What you saw wasn't www.root it was wwwroot which is the default directory
for IIS to serve web pages from. If you had installed IIS instead of Apache
on your local computer what you would have seen is c:/inetpub/wwwroot,
c:/inetpub/mailroot, c:/inetpub/scripts, c:/inetpub/AdminScripts and
c:/inetpub/iissamples which are all the default folders for the IIS
webserver.

The names of the subfolders are pretty much self explanatory i.e. www, mail,
scripts, Admin, samples. I never install the FTP portion so I'm not sure if
you get a ftproot when you install that component as well.

With your apache install if you had another computer networked at home you
would reach it by using http://machinename just like on IIS. I have Apache
running on the Mac OS X 10.3 computer on my network. If I'm testing
something on Apache and want to access it from my laptop I type in
http://mac/ to reach it. All of my computers are behind firewalls so they
are not accessible from the net. Otherwise I'd have to use a fully qualified
domain name such as http://mac.wiserways.com assuming I also configured my
DNS server to resolve that name properly. ;-)

I don't remember what the original question was re command prompt so I can't
answer that. We were at a friend's house by the sea this weekend and I
forgot to take the power supply for my tablet with me so I only had the 3.5
hours before my battery rand down for net access and some billable work I
took with me. Didn't even get to the class work I needed to get done (both
for the class I teach and the one I'm taking on ASP.NET 2.0). So I should be
working on homework and billables right now.

On the other hand it was nice kayaking though the tidal flats and canals.

Thanks Cheryl, I see the logic of that. But it still leaves the question:
what is the browser equivalent of the command prompt command which
succeeded.

I had been a bit surprised to see 'www.root' halfway through a url (I won't
be again) and had just wondered if there was something simpler which was
being overlooked. Oh! Such as a missing stop in www.root?
