Thank you for this; at the moment this one is working. It was trying to
adapt it to a 17-field table that gives difficulties. The same format for
smaller tables (I've now got two working successfully) seems OK. This
suggest some cut-off size for phpmyadmin - at least the version I have.
I'll work back to that; if it is the problem I'll reduce the fields in that
table.
I did spend hours and hours on all sorts of variations; I know the db is
opened and that the query itself works. The problem must be either size or
php content, as you suggest. Is there normally a limit to table size?

PS - I can't get errors printed out; I'm not going to worry at the moment.
