Here it is as I understand it:

When you rasterize something like type, you're making it "flat", where 
you can't change it with the type tools any more.

Rendering is when you're producing something like the skin over a 3D 
model, and it's changeable. Rendering is the act of making your choices 
of color, texture, etc appear as it would in a finished state, but it's 
not a fixed state.
