Many computers have a digital tape drive for backup purposes. I can store
4GB on a small DDS-2 cartridge on my Seagate Scorpion, or up to 24GB on a
DDS-3. If you have more data than you can burn onto a CD then a backup tape
becomes a good way to carry it about.

However, whether you can read a tape depends if you have the same hardware
and backup software that was used to write it.. there are several
"standards" for backup files, and many different sizes and shapes of tape
cartridge like DLT or QIC or even systems that record onto VHS
videocassettes. So if he just copied some data onto his particular tape
drive using his particular software and just assumed anyone else would be
able to read it, he may be sadly disappointed :-)
