Real is your first choice in this case only because you have the video encoded in Real already. You only need to install the player on all of your machines. windows Media should always be the first thought because of the install base, every Windows machine.
Whether you use Real, WM, or QuickTime, it is true that there is no great need to install a streaming server. All three formats will do a faststart progressive download through your intranet using metafiles. SMIL is a little extreme though. You can use a .ram file as a link, it's no more than a URL in a text file with a .ram extension.
