Enough with the hot dogs...... But I grew up on footlong hot-dogs with
chili and a marshmallow Pepsi from the Cree-Mee
in mid Missouri, all for 35 cents. They were GOOD eats while watching TAGS.

Like John, I too noted Andy wearing a tie with his uniform recently. I
guess cuz it was a rare occurrence. Daddy referred to his in the Marine
Corps as a "field scarf!" In watching "Christmas in Connecticut" this
morning, I believe I spotted our Mr. Schwump at the dance, sitting on the
sidelines as usual. Since we do not know his real name, I could not look
for him in the credits. Did anyone else experience this?

OLD RIMSHAW HOUSE
Location: The Rimshaw House is located at 1610 Elm Street not far from
Mayberry Elementary School in Mayberry, North Carolina, twelve miles from
Raleigh.
Description: A foreboding two-story structure on a lonely back road, the
Rimshaw House is an American Federal style structure in increasing
dilapidation.
Many of the windows are broken or boarded up and numerous parts of the wood
edifice are damaged. The property is choked with weeds and overcome with wild
animals.
Ghostly Manifestations: The Old Rimshaw House has actually been a haunted
site for a relatively short amount of time to professional ghost hunters. Many
of
the stories about the place have been spread from one of mouth and obviously
embellished over the years. Nevertheless, several citizens of the wonderful
little town of Mayberry insist that bsomethingb still exists in the old
house.
For an accurate depiction of the house, one just needs to track down the
original witnesses to the phenomenon and the old courthouse records.
In 1949, Sheriff Abe Poindexter was constantly reported to reports of lights
wandering through the darkened structure. Despite how often he searched, he
never reported seeing anything. Several people who drove by the house insisted
that they saw the figure of a man walking by the house and former residents
from that street confirm this. A few added comments continue that the figure
of
the man vanishes from sight as he reaches the end of the property.
In later years, Deputy Sheriff Dale Buckley was consistently patrolling the
area near the house looking for a glimpse of this man. He has left a written
report of a figure he saw in an upstairs window of the place, but that the
figure must have bescaped out the back as I approached because said person
was
missing as he investigated.b He also makes several references to locking the
place
up, but finding the house completely unlocked when he returned. When Buckley
became sheriff, though, he couldnbt keep up the patrols and sent his Deputy
Andrew Gilley to keep an eye on the place. Gilley, however, became responsible
for out right fabricating many of the stories of the tall tales of screams,
phantoms and ghostly laughter later spread through town. Long since retired,
hebs
a bit amused that some of the tales are still being told.
Another person who insists the place is haunted is a long time Mayberry
resident named Floyd Lawson. His father, Charles Lawson, owned the house down
the
block from the Rimshaw House during the late Forties to mid fifties and knew a
lot about the shenanigans that occurred on that street first hand. Several of
the neighbors had problems with figures that prowled their yards and knocking
on the door at night. As Floyd recalls:
bDad was getting waked up at least three to four times a month. He never
found a thing when he searched the yard and sometimes it started up just as
fast
as he closed the door. It too him a while before he started blaming the ghosts
from the Rimshaw; eventually, he just moved us into town and started renting
another house to get away from it.b
During the Sixties, both tramps and illegal moon shiners looking for a hiding
place to brew their illegal whisky frequented the place. A calm, laid-back
and jovial person, Sheriff Andrew Taylor never heard any more weird stories
from
near the house, but then he adds that no one has lived in the vicinity of
that back road in years. A completely rational person, he blames many of the
lights shined on the house from car lights and sounds from the nearby
highway.
History: The Rimshaw House was built by one of the founding families of
Mayberry around 1745. Jefferson Davis reportedly stayed there once as a guest
as he
passed through town, but its interesting history actually begins in the 1940s
while Clayton Rimshaw owned the property. Left alone by his children in the
later years of his life, he began losing his temper and his patience with his
hired help. Many of them left him alone to run the house that pressed him even
more. According to rumor, he caught one hired hand trying to steal from him
and dragged the accused thief down into the cellar where he killed him with an
axe. The validity of this accusation is highly in question because no records
are to be found of any criminal proceedings. Nevertheless, when Rimshaw died,
he did not leave the house to any of his heirs and instead left instructions
for the house to never be disturbed. The deed has been unclaimed for over
fifty
years.
In 1975, Rimshawbs last surviving lawyer left the deed to the City of
Mayberry and because of tenuous historical connections to the house, the
County
Preservation Society has been trying to restore the old house. Plans to
restore the
place as a museum and landmark are still trying to collect funds for the
restoration.
Identity of Ghost: Rumor claims that Clayton Rimshaw is still patrolling the
area to keep bhis deep dark secretb from ever being discovered. Other
accounts claim the ghost of the hired man walks the area screaming for
justice. In
recent years, no new paranormal research has come from the house.

