Ah, yes. Well, that is strictly a temporary device so I couldn't miss it if the styling suddenly began to work, and to determine where the edges of the span were. In the final, the background will be identical to the midBody div, so that the text appears to simply replace the previous.

reason I say sort of is because on my tablet some of the default text

That is definitely something to consider. I use small fonts both on my 1280 x 960 19" and my 1600 x 1200 15" LCD, so I hadn't noticed it.

FWIW, that css-d list - its owner is Eric Meyer. I began a class with

Oh, BTW, Drew came through for me and found the point at issue (see earlier in thread). Turns out that before declaring a rule for the complex span selector it was necessary to have a rule for the affected complex a:hover selector. Creating a display:inline rule for that selector got the job done. I haven't changed the online version of the pages yet, because I want to submit a question to CSS-D about whether it is Firefox or IE, or both, which is incorrectly parsing the CSS and causing the problem, and I need to be able to refer to the example pages to illustrate the issue.

Sincere thanks to everyone who offered help and took the time to look over the pages. Your time and your input is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Scott
