I think it really depends on the type of sites being
developed. I've got no particular artistic talent, but if I
have a "specialty" it is designing content-rich sites with
an emphasis on accessibility. Nothing fancy like Flash or
awesome graphics - but many of the most successful sites are
the also very simple in terms of design.  If your focus is
on the content, you tend to think more in terms of where
things will go, and you design your site around the content
- thinking of pages or page sections as containers for
various sorts of content.
