Dear Michael, Hi there! Nice to be back. I've missed everyone, but not the tearing-out-of-hair part of the whole experience.
I believe CSS and tables are not compatible, right? I'd rather use tables in order to be readable in Netscape 4.X and I believe CSS won't accomplish that. I think SSI are allowable in the Netscape 4.X realm, though. I trust you'll correct me if I've got that wrong. I've uploaded my New, Somewhat Improved page. I've managed to solve some of my problems but still can't get the text on Heather's pic to sit nicely to the right of her picture. Grrrr. I'll go back and look and see if I've gummed something up by using a valign when I shouldn't have. <goes off, fiddles a bit> Yes, I did. But if I just use align="top" the image stays in the middle. I have to confess that it's going to be pretty hard for me to give up something that seems to work. Except, of course, the text stubbornly remains *under* her pic, despite being in a separate cell altogether. And the text at the bottom of the page which describes me and my job is tall and quite a lot skinnier on the uploaded page than it appears on the DW page. It's supposed to stretch across the page but it's behaving as if it's in the first column of a two-cell neighbourhood. My other problem is the entire page seems to be quiet a bit wider than it was when I started putting these pictures on it. I can't figure out why that would be. I just sent my sweetie out for popcorn, bless him. Peter, you inspired me to hunt high and low through my DW. I found a number of options I'd never noticed, including one that purported to clear out redundant code. That made me very happy. I finally stumbled across the numbering of code lines by clicking on to a wee box on the HTML source code page. That's very, very nice! Thank you so much. I met my sweetie in German class, by the way, in 1967 at Univ. of New Hampshire, here in the chilly Northeast of the US. I'm thinking I'm going to tell my boss on Monday that I'd like to take whatever monies have been set aside for me for training to hire the young woman who came to my house and tutored me when I first did this site. In two hours she untangled my miserable mess and taught me the basics of setting up tables. Between her and this list, the site got going. But now I need to get more training. I find the hunt-and-peck system so favoured by people I consider "natural" computer geeks an extremely frustrating learning method. I'm not a very good fixer upper, really. I also find the thought of languishing in a classroom for months in hopes of answering my very specific questions not appealing either. I'd rather cut to the chase. Thank you for helping at least make this page look not like the aftermath of an explosion at a spaghetti factory. I've been working on this all afternoon and it's still not ready for prime time, alas. Even if I knock it all together (maybe especially if) by Monday, I doubt anyone's going to understand how much time it took. At this point I think it'll be cheaper for the District to pay for some training than pee away all this money on hourly wages whilst I make messes in search of solutions. I continue to appreciate any advice anyone has on this page <http://www.merrimackccd.org/test/boardstafftest.html> Thanks.
