I too do offer discounts but based on specific criteria. I have one discount
that I give to "qualified" non-profits (I decide who qualifies) which so far
have included churches (not mine), school/neighborhood organizations, etc.
and cub scouts (my husband volunteered that one as a freebie).

I also give a discount to other members of the Chamber of Commerce. All of
the discounts a percentage of full price. With the non-profits there is
another contingency, they must provide me with all of the content in a
timely manner and pretty much web ready. It can be a Word document but not a
Word save as HTML document.

I give notice to an entity when I accept them as a non-profit entitled to a
discount that if I do not receive the material in a timely manner or they
provide material that requires a lot of work to be done to make it web ready
they will lose the discount. I will give them notice before removing the
discount and a chance to remedy the problem. I have in fact fired one of the
non-profits I used to do work for because their PIA factor became so high I
wasn't even willing to work with them at full freight, much less at a
discounted rate.

They had the distinction of being the first client I fired for that reason
but they were not the last. They are the only non-profit however. The
majority of my discounted clients are very nice people who are easy to work
with (and pay their bills promptly.)

Just to poke my fat opinion in...

I give discounts. But I make the client aware that they are receiving one.
