chief, if I remember correctly.
Also, if you ever catch an episode of the cartoon series "Aqua Man" from the
Superfriends, listen closely to the voice of Aqua Man. He, too, is played by
Norm Alden. And, Ted Knight, from the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" did the
narration.
Sorry to get too far from Mayberry today. Just wanted to share some t.v.
trivia with ya'll.

>The first episode that Goober appears in (Fun

>episode he mentions something about when he and Andy were in grade school
>together right cheer in Mayberry.
Speaking of relations in Mayberry, (i.e. Gomer and Goober as cousins), I also
remember in one of the early TAGS episodes (possibly the first) something
about Andy mentioning to Barney about how they were such good cousins and even
going to school together in the second grade. In later episodes, however,
they talk about their friendship as if they have only known each other as
adults through their careers.
But, again, they knew each other in high school, as they were both at the
reunion in the color episode. Has anyone else noticed these inconsistencies
with the writing also? Or am I just imagining things? Not criticizing the
writing of the show. Just curious.

Bravo! To alll involved with the Mayberry Reunion at Opryland this past
weekend. It was truly an outstanding event. All the stars put on a great
show Friday evening. David Browning and Allan Newsome were fantastic hosts
for the show. Tribute artists Kenneth Junkin, Jeff Branch, Tim Pettigrew,
Phil Fox, and others interacted with the fans and kept everyone laughing
throughout the entire weekend. The Saturday Grand Ole Opry Show was fantastic
with the Mayberry stars being honored at the end of the evening. Our own

We had to report that we had a great time in Nashville. Getting to see so
many of our friends and the stars is always great and this was no exception.
Allan, David (Opry Stars now!) and the others did a great job keeping
everything
going and every body laughing.
Now its on to Newcastle for Mayberry in the Midwest. As Jeff said in the
last digest, MIMW is a remarkable event that no one should miss, unlike any
others we have been to. We are coming up from South Carolina and can't wait.
I
hope those on the digest who don't yet have tickets will get them as soon as
possible and we can all meet in Indiana. See you there.
