Mayberry Fans,
I'm so glad to read about so many great times everyone had in Nashville
this past weekend.
I couldn't make it this year but I am looking forward to next year.
Just wondering.... is it always in Nashville or does it move from city to
city?
Thanks a bunch..... Eve in Missouri

Subject: Foreign Language
Some foreign langueages spoken in Mayberry. Surely there are others?
1) Barney - Spanish and German when he is trying to find out if Ed Sawyer is a
foreign spy? Also, when they are reading the "Cutlass" Barney says "Si" when
asked if he was in the Spanish Club.
2) The Russians that came for the summit spoke Russian.
3) Andy spoke French in the Feud episode.
4) Spanish - when Aunt Bee, Myrtle, Clara went to Mexico.
5) Mario and his family spoke Italian.
6) Prof. St. John relayed a couple words in foreign language when eating at the
Taylor house and giving his presentation on South America.
7) Aunts Bee's Medicine Man spoke some Indian tongue
8) The gypsies may have uttered a few words in their native tongue..?
9) Frank Smith spoke French when he offered a bottle of wine
10) Barney and Andy learned some French from the waiter in the fancy restaurant
where Barney got snails and brains...
11) Barney read some Latin out of the law book when he arrested the two chicken
farmers
I bet there are a lot more if we all put buckets on our head and think!!!

Subject: Andy's accent in first season
Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2004 08:53:31 -0400
>why do you suppose the producers/directors initiated this change in andy's
>character?
Consider this......When the show started, even with the great response from
the Danny Thomas epsiode as the pilot - they tape all the shows for the
first season before they air them so the character's character is pretty
much the same as they don't know how the show is going to be accpeted. Watch
Waltons - Olivia is very countryfied - her accent changes over time, just
like in TAGS. So after the first season is taped and shown and the response
is overwhelming the produces, directors, writers all figure they got us
hooked like a starving catfish and they start to smooth out the character's
character...Even if Andy felt his accent was fakey - and ALL actor's
southern accent sounds fakey, even Vivien Leigh's GWTW's character - he knew
he wouldn't be able to carry it forever and now that the show was a hit it
obviously didn't matter what he sounded like - we wanted him, wanted to
watch him, be more like him, fit in and be one of us.....like how I twisted
that around to explain???
Also, notice how small the court house seems in the first season - no
windownear the cells, little things that seem to grow over time and change
to better suit the moment.....without the court house window they wouldn't
have been able to do the scene with Opie and Andy talking about what you can
do with a grown women, also when Opie listens from outside about how Andy is
having a hard time making money to send him to college. These "fixtures"
just like accents and character's mood have to change to fit the scene.
Notice in Waltons how the "shed" seems to grow to suit whatever had to fit
inside - the printing press - Ben and Cindy's home, etc.
Just a chicken thief's theory.....

There are more suggestions, but these are the "biggies." I hope someone can
read them and they will make a difference at another event.

If you had a good Mayberry time (or otherwise) at Opryland last weekend, you
should let Gaylord Hotels/Entertainment know. The folks putting the show
together were wanting feedback, so let them know (via Opryland) both the good
and bad things so the next time they host an event they will know where to
focus their efforts.

Can't remember if this was mentioned last time when we had the big discussion
on Floyd's last name. For the first time ever, I noticed the window in the
barber shop in the episode where the movie company came to Mayberry and
everyone got all gussied up. All through the episode the barbershop window
said Colby's. But then in the final scene when Andy was walking around town
seeing everything back to normal, on the bottom of the barbershop window it
said Floyd's Barber Shop.

>>> ... there's one thing that strikes me everytime i see those first
episodes. in them, andy was very much a country bumpkin (and i mean that in
the kindest possible sense). his speech was twangy as all get out ....
When the show was conceived, Andy's character was basically the same
character he'd played in "No Time for Sergeants," but with more intelligence
and less naivete. Deputy Fife was an afterthought (there was no deputy in
the pilot episode); it was intended that he would be a minor character.
However, after about a dozen episodes, it became clear that it worked much
better to let Andy be the straight man, and to let Barney be the clown.

...because that other organization that was planning to give them the plaque,
instead gave them the cannon they unloaded in the first place. Apparently
the antique dealer found a sucker--er, buyer. This was explained in the epilog.
I should note that so many long-running TV shows have continuity issues from
episode to episode, the Internet Movie Database won't even accept those types
of mistakes as "goofs" on their website. (I.e., the Taylors' address changing,
Andy having several girlfriends who grew up across the street from the town's
only church, the number of Cliff Huxtable's children, Colonel Blake getting
killed in September 1952 but Colonel Potter having been commander during all of
1951...) If something like that happens within a single episode (two
addresses given for the same house or something), it's a different story.

"ice cream" and sure enough I wasn't.
2. What kind of car was Gilly Walker's car? Any car experts remember the

I guess if people like Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee could be related to Seth Taylor,
I might be related to Tracey Crawford from Chattanooga. But not so's you'd
notice it.
I figure Chinese was spoken in Mayberry when Aunt Bee had the restaurant. This
may not count, but when Sam's Italian friends came to Mayberry they were
serenaded with their "national anthem".

