Hi Jac, As far as I know, you need to get you Distiller working, because Illustrator's PDF files are always huge (I think Illustrator treats it all like a giant graphic). I convert a lot of meeting minutes into PDFs at work, and usually the size is the same (if not smaller) than the Word documents. You will need to play with settings for a bit (set it to Screen, lower the resolution, and see what gives you the smallest file size of the quality you want). I think there is also a setting somewhere to make the pfs readable using older versions of Acrobat Reader.