Did they happen to show the one in which George "Goober" Lindsey appeared?
It was titled "I am the Night/Color Me Black."

After she joined the cast of "The Andy Griffith Show," Frances only made one
guest appearance: as Aunt Bee on an episode of "Gomer Pyle, USMC." (She's
really upset that Sergeant Carter keeps yelling at Gomer, a very funny
appearance.) This does *not* count her one other non-speaking cameo at the end
of the
"Gomer" ep where Gomer comes back to Mayberry.

Before TAGS is a much different story. She had a resume that included such
classics as "The Lone Ranger," "Perry Mason," "The Jack Benny Show,"
"Sugarfoot," "Rawhide," "Wagon Train," three different episodes of the 1950s
version of
"Dragnet," and of course, the role of Henrietta on the TAGS pilot that
appeared on "The Danny Thomas Show."

I, too, would like to know where to find these pieces. I have all of them

nothing on E-bay. Surely someone has some info.

If I'm remembering correctly, Aunt Bee said something like, "Mum's my name,
silence is my game. Tick a lock." and did a gesture of locking her mouth shut
with a key. So I think it must be a cute way of saying you won't blab the
information around town, not even to Laura Lee Hobbs.

I was thinking about the episode where Peggy's male friend comes to town and
Andy gets jealous. I like it when he says, to Barney, something sarcastic
about the guy's name being Don. Was this the last episode with Peggy in it?
Do you think she ran away with Don?

I've seen a couple of episodes of "It's a great life" and thought the character
of Amy Morgan was like Aunt Bee. She cleaned and cooked for the men while they
got themselves into trouble.

Just to let everyone know that the master list of what appearances are made
by African-Americans in Mayberry can be found at my site showing images from
the various shows. I haven't completed it yet, but there are enough images
to let everyone know that it exists.

I was listening to Eagle 106.7 radio in Atlanta when a DJ (and avowed
TAGS fan) was doing a remote broadcast from a July 4th celebration. He
had his little girl with him and was talking about how she was drinking
up all the Coke. He said, "She's being a little Hoggette Winslow out here."
I think we can all agree - it's a pretty name.

Folks, my bucket isn't working and I hope you'll put on yours to help. I
once heard a cassette tape of the Dillards that included various humorous
monologs between songs. Hoping to find this on CD, I bought a CD of the
Dillards ("There is a Time: 1963-1970") after hearing a sampling of the
first couple of tracks. As it turns out, the CD I bought only included the
first monolog. I was disappointed. If ya'll know where I can get a CD of
the "uncut" version, I would greatly appreciate it. Unfortunately, I don't
know the origin of the cassette tape I heard. You can email me directly, if
you would like.

Yes, there is a Macon, NC. It's a small community located in Warren County
up near the Virginia line about halfway between I-85 and I-95 on US 158.
Can't imagine the bus coming from Macon, NC though. If you blink when
you're driving through, you'll miss it. Makes Mayberry look like Raleigh.

>>>Just what does tick a lock mean? Where did that expression come from?
Barney says it, Aunt Bee says it. Anyone else on TAGS say it?

Otis says it too, when Andy and Barney are trying to guess what he'd just
bought (a used car).

I don't know the origin of the phrase, but a story entitled "Tick a Lock:
Iron Bars" by an author named Richard Matthew Hallet appeared in the
Saturday Evening Post on October 9, 1926, so it goes back at least that far.

Hi all,

Speaking of Mayberry moments, here is a line I use on a very regular basis. As
a Sergeant with a sheriff's department in Michigan, I often get teased about
eating doughnuts (you know, the old cop-doughnut connection). My response is
always, "A slim, high spirited person such as myself needs my afternoon sugar
pick-me-up or I'm just no good to anybody."

Hope everyone had a great 4th and I'm looking forward to seeing as many of you
as possible this weekend at Mayberry in the Midwest.