Also, in reference to the town cannon: Last night's epilogue explained that
the cannon was being returned to the town as a gift. My favorite Warren

I would like to know when the reunion or Mayberry "Get Togethers" would
happen on the West Coast? There are fans of Mayberry, Andy, Barney and the
rest of the cast here too. I live in San Francisco and would love to attend
an event close to home.

There is a museum near there that has a replica of the Wright airplane. You're
also near Indianapolis where the famous Speedway is located. They have a
museum and on a tour, you can take a ride around the track. There's also a
museum in New Castle devoted to basketball in Indiana. Hope this helps you.

To: JB and Members,
First, let me say that "all in all" my hubby and I had a great time at the
Mayberry Reunion Weekend in TN. but second, I agree with JB on many
of her comments....
My BIG, and I do mean big, complaint was the show on Friday Night.
The cast performances was fine but the sound system was awful! And
the video clips was just as bad! And it wasn't just my hubby and me, others
at our table could hardly hear the talking either, and folks in line on Sat.
was commenting about it also. To me, the whole thing was extremely
discombobulated!! After being to Mayberry in the Midwest, where the
cast show ran so smoothly and could be heard so well, it was a real
disappointment to us.... I did complain to the management but not sure
how much good that will do for future shows...
My BIG complaint concerning the Mayberry in the Midwest Show, is that
NOTHING is reserved. What a major hassle! You have to stand in line
for hours to everything and then dash like a cat with your tail on fire to
get
a decent seat. In addition, the Saturday autograph session was open to the
public, which I thought was terribly unfair to people who had bought tickets
way in-advance and had traveled great distances. All this will keep me from
the Midwest event in the future... Having a pre-assigned seat, and having to
have a ticket to get into the autograph session, as was in Nashville, was
great!!
Now if we could just get the two events to clone the good aspects from each
other, then it was be almost perfect!!
I'll finish by saying, I'm have no regrets about attending these events.
It's
a fun time that all TAGS fan should do at least once. And end by saying
that I appreciate everyone for letting me express my thoughts, and with a,
"Aren't you kind"....

Subject: Andy's Character Change
Date: Fri, 25 Jun 2004 15:43:39 -0500
>>>but i notice that, as the program progessed, andy's character very soon
became more....i don't know, smooth, almost urbane (for mayberry). the
accent flattened out a bit, and he wasn't quite so (again, kindly) corny.
why do you suppose the producers/directors initiated this change in andy's
character?<<<
I think Andy himself answered this when he was discussing Don Knotts's
characterization of Barney. Andy said that in the beginning of the show,
he was to be the funny one. But after only a couple of shows, he realized
that Barney should be the funny one, and Andy should be the straight man.
So I think a lot of this re-direction of Andy Taylor's character stems from
his switch from the show's comic to the show's straight man.
>>>my theory is that they felt that since everyone else in mayberry was so
eccentric, they needed andy to be more level-headed and 'normal', for lack
of a better phrase.<<<
I would subscribe to that theory. Because Andy didn't just play straight
man to Barney but to most of the other characters on the show, too. Which,
by the way, was a very successful strategy! I would say, though, that --
except for a few characters like Ernest T and the Darlings -- the residents
of Mayberry weren't really eccentric. Most of them had characteristics
that we can probably identify in people we know in real life, which were
simply exaggerated for humor's sake. But they were not one-dimensional
characters. For example, Gomer was goofy and dense most of the time, but
he was also a knowledgeable mechanic (except at the beginning, of course)
and a polished singer, and underneath he was a sensitive and thoughtful
soul (just ask Mary Grace). Andy's very common-sense, voice-of-reason
approach, however, supplied the show's anchor and made Mayberry seem like a
real place. He was the Everyman we can all identify with in some way.
(After all, don't we all tend to think of ourselves as more of an Andy,
even if we're really more like Goober or Floyd??) I believe Andy Taylor's
development as a character was just right for the show.
Sorry for the long post -- I'll take my bucket off now.

Subject: Cheerwine

Having seen some of the comments on Cheerwine, I had to throw in my two
cents' worth. When I was going to school at the Air Force Academy, my dad
used to mail me a 12-pack (or two) since Cheerwine couldn't be found west of
the Mississippi at that time. Since no alcohol was allowed in the dorms, I
used to get a kick out of the Officer in Charge who would question me on my
beverage.
I still get my dad to mail me Cheerwine every now and then and even flew
back home (Colorado) with a 12-pack as one of my carry-ons. I also bought a
gallon of Lexington-style barbecue (that would be pork in a vinegar-based
barbecue sauce for all you who think barbecue only comes in the beef
variety). My favorite meal in the whole world would is Cheerwine and
barbecue.
So this brings be 'round to my TAGS-related question: Was there ever a time
that "barbecue" was mentioned in TAGS? I would just "bust" if there was an
episode giving "barbecue" as a mention, but I can't recall one. Ya'll put
on yer buckets.
