Although I think it does work, it's depecrated PHP syntax. You should include quotes around the key name ($_POST['poemtype']).
But now you're probably thinking, "Won't this terminate my string?" Yes, it will, so in addition, you need to add braces around the array accessor so that PHP knows exactly what needs to be interepreted.
$sql = @mysql_query("INSERT INTO spw_type (spw_type_id ,
spw_type_description) VALUES ('', '{$_POST['poemtype']}')")
or die ("Query failed");
