Ken described Rutherfordton, NC, my Mayberry. This small town is where my
father's family is from and they have been there in since the late 1700's.
They were a well respected family as I learned when I was a child. I was
expected to act like somebody while visiting. Main Street downtown has 5
business blocks, 2 on one side and 3 on the other. There is a hardware
store that has been there at least 100 years, city hall is in the next
block, the jail was right behind city hall and the police station was in
city hall. One story my father told was when he was a boy, he and some
friends got on the roof and threw poppers down at the police as they came
and went. I'm sure that didn't go over very well with his father - who was
the Mayor! He took my mother on their first date to the soda fountain at
the drug store on Main Street for ice cream. There were houses built by
family members in the next block from city hall and are still there as
B&B's.
The best place to relive Mayberry is Mt. Airy. It may not be exactly like
the show but the people there help give it that feel.
