I need the ability to display a slideshow on an HTML page (without refreshing the page) for a client.

The only way I know how to do that and support all of the browsers is to use some form of Java. If you know some secret way in HTML, please let me know, but my wife tells me that it can't be done in HTML (and since she wrote a good portion of the HTML 4.0 and XHTML specs, I tend to take her word on anything to do with X/HTML). Hence the "java" requirement.

I realize that some people don't allow java to run in their browsers, but that is a minority. And, as I said, my client has "required" that his web site support a slideshow on a certain page.
